🎉🏔️Hokkaido Winter Exploration Tour🏮|||A Dreamy Snow Journey
Hokkaido, a name you may have heard before, but it is only when you set foot on this land that you truly understand why it is called a must-visit place in a lifetime. Especially in winter, snow is the protagonist, and it is an invitation you cannot resist. If you plan to travel from January to February, this is your ideal destination.
❄️Did you think Hokkaido's winter would be too cold to go out? No, your imagination is wrong. When you are in this snowy world, you will find that the temperature is so pleasant under the sunlight during the day. Under the sun, gloves and hats become unnecessary burdens, and you just need to enjoy this snow feast.
📅How to plan your Hokkaido trip?
Day 1: Departure - New Chitose - Sapporo
As soon as you set foot in the snow of Sapporo, you will be immediately attracted by the unique atmosphere of this city.
Day 2: Sapporo - Asahiyama Zoo - Biei Blue Pond
After exploring Sapporo, head to Asahiyama Zoo to experience the winter wonderland of dancing with animals. Then head to Biei Blue Pond, where the picturesque scenery will make you forget the cold instantly.
Day 3: Mt. Tengu Ropeway - Otaru Experience
Take the Mt. Tengu Ropeway to overlook the panoramic view of Sapporo, and then head to Otaru. Here, you can experience the unique style of Western-style pastry shops and kerosene lamp cafes, and visit Otaru Art Base and Otaru Aquarium. You also have the opportunity to experience making Japanese sweets and visit the Otaru Blue Ice Festival.
In the following days, you will explore the natural beauty of Lake Shikotsu, Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch, Lake Toya, and other places. Whether it is the tranquility by the lake or the spectacular view from the observatory, it will make you linger.
🛀Hot Spring Time: A Perfect Combination of Privacy and Relaxation
In Hokkaido, nothing is more relaxing than soaking in a hot spring. I chose a hotel room with a private hot spring bath to enjoy the unique quietness and privacy. Of course, although I only went to Hell Valley Hot Spring for photos, its charm is still unforgettable.
Get your luggage ready, and let's embark on this winter journey to Hokkaido together!🎒🌬️🏮🎉🏔️
Travel Guide to Hokkaido: Encounter the Snow from 'Love Letter'
Winter in Hokkaido, Japan, is pure and serene in every way.
❄️ The winter here is as gentle as the endless tenderness in 'Love Letter',
❄️ and as beautiful and melancholic as 'Snow Country'.
🎬 A movie called 'Hokkaido'
🎬 starts showing gradually from November.
❄️ Snowflakes gently fall, covering the ground,
❄️ making the whole world seem wrapped in a pure white veil.
Sapporo, Otaru, Asahikawa... these familiar names
✨ appear even more dreamy in the winter snow.
-
1️⃣ Sapporo: Winter Charm in the City
As the capital of Hokkaido,
Sapporo's winter is full of urban vitality and natural tranquility.
Winter is the best time to experience Hokkaido's winter culture.
Huge ice sculptures illuminated by lights
resemble scenes from a fairy tale,
making you feel like you're in a dreamy world of ice and snow.
.
2️⃣ Otaru: Romantic Winter by the Canal
Otaru's canal is particularly serene in winter, with the river frozen,
and the European-style buildings on both sides covered in snow,
as if time has stopped at this moment.
Walking along this canal,
every corner is a beautiful picture.
Why not sit in a café by the canal,
have a cup of hot coffee,
and enjoy the snowy scenery outside, feeling the tranquility and romance?
.
3️⃣ Asahikawa: Winter Paradise for Wildlife
Asahikawa's winter is not just a kingdom of snow,
but also a paradise for various animals,
especially at Asahiyama Zoo,
where the winter penguin🐧 walk is a major highlight.
Watching these adorable animals waddle through the snow,
all the coldness is dispelled by their innocence and joy.
.
4️⃣ Hokkaido Cuisine🥘
First, I highly recommend 'Soup Curry'!
A hot bowl is really comforting!
Sapporo's 🍜 ramen, Hakodate's 🦐 seafood,
every bite is warmth in the winter.
Especially in the cold winter,
a steaming hot 'Ishikari Nabe'🫕
not only warms the body but also the soul.
-
In Hokkaido's winter, snow is no longer synonymous with cold,
but a symbol of warmth and beauty.
In this snowy wonderland,
may every traveler find their own winter story.
This winter, let's go to Hokkaido together!
Encounter Penguin Walk at Asahiyama Zoo
In winter, you can see the adorable penguin walk at Asahiyama Zoo.
You can watch them waddle close up.
The daily walk times are 11:00 and 14:30, don't miss it!
Additionally, there are many other cute animals in the zoo!
This time, I saw a hippo blowing bubbles while sleeping.
In the lion area, every cat behaves like a big cat, even rolling over and folding their paws.
The wolves, on the other hand, sleep like pet dogs at home.
Many online reviews say that the zoo is too small and the animals exhibit stereotypical behaviors.
However, after visiting, I found that the zoo has improved a lot.
Many areas are being renovated and expanded.
There is a direct bus from Asahikawa city center, costing 500 yen per person, which is very convenient!
A Popular Ramen Shop in Asahikawa
I came to Asahikawa City for the first time, so I searched for Asahikawa ramen to eat before leaving and decided to try Ume Koken.
There seems to be a branch at the airport, but the reviews were bad, so I went to the "original store" instead.
Oshibori, water, and disposable chopsticks are self-service.
I thought I should try the soy sauce ramen since I'm in Asahikawa, but I'm not really drawn to soy sauce ramen, so I went for miso instead. I didn't want corn, so I just added a flavored egg.
The miso had a strong garlic flavor, which made me happy.
The char siu wasn't to my taste, maybe not that delicious.
The flavored egg was the best! I'm glad I added it.
The shop closes once at 3 PM and reopens at 5 PM.

