During my three-day stay, there were almost no days when the trains were running perfectly on schedule. When I traveled from Brussels to Amsterdam, my reserved Eurostar train was suddenly cancelled. Even when I asked a station attendant, they only told me to take another train without providing any detailed instructions. In the end, I figured out the route myself and managed to arrive by connecting to another train. Therefore, it's really important to allow plenty of flexibility in your schedule when traveling to the Netherlands! And I highly recommend the Citymapper app 📱 It accurately reflects delay and cancellation information that isn't available on Google Maps, making it incredibly useful. If you're traveling by train in the Netherlands, I definitely recommend installing it! ⸻ 2. Getting to Kinderdijk is a bit tricky 🌬️ Many people plan to go to Kinderdijk to see the windmills, but getting there involves a combination of train and boat, making it a bit complicated. The actual route is: Amsterdam South Station → Train to Amsterdam Central Station → Walk to the boat pier → Board the boat → Change boats along the way → Arrive at Kinderdijk I managed to get there by checking with the boat crew. Boat schedules are also fixed, so it's recommended to carefully check the route and times in advance! ⸻ 3. Utrecht, the city of Miffy, is surprisingly close! 🐰 Utrecht, Miffy's hometown, is about 30 minutes by train from Amsterdam. The city is filled with Miffy-themed things, from Miffy statues and traffic lights to cute shops, making it a very relaxing place to visit. While you should be careful about train troubles, it's a city I highly recommend visiting if you have the time! ✨ ⸻ 4. Reservations are essential for popular spots! 🎟️ These two places are especially noteworthy: * Anne Frank House * Van Gogh Museum Anne Frank House is particularly popular, and you need to book very early to get tickets. I booked too late and couldn't get in. Even with a reservation, you might have to queue to get into the Van Gogh Museum, so it's best to plan your visit with plenty of time to spare. ⸻ 5. Stroopwafels are incredibly delicious! 🧇 Different from Belgian waffles, stroopwafels are a Dutch specialty. Thin waffles with a gooey caramel sauce filling are sweet and truly delicious. This is St. Nicholas Church (Basiliek van de Heilige Nicolaas). Its exterior features red brick, a dome, and twin towers, blending Neo-Renaissance and Baroque styles. Located in the city center, bustling with canals and trams, it exudes a distinctly European old-town feel. Stepping inside is a completely different world. The light streaming through the stained-glass windows is dreamlike. The ceiling, murals, and altar are exquisitely detailed, possessing a subtle yet solemn beauty. Interestingly, the church faces the bustling Central Station. Outside, tourists, trams, and cafes abound, but inside, it's a remarkably quiet religious space. Amsterdam is a place for foodie indeed. Mostly went to viral food spots. As I know most of these places are considered overpriced, I'm more likely to pay for a one time expensive food considering I'm there as a tourist. I went there with my sister so we always bought one portion of the things we wanted to try and shared that among each other. This way the price was shared equally and wasn't a big concern for us. 🫐 Het koekemannetje 8/10 The cookie had the perfect balance of sweetness. When we bought the cookie, it was still warm and fresh. I expected it to be overwhelmingly sweet but that wasn't the case. 🫐 Chun Cafe - 6/10 Overpriced. It was good but even as a tourist I thought it was ridiculously overpriced. I have satisfied my hunger and curiosity but probably can find another store with affordable options. However, with that said, the sandwich were very delicious. I had high expectations and they didn't fail. If only the prices were not astrocious 🥲 🫐 Saint Jean bakery -5/10 Frankly Like any other bakery. Maybe its the londoner in me but it really was like any other bakery in central London. 🫐 Cafe sonnevald - 3/10 Small and cozy but we had flies. No more comment. Ruined the experience for us. 🫐 China Sichuan Restaurant -5/10 The restaurant in itself is good BUT poor choice of food from us. Went with xiahungshu recommendation and utterly disappointed. Maybe it's the lack of our knowledge in Sichuan food but it was pretty much oil and veggies. Maybe should have done more research. 🫐 Herring -10/10 Tried it in one of the markets and went twice! LOVED IT.

I've put together a family travel guide and a pitfall avoidance guide, so make sure to save it now～ 🚋Transportation (Important for traveling with kids!) Starting from Amsterdam Central Station, you need to transfer multiple times between trains and buses. Also, the travel pass you buy can’t be used; you have to buy tickets on the NS app for 25 euros. Then transfer to bus number 70 for 5.2 euros, which takes about half an hour to reach Giethoorn. The whole trip takes about two hours. If you want to save some money, take the pass to Lelystad Centrum, then buy a ticket from Lelystad Centrum to Giethoorn on the NS app for only 19.5 euros. When traveling with kids, you can choose this money-saving option and use the extra cash to buy snacks for the kids～ Next to bus stop 70, there’s a PLUS supermarket, and right across the main entrance, there’s a free restroom—super convenient for washing up with kids.
