2026 Arugam Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in September)

During our trip to Sri Lanka, although our itinerary was somewhat fixed, we hoped to have more interactions with the locals. One day, our driver took us down a small road, and we suddenly saw a group of locals bathing and washing clothes by the river. This scene was very fresh and interesting to us, so we asked the driver to stop the car so we could get out and observe. The driver seemed a bit surprised by our interest, not expecting us to be curious about this way of life. My family also enjoyed this experience very much, so we politely asked the locals if we could join them. The locals warmly agreed and said that this was a part of their daily life. My sister bravely went down to the river to experience the traditional way of bathing. Watching her bathe and wash her hair by the river was the first time in our lives that we had seen such a simple and unadorned lifestyle. The locals only used simple soap and clean water, reminiscent of life in Taiwan in the 1950s. This interaction allowed us to gain a deeper understanding of Sri Lankan culture and appreciate the locals' simple way of life.

We just finished a 12-day trip across Sri Lanka with our driver Nalinikanth. He picked us up from our hotel in Colombo and took us to Galle, Yala, Arugam Bay, then up through Ella and Kandy. Our journey ended in Trincomalee before returning to Negombo. He drove cautiously and safely, was always punctual, and easy to communicate with. His van was comfortable, clean, and had excellent air conditioning. We’d definitely recommend Nalinikanth as a professional driver for traveling in Sri Lanka.

We had a truly amazing experience with Kasun as our driver during our trip through Sri Lanka. He picked us up from the airport and drove us to the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, then through the mountains to Yala National Park, and finally to Arugam Bay. Despite the narrow, winding roads, he navigated them with great confidence, making us feel safe throughout the journey. The car was very comfortable for our family of five. Kasun was incredibly helpful, attentive, and kind from start to finish, and his deep knowledge of the country really enhanced our trip. Saying goodbye was genuinely difficult—he felt like a friend by the end. We highly recommend him!

I needed to escape marketing campaigns for a few days. I ended up in Sri Lanka. There are no anime conventions here, but the country has an incredible mystical vibe. Kandy Lake is pure magic. I took a stroll there in the late afternoon, and it honestly felt like a water spirit was about to pop out, giving total Spirited Away vibes. I rented a boat to cruise around. Super relaxing. I stayed at a spot called Tucked Inn, which has a pool and lake views. For food, Chez Shalini is a great place to try the fish curry. The train from Colombo takes about 3 hours, and the ride is a breeze. After that, naturally, I moved on to the "beach episode" phase that any self-respecting anime has. Mirissa is fantastic. I saw whales! They were absolutely massive. I stayed at Blue Ocean Villa, which had an awesome private balcony overlooking the ocean. The seafood at Ocean Blue Seafood is out of this world. Arugam Bay is definitely more for surfers. I don't surf—I'm 40 now and value my spine way too much—but watching people out on the water while sipping coconut water is honestly therapeutic. I stayed at Kelani Bungalow, which was lush and super quiet. For grub, the Beach Hut Restaurant serves up some fantastic grilled fish. It's about a 4-hour bus ride from Colombo, so pack some patience.