Watching penguins walk in the snow, overlooking the romantic Asahikawa after the snow from the tallest building in Asahikawa!
How can the romance of Hokkaido in winter be without the penguin walk in Asahiyama Zoo? Coming to Asahikawa, the first experience is naturally to go to Asahiyama Zoo to watch the penguin walk! The penguins walking slowly and swaying, sometimes rushing into the crowd to gather popularity, sometimes lying on the snow to spread their wings and slide, their cute appearance is lovable.
Actually! Asahiyama Zoo is not just about penguin walks, popular animal stars also include polar bears, red pandas, seals, snowy owls, monkeys, Ezo deer, Ezo brown bears, red-crowned cranes, giraffes... Come to Asahiyama Zoo and see the ecology and behavior of animals that can only be seen in winter! It is recommended to set aside 1 day for a deep interactive tour.
🐧❤️Asahiyama Zoo TIPS:
Winter opening hours: November 11, 2023-April 7, 2024, 10:30-15:30
Tickets: 1000 yen
Transportation: Stay at OMO7 Asahikawa, there is a free bus to Asahiyama Zoo, 20 minutes by car.
Penguin walk: Twice a day at 11:00 and 14:40, it is recommended to go to the walkway on both sides 15-30 minutes in advance to occupy a place!
Special attention: Because most of the time is outdoors, be sure to keep warm! There is a restaurant at the entrance of the zoo, with simple meals.
This time we stayed at OMO7 Asahikawa, which is the tallest building in Asahikawa. You can overlook the cityscape of Asahikawa by taking the sightseeing elevator. Entering the hotel is full of surprises. The birch trunks and various Hokkaido animal dolls that come to face make people feel like they have stepped into the nature of Hokkaido. Many small animals are also wearing cute hats to keep out the cold!
☕OMO Cafe&Bar: Super high ceiling, every angle is beautiful and intriguing, there is a feeling of nowhere to put your eyes!! Staying in the snowy Asahikawa, I recommend coming here for a romantic and beautiful parfait at night! The buffet breakfast is invincible and rich, especially recommended are the tuna wasabi rice and salmon waffles!
📚I like to sit in the book tunnel that looks like a loft, holding a healing book of Hokkaido, which is my Happy Hour on the journey!
💧Every night at 8 o'clock there is a lecture on Asahiyama Zoo in the lobby, and different contents will be talked about with different seasons. The welcome drink faucet at the front desk is too cute, the faucet opening ceremony is full, remember to try the corn-flavored welcome drink🌽
♨️Hot spring sauna: The hotel's sauna room is very spacious, and the life of soaking in the hot spring after skiing is too comfortable!! Hot spring + sauna + cold bath + rest, you can follow these several procedures to cycle 3-4 groups, completely relax your body and mind! You can come every day from 15:30 to 24:00 and in the morning from 5:00 to 9:00!
🍜OMO Ranger: You can explore the Asahikawa 57 alley full of fireworks together, the three soul foods of Asahikawa: soy sauce ramen, new child roast, salt-grilled large intestine must be tasted! In addition, you can go to Paris Road at night to experience Japanese Western cuisine!
🏂🏻Ski convenience:️ There are many ski guests staying here, so you can see many people polishing and maintaining snowboards in the lobby, and there is information about various surrounding ski resorts next to it.
Checking in at Asahikawa, a small and beautiful city! Attached is a guide to Asahiyama Zoo
🐧The city tour of Asahikawa starts with a morning penguin walk at Asahiyama Zoo. In the early morning, the Asahiyama Zoo covered in white snow is quiet and serene, and the waddling emperor penguins take a leisurely walk around the park, their adorable appearance causing visitors to lower their voices in constant admiration.
☃️Asahiyama Zoo is the northernmost zoo in Japan, with a history of 50 years. It has penguins, polar bears, box horses, red-crowned cranes, giraffes, etc. The areas are relatively concentrated and can be basically completed in half a day. The scenery is unbeatable after the snow.

