They are a nationally protected cultural heritage site and represent the largest and most numerous grotto group in Anyue County from the Tang to Ming dynasties. There are a total of 770 cliff carvings at Muyu Mountain, mainly carved during the mid to late Tang period. The themes include "Shakyamuni Preaching," "Contemplation of the Infinite Life Sutra," "Welcoming Buddha," "Three Buddhas," and "Combined Buddha and Daoist Niches." The tallest carving reaches 4.5 meters, while the smaller seated Buddhas are only about 30 centimeters high. The grottoes also preserve many exquisite stone carvings and Buddhist scripture inscriptions, holding significant historical, cultural, and artistic value. The entire Muyu Mountain cliff carving area stretches about 8.4 kilometers, with the best-preserved sections mainly concentrated at Longyin Rock, Lion Rock, and Sleeping Buddha Rock. The accessible viewing areas are focused on these three cliff sections, totaling about 2 kilometers. Along the way, visitors can see several Ming dynasty inscriptions, such as the Liu Yuliang Restoration Stele. Partial Site Introductions: 1. Lion Rock: Lion Rock is the most magnificent and grand site among the Anyue Grottoes. The cliff carvings at Lion Rock are distributed between two peaks. Below the peaks is a narrow deep ravine with steep cliffs on both sides. In the middle is a protruding rock about 40 meters long and 20 meters wide. The peaks themselves have three-sided cliffs. Over a hundred niches of various sizes are carved into the cliffs, with the largest niche reaching 3.5 meters in height. 2. Longyin Rock: Longyin Rock is located about one kilometer northwest of Guanyin Well, stretching about 200 meters long and 35 meters high. Viewed from right to left, the rock face looks like a barrier spanning before the eyes. The cliff is adorned with numerous carvings, some seated, some reclining, some standing, and some walking, dazzling in variety. Despite their age, the colors remain vivid and striking. 3. Sleeping Buddha Rock: Sleeping Buddha Rock is on the cliff south of Longyin Rock. Above it on the cliff is a Tang dynasty carving of the Thousand-Armed Guanyin, while below are the Nirvana Sleeping Buddha and a large monastic assembly from the Tang and Song periods. The reclining Buddha is 31 meters long, 6.2 meters high at the head, 11 meters wide at the shoulders, and 3.2 meters wide at the body. On both sides of the Buddha, arranged from east (head) to west (feet), are thousands of Buddhist monks in formation surrounding the Buddha. 4. Song Dynasty Large Stone Buddha: In the southwest section of Muyu Mountain, there is a large grotto containing a giant Shakyamuni Buddha statue. The cliff carvings are right by a picturesque small river. 🌟Admission: Free 🌟The carvings are divided into two areas; be very careful when the paths are slippery on rainy days. ✅Main Highlights: 1️⃣ Arhat Cave, a central pillar cave 👉The central pillar features a Bodhisattva seated in the lotus position on a waist-bound lotus throne, with a head added in modern times, including a halo and backlight. The left hand holds a bowl in front of the abdomen, and the right hand forms a mudra. Below the lotus throne is a fierce dragon holding a pearl in its mouth. 👉The left and right walls of the central pillar have many inscriptions, including a clear one stating "18th year of Shaoxing, mid-winter" (1148), which is direct evidence for dating the Arhat Cave and surrounding niches carved at the same time. Another inscription lightly carved reads "7th year of Zhengde" (1512), likely added during the mid-Ming period by local worshippers for blessings. 👉The most spectacular are the Arhat statues carved on the back, left, and right walls of the central pillar. 👉There are seven rows of Arhat statues, neatly arranged. Except for the first row on the back wall which stands, the others are seated. Despite damage over time, the Arhat statues display varied postures and vivid expressions, showcasing the delicate charm of Song Dynasty sculpture. Some hold sutras or fans, some have hands joined in mudra, others rest hands on knees or tilt their heads to listen—dynamic and lively. 2️⃣ Flying Deities 👉On the left and right walls of the Arhat Cave, you can see remnants of a pair of exquisitely carved flying deities! Their bodies are gracefully stretched, ribbons flowing smoothly, with light and agile postures, still radiating a lively spirit. 3️⃣ Peacock King Niche 👉The Peacock King sits cross-legged on a flower throne borne by a peacock; the peacock stands firmly on both feet, strong and vigorous, head raised as if about to call. The niche walls have many reliefs of celestial attendants, protectors, and donors, some damaged. 👉Although less impressive compared to the Peacock King caves at Shimen Mountain, Beishan, and Baodingshan, this statue is simple and steady, with the peacock standing robustly and a calm expression, embodying the genuine and vivid folk cave art. 4️⃣ Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva Niche 👉The main figure is a seated Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva wearing a cloak-style crown, with a square-round face and calm expression, thick and flowing drapery, holding a staff in both hands. 👉On both sides are carvings of Arhats, protectors, and donors. 📍For more notes on the stone carvings of Anyue, Sichuan and Dazu, Chongqing, please check my homepage or collections.
