Colmar – A Living Christmas Card Just under an hour from Strasbourg, Colmar is smaller and even more “fairy-tale”: pastel houses, flower-decked (in winter: light-decked) balconies and little canals in the area known as Petite Venise.  In Advent, the old town hosts six different Christmas markets, each with its own mood, plus illuminated canals and medieval buildings that many say inspired Beauty and the Beast. Strasbourg during the Christmas season truly feels like it's been enchanted. As the "Capital of Christmas," the entire city is illuminated with lights, wreaths, and festive decorations starting from November. Walking through the streets, even the air is filled with the scent of the holidays. While strolling through the markets, my favorite spot is Strasbourg's Little Venice — La Petite France. During Christmas, it becomes even more romantic than usual. Half-timbered houses are adorned with string lights, windows are decorated with Christmas ornaments, and walking along the small bridges and canals truly makes you lose track of time. The Christmas market near the cathedral remains lively, with wooden stalls selling mulled wine, gingerbread, handmade crafts, and festive trinkets. Sipping on spiced wine as you browse warms both your hands and your heart. What makes Strasbourg most enchanting is the atmosphere of the entire city — it's not just a market, but the whole city celebrating Christmas. If you want to experience the most classic and romantic European Christmas, Strasbourg will surely amaze you.

A trip to Strasbourg isn't complete without climbing to the top of Strasbourg Cathedral! This Gothic cathedral is renowned for its rose windows, spires, and intricate carvings, making it breathtaking from the outside. However, the real highlight is the view from the top. The entrance is located outside the cathedral. You need to buy a ticket and climb the 330-plus spiral staircase. While the staircase is a bit narrow, the view from the top is absolutely worthwhile—a panoramic view of Strasbourg's Old Town and the Ill River, with the cascading rooftops and red-tiled buildings creating a spectacular vista. Because it can be quite windy, I recommend wearing a jacket 🧥. I personally think it's best to go around sunset; it's truly beautiful 🤩. Overall, climbing to the top is my most recommended Strasbourg experience! If you enjoy city views, definitely include this in your itinerary. The interior of the cathedral isn't particularly remarkable (last two pictures), but admission is free. This 10-day Europe journey started in Bangkok, with an early arrival in Paris, where we spent three days soaking in the charm of the French capital. After Paris, we traveled to Luxembourg and spent time exploring the city before heading into Germany. We continued to Strasbourg, with a day trip to nearby Alsatian gems like Colmar, Eguisheim, Riquewihr, Ribeauvillé, and Kaysersberg. Then, we took the train to Heidelberg for its old town charm, before heading south to Munich. From there, we made a day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle, enjoying the scenic drive through Bavaria. The trip wrapped up with a relaxed final day in Munich before flying back to Bangkok.

The square's ancient cobblestone pavement bears traces of history, and every step conveys the aura and cultural heritage of past dynasties. Here, I was particularly captivated by the grandeur and intricate carvings of the castle. The towering walls, classical arches, and meticulously carved ornaments not only demonstrate the architect's ingenuity but also evoke a sense of medieval architectural aesthetics. The fountains and statues in the square add a vibrant atmosphere, inviting one to stop and admire. Wandering through the square, I also noticed the interaction between tourists and locals, children playing in the square, and artists performing in the corners.