🏨We stayed at Hoshino OMO7 Asahikawa Hotel, where there is a city walk guided by a guide every day. Followed the OMO Ranger to explore Asahikawa's 57 alleys and Paris Road in the evening. The former is a food-filled alley where you can eat Asahikawa's three soul foods: soy sauce ramen, grilled new child, and salt-grilled large intestine. The latter Paris Road mainly serves Japanese Western cuisine, which is very stylish!
💡Asahikawa is not big, Hoshino OMO7 Asahikawa store is well located, convenient transportation, and it is the tallest building in Asahikawa, with a first-class view. The public space in the store is reasonably divided, the atmosphere is relaxed and pleasant, there are rich activities every day, and it is extremely fulfilling and comfortable just here.
🍹The hotel has a full-fledged welcome drink, free hot springs, free snow gear care area, reading area, and different content sharing sessions in the evening. You can supplement your knowledge about Asahiyama Zoo here first.
🍧Hoshino OMO7 Asahikawa's limited edition seven strawberry ice cream and ramen ice cream are very creative and full of creativity. Don't miss it if you like it~ Asahikawa travel is enough for one day, but two days are more relaxed~😄
The itinerary for this trip to Hokkaido is very reasonable, convenient and time-saving!
1⃣ First stop: Asahiyama Zoo to watch penguins
In the morning, head to Asahiyama Zoo. The penguins walk at 11 am, so you need to arrive and buy tickets in advance. Take a 1.5-hour express train from Sapporo Station, and choose the 8 am train. After arriving at Asahikawa Station, immediately go to platform 6 and take the 9:40 bus from Asahikawa Station to Asahiyama Zoo, which takes about 40 minutes and costs 500 yen. After arriving at the zoo, buy tickets and queue up to enter, it is expected to be around 10:30. Then go to the penguin walking route, find a good photo spot, and wait for the penguins to appear.
2⃣ Second stop: Lonely Christmas Tree.
After watching the penguins, please be sure to enjoy a bowl of hot ramen near the main exit of the zoo (make sure to choose the main exit). The restaurant is in the park, do not leave the park. Then, prepare to take the bus from the zoo to Asahikawa Station (the bus stop is in front of the main entrance of the zoo). You can check the bus schedule on Google Maps, we chose a bus around 12:10. After arriving at Asahikawa Station, take the Furano Line to Biei Station, which takes about 1 hour. Once you arrive at Biei Station, use Google Maps to search for "クリスマスツリーの木" (I tried English search and it didn't work), and follow the navigation for about 20 minutes to arrive. The scenery along the way is very beautiful, just like what you see in pictures 2 to 5, you can take pictures while walking. It is recommended to arrive at the Christmas tree before 2:30 in the afternoon, because taking pictures may take a lot of time, and it gets dark very early, so you must ensure that there is enough time to return to Biei Station to catch the return train. The train intervals in this small rural area are relatively long, so you need to arrange your itinerary based on the train time on Google Maps (we chose a train around 4 o'clock to return to Asahikawa Station, and then return to Sapporo from Asahikawa). Please pay special attention: all transportation card points need to be checked and confirmed on Google Maps to match your itinerary!

