Mount Pilatus
Thrilling Cable Car Experience
This is an experience on my bucket list. Pilatus-Bahnen offers an incredible experience, combining breathtaking views with thrilling rides. The journey up Mount Pilatus is spectacular, with the world's steepest cogwheel railway providing an exhilarating climb.
The train is built at an incline to climb the mountain, taking about 30 minutes. It's best to sit in the first or last car—depending on whether you like to look forward and watch the driver operate the train, or if you prefer to look back down the train. Of course, if you're descending back to Alpnachstad, it's the opposite! Once at the top, the panoramic views of the Swiss Alps and Lake Lucerne are stunning, so magnificent and unparalleled. The best part is taking the cable car down, with picturesque scenery all around. You can also see brave and weary hikers going up or down the mountain.
Whether you're hiking, enjoying a meal at the summit, or just soaking in the scenery, Pilatus-Bahnen ensures you have an amazing and peaceful unforgettable adventure! Highly recommended!
We bought our tickets online. This way, you can save time queuing for tickets. You can also depart at any time on the day of your ticket, or even earlier (those departing at their exact booked time have priority). Make sure to check the weather and clear skies for the best experience!

Mount Pilatus🇨🇭🏔️
Mount Pilatus with a height of 2128m offers spectacular 360 views over Central Switzerland.Whether it’s your first time or your hundredth, the breathtaking views up there never disappoint.
Take a ride on the world’s steepest cogwheel train from Alpnachstad or enjoy the stunning cable car views on your ascent from Kriens.
The trip from Lucerne to Mount Pilatus is referred as Golden Round Trip. Here’s an overview of this trip:
Boat (To Alpnachstad) → Cogwheel (From Alpnachstad to Pilatus Kulm Up the Mountain) → Aerial Cableway (From Pilatus Kulm to Fräkmüntegg Down the Mountain) → Panorama Gondola (From Fräkmüntegg to Kriens Down the Mountain) → Bus (Back to Lucerne).
However, keep in mind that these trips are only possible from around mid/late May to mid October, as this is when the cogwheel and boat (more on that below) are operating.
If you have Swiss travel pass , tickets are included in that.
Once you get off the cogwheel or aerial cableway, you’ll immediately get incredible views of the area. These views alone are breathtaking. However, if you’d like to get to a slightly higher viewpoint, do a climb up a few flights of stairs to one of the observation decks.
There are two observation decks at Mount Pilatus. The one we climbed up is on the Oberhaupt peak. From this lookout, you can see Lucerne and the surrounding lakes and mountains, as well as Klimsenkapelle – a tiny chapel set on what is probably the most scenic plot of land ever. The other lookout spot is on the Esel peak, which also offers views of Lucerne and the gorgeous surrounding landscape.
Mt Pilatus is just breathtakingly beautiful!🙌Words can’t describe how amazing this place is we don’t ever want to leave!

Located in the central region of the country, the lake is surrounded by the stunning Alps and encompasses several historic cities, including Lucerne. The lake has an unusual shape, with many bays and arms that make it look like a maze from the air. The lake is surrounded by famous mountains such as Pilatus, Rigi, and Stanserhorn, which are popular destinations for hiking, biking, or taking a cable car. The lake is popular for cruises, both on historic steamboats and modern vessels. Cruises on Lake Lucerne provide stunning views of the mountains and villages that line the lakeshore. In addition to cruises, tourists can also enjoy other activities such as swimming, sailing, or visiting Mount Rigi and Mount Pilatus by cable car for spectacular views from above. Switzerland, Lucerne, Mount Pilatus
Mount Pilatus (Pilatus) is a mountain peak near Lucerne, Switzerland, spanning the cantons of Obwalden, Nidwalden, and Lucerne, with its highest peak (elevation 2128 meters) located on the border between Obwalden and Nidwalden.
Access to the summit is possible via the Pilatus Railway, the world's steepest cogwheel railway, from Alpnachstad, operating from May to November (depending on the snowfall date). There are year-round aerial panorama gondolas and cableways from Kriens. Mount Pilatus features Switzerland's longest summer toboggan track (1,350 meters) and the largest rope park in Central Switzerland.
During the summer, the popular 'Golden Round Trip' route for tourists includes taking a boat across Lake Lucerne to Alpnachstad, ascending the mountain by cogwheel railway, descending by aerial cableway and panorama gondolas, and then taking a bus back to Lucerne.
The name of Mount Pilatus is derived from a local legend that Pontius Pilate was buried here.
There are also legends of dragons roaming the mountain, with clouds and mist shrouding it all year round. When taking the cable car up the mountain, the first half of the journey is shrouded in fog. As soon as you break through the thick clouds, a scene of the sun shining on the golden mountain appears, with radiant light and a vast sea of clouds surrounding you. Everyone around, regardless of age, gender, or origin, exclaims in amazement, utterly captivated by the breathtaking view!
Cozy And Warm Restaurant, Pilatus Kulm🇨🇭

