Other Gheralta churches (Debre Maryam, Mikael Imreha) are easier walks; all ask 200–500 ETB donation, women cover hair, shoes off inside. Mekele ATMs work; Hawzen is cash only. Best light is 7–9 a.m. on the west-face paintings. Mistake: I wore trail runners and the sandstone was polished—barefoot or grippy flats at the top, but approach shoes for the ladder. Another: I skipped the guide to “save money” and the priest at the base turned me back; Gheralta requires a licensed guide for Yemata, no negotiation.