Admission ticket is 1,000 yen. Take bus number 41, 42 or 47 from Asahikawa Station and takes about 40 minutes which cost 500 yen.

🌟In winter, Hokkaido is very windy, blowing painfully on the face. The sky is also filled with fluffy snowflakes. Get up early to go to Asahiyama Zoo to see the penguins. They waddle out so cute. There are also furry little raccoons, whose big tails can be used as scarves. Just looking at them makes you feel warm.
🌟Seals or sea lions, I can't tell them apart. They always seem to have a smiling expression, but I can't tell if their eyes are open or closed. Sometimes they swim happily, and sometimes they float quietly on the surface, basking in the sun. They look so relaxed, but I wonder if they're sleeping. I always feel like animals without fur protection must be cold, while animals with fur protection must have cold feet.
🌟In order to get a close look at polar bears, the zoo designed curved glass windows that protrude from the ground. A big brother stuck his head out and took non-stop photos under the bear's butt, which was really funny. But if you want to see brown bears, you still have to go to the Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch, which has 100 purebred Hokkaido brown bears located at the foot of the mountain. The ticket has a picture of a little bear catching fish. The ranch divides the bear areas by age group, and there is food for sale at the entrance. Brown bears are very intelligent, holding onto the iron bars with their paws, their small eyes turning and chattering, especially clever.

Asahiyama Zoo

The Asahiyama Zoo is a municipal zoo that opened in July 1967 in Asahikawa, Hokkaidō, Japan, and is the northernmost zoo in the country.
Penguins are one of the zoo's most popular animals. You can walk through underwater tunnels as they swim overhead. In winter, everyone waits for the penguin walk, when they waddle along outside of their enclosures in front of the crowd like a tiny army.
Exploring an exotic ‘ecosystem’!
Despite the freezing weather, with the icy wind biting at every inch of my exposed skin, I can say that I had an amazing time at Asahiyama Zoo! I cannot recommend this zoo enough, from its wide variety of enclosures to the insightful information that the zookeepers had shared, especially during the Penguin Feeding Time. Sadly, me and my family had missed the famed Penguin Walk, which is the talk of the town and the only reason that we had ventured to the zoo in the first place. However, I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of fun that I had even without watching cute penguins scuttling around with their webbed feet. Definitely a must-go if you were to visit Asahikawa!

High-quality meat, grilled with stone.
I personally feel that the price is reasonable considering the quality of this meat.
Stone-grilled meat that you can't taste at other restaurants. The meat was delicious and the staff was very friendly, so we had a great time.
May this new year take everyone to places that never been before.

Penguins catwalk show
This is Asahiyama zoo located in Asahikawa, Hokkaido prefecture. There are buses to the zoo from Asahikawa station and it takes approximately 45 minutes to reach. The marching event are held twice daily at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m during December till around mid-March when the snow starts to melt. The penguins are so cute! It was so cool to be able to watch them in such close proximity >.< Of course, there are also other animals to visit!

[Asahikawa] Miura Ayako Memorial Hall
Hello!
This is Trip.com Online Supporter 2nd Generation Cha.
In this Trip Moment,
I will introduce the "Miura Ayako Memorial Literature Museum" located in Asahikawa, Japan!!
Miura Ayako was a very famous writer for my parents' generation.
I wonder if many Koreans visit the literature museum.
The explanation in Korean was very good!
The forest behind the literature museum is said to be related to Miura Ayako's novel "Freezing Point"
It's easy to get there by car,
but it seems difficult to visit by public transportation.ㅠㅠ
The walking path is also very well-made,
so it would be good to visit with your parents👍

In Asahikawa, Hokkaido, there is a snow-themed art museum: SnowCrystalMuseum, the museum's architecture uses European medieval style, plus thick white snow, everything is pure white, very suitable for photo punching.
In addition to the beautiful exterior, there are various snow-themed exhibition halls inside. As soon as you walk into the art gallery, you will design a hexagonal spiral staircase along the various snow shapes to enter the world of snow. There are also materials and videos about snowflake knowledge for visitors to watch, as well as auditoriums and banquet halls that can be used for weddings. Weddings here must be both romantic and dreamy.

