#easytravelpost Hogsback (1,200 m, Amathole Mountains, Eastern Cape) is the village Tolkien reportedly modeled the Shire on — I drove East London → King William's Town → Hogsback (2.5 hrs, R63 tar then 12 km of good gravel, 2×4 fine). No entrance fee for the village forest lanes; the Hobbiton Forest Lane is the 1.2 km path from the Hogsback Inn past the "Hobbit Hole" to the Madonna-and-Child waterfall, where Sphagnum grows on the lane edges, Polytrichum on the fallen yellowwood logs, and Adiantum ferns arch over the track. I slept at a village B&B (650 ZAR/night, cash preferred, card at the inn). I went in April (autumn) — lane 15°C, waterfall shade 11°C, moss wet from the 5 a.m. fog. Wore trail-runners; the lane is firm red loam, the waterfall base is squelch. Mistake: I arrived on a school-holiday Friday — the lane was a pony-ride queue. Go a Tuesday in term-time. Second mistake: I didn't bring 50 ZAR cash for the "Hobbit Hole" donation box (card zero, it's a private garden with an honor jar). Third: I called it "Tolkien's Shire" to a local artist — she corrected: "Hogsback is Hogsback, JRR visited the Cape, not here — the link is fan lore". Respect the village's own story. Buy in Hogsback: a 40 ZAR apple crumble at the Chocolate Shop, not the 220 ZAR inn dinner. Gear: a 150 ZAR wool hat from the village stall — Hogsback nights hit 3°C in June. Local rule: no drones (village consensus, the SAPS office in Alice enforces loosely but ask first), no picking the protea on the lane, no swimming in the Madonna pool (it's a catchment). The moss on the lane edge is "the Shire's lawn" — step on the cut track, not the green. Opinion: Hogsback is South Africa's cheapest "enchanted forest" (650 ZAR B&B, free lanes) and gets dismissed as a day-trip. Should the village charge a 20 ZAR honor box at the Hobbit Hole and use it to plank the wettest 100 m, or keep it donation-only? I'd plank it. Would you drive 2.5 hrs for a mossy lane where the fog feels like Middle-earth?

#easytravelpost Hogsback is 1,400 m in the Amathole Mountains, Eastern Cape, 2.5 hrs from East London via the R63→R345. No park entry fee (the forest trails are on village/commonage land and the adjacent Amathole Forest reserve is free), I slept at a thatched cottage (R900/night, "Away with the Fairies"), and walked Hobbiton-on-Hogsback Road at 07:50 — yellowwood and tree-fern, moss on the stone walls 3 cm thick, 8°C, a Knysna turaco calling, the lane's name borrowed from the 《Tolkien》 rumour (he taught at Oxford, never came, but the resemblance is uncanny). Loop: Hobbiton Rd → Big Tree (1,000-yr Podocarpus, 30 min) → Madonna and Child waterfall → 39 Steps → back via Arboretum. The moss on the 39 Steps handrail is the photo; I sat on a moss boulder at 09:00, ate a 45 ZAR scone from the fairy café in the village, and watched cloud pour off the ridge. No card at the small cafés — carry 200 ZAR cash. Mistake: I drove in on a Friday in July — black ice on the R345 bends at 06:00; day-drive, not pre-dawn. Another: the "Hobbiton" lane is a real residential road, not a theme park — respect the cottages. Would you base in Hogsback for the free mossy Hobbiton-lane + Big Tree walk with a 45 ZAR scone, or pay to enter the nearby Fort Fordyce reserve instead?