📍Restaurant Frakmuntegg
Schlossweg 1, 6010 Kriens, Switzerland
Stopped by at Frakmuntegg while taking the cable car ride from Kriens to Frakmuntegg, and from Frakmuntegg to Pilatus Kulm! Great stop for a quick meal and a quick rest before we move on to the Pilatus Kulm! Love the restaurant, love the ambiance and the cozy warm vibe! It was indeed warm and comfortable staying in the restaurant before we braved ourselves into the cold again! The restaurant offered a stunning mountain view as well from their transparent window, how lovely it was! We ordered some beers and it was decent! Having some meals with this view was 10/10! We love it!
In 2024, I wish to travel to Seoul, Korea!
Stunning Views at Mount Pilatus, Lucerne 🇨🇭

📍Mount Pilatus, Lucerne
Absolutely stunning panoramic views we got from the peak of Mount Pilatus, 2131m altitude! We could never get enough of the views, breathtakingly amazing! It was winter when we visited, felt like a winter wonderland but sun was out and it felt really nice! We took the small gondola ride from Kriens to Frakmuntegg, followed by the Dragon Ride to Pilatus Kulm! Gondola ride was fun and we took a lot of pictures! The ride was enjoyable and the views were spectacular! There are a few cafes and restaurants at both stations, which offer instant warmth from the cold outdoor! Food served were pretty decent! We spent around 4 hours at Mount Pilatus, mainly strolling around and taking lots of photos! Such an amazing and wonderful trip here that you wouldn’t want to miss on your trip to Lucerne! 10/10 would recommend ✨

Mount Pilatus
Mountain Pilatus is one of the famous Swiss alps. It’s well known for its cogwheel railway, the slope is 48%. It was so much fun to go to the top with this kinda transportation. If you have Swiss travel card, you can hop on & off this railway for free as well. At the top of the mountain. you can see the most famous and highest three alps of Switzerland! It’s suitable for family and elderly to go there as it doesn’t need lots of walk.
Explore the most beautiful peaks of the Swiss Alps 🇨🇭.
Alps' most beautiful peak ⛰️ Pilatus Mountain, is a peak where you can overlook the panoramic view of Luxembourg. It has the steepest cogwheel railway in the world, built in 1889, with a maximum inclination of 48 degrees, still holding the title of the steepest cogwheel railway in the world. In 1937, it was electrified and converted from steam-powered to electric-powered trains.
To climb the mountain early the next morning 🧗♀️, the hotel 🏨 was deliberately booked halfway up the mountain, with mountain ridges, lakes, and wooden houses 🏡, just like a world in a fairy tale. At night: looking at the stars outside the window and falling asleep; in the morning: with the dawn breaking, pushing open the window, the eyes are greeted with the scenery of endless green grass and refreshing air.
Upwards, we choose to take the cable car 🚠 for a tour, along the way, we can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Pilatus Mountain and the lake area below the mountain. The peak of Pilatus Mountain is 2132 meters above sea level, with no obstructions around it. Below the mountain is Lake Lucerne, and in the distance is the Black Forest of Germany. It is indeed cold at high altitude, but the scenery at the top of the mountain is very spectacular, which makes people excited. As a cloud of mist passes by, we find ourselves in the midst of the clouds. Although we cannot see the snowy peaks, we can see the beautiful Lucerne and the four forest lakes. On the way down, we take the red train 🚄 and experience the charm of the steepest cogwheel train. As we descend, the ancient city of Lucerne becomes closer and closer, and we can even see the water tower on the covered bridge. This is the most romantic place in Switzerland, as Hugo said.
Change to the train and continue to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Switzerland. This is one of the railways where you can see the most beautiful scenery in Switzerland. Sitting by the window, feeling the wind, listening to the sound of the rails, and enjoying the picturesque towns, time always slips away inadvertently, but the scenery is deeply imprinted in the heart, unforgettable for a lifetime.