To Hokkaido in winter, Asahikawa is a must-see. The most famous attraction in Asahikawa is the Asahiyama Zoo. The most popular attraction for the Asahiyama Zoo is the penguin walk. There is one at 11 am every day and one at half past two in the afternoon.
The whole penguin walk is about half an hour. Once you enter the zoo, you can see the place where you can watch the penguins take a walk. It doesn't matter where you line up at the beginning. The penguin keeps going until you get back. Your own "home", follow the pace of the penguin to move your position, you can definitely find a good position to watch and take pictures.
In addition to penguins, Asahiyama Zoo and polar bears, raccoons, deer, giraffes and other animals, watching animals in the snow and ice, is also a special experience.
The decoration in the zoo is very love, the material is photographed everywhere, even the vending machine is also animal-themed, so cute, foul!

In the past, when talking about Japan's most famous zoo, people will naturally mention the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo. Today, when it comes to the most popular, it is the Asahiyama Zoo on the outskirts of Asahikawa, Hokkaido, Japan, the northernmost zoo in Japan. As the Asahiyama Zoo, in addition to a variety of common animals, there are also creatures in the cold northern regions such as seals and polar bears.
Transportation: Take the Asahikawa Electric Rail Bus from Asahikawa Station and arrive at Asahiyama Zoo in 40 minutes. Tickets are 440 yen. The station is on the side of Asahikawa Station. We bought the ticket for the zoo + snow village at the station in advance, 1800 yen, free for children. The zoo opened at 10:30 and counted the time on the road. We went to the station at 9:00, and there were already many people. The 20-minute bus on the Internet was not. When it was full, it was driven away, and then immediately. Connected to the first, the zoo said that it opened at 10:30, in fact 10
Hoshino Resorts OMO7 Asahikawa Hotel Experience: A great all-round trip.
Hoshino Resorts OMO7 Asahikawa Hotel Review 😉
Appearance and design ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Hokkaido's small animal elements can be seen everywhere, which is very cute. The sauna room lobby is full of small animals steaming in the sauna, and the overall design style is a warm and high-end natural style.
Comfort ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The room is not big, but the layout is very reasonable, and the luggage can be placed under the bed, which is very considerate.
Sauna recommendation ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The hotel provides bathrobes, and the hot spring and sauna are super relaxing, and there are free drinks and popsicles to enjoy.
Breakfast recommendation ⭐⭐⭐⭐ The taste is very good, and there are a variety of options. Seafood rice and salmon waffles are highly recommended 😋
Location ⭐⭐⭐ It is about 1 km from Asahikawa Station, about an 8-minute walk to the pedestrian shopping street (with many restaurants), and only a 3-minute walk to the highly recommended traditional sukiyaki restaurant Sankosha.
Activities ⭐⭐⭐⭐ There are free guided city exploration tours every day, and Hokkaido animal lectures in the evening, which are very suitable for families with children 👨👩👧
The overall check-in experience is quite good, and I recommend everyone to come.

The Hokkaido Pioneers’ Memorial Monument, unveiled in August 1970 (Shōwa 45), stands as a tribute to the indomitable spirit of the pioneers who braved Hokkaido’s harsh winters and untamed wilderness. The sculpture, “Fūsetsu no Gunjetsu” (Gallant Figures Amidst Wind and Snow), embodies their resilience and collective effort in shaping the vast northern lands under the wide sky.
This monument captures the essence of human perseverance and creativity, blending natural beauty with historical significance. Surrounded by a vibrant landscape that transforms with the seasons, it offers visitors a moment to reflect on the challenges faced by those who came before.
Visiting the memorial is both humbling and inspiring. It reminds us that progress often demands courage and unity. For history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike, this site is an essential stop, rich in symbolism and storytelling, encapsulating the dreams and triumphs of a bygone era.
