Art Hotel Asahikawa Hokkaido This is a 4-star hotel in Asahikawa City. We stayed here while waiting to go play in the snow. We got a double room with a pretty good amount of space—easily fitting two large 28-inch suitcases. They also provided pajamas and a bathtub for a relaxing soak. The room is considered quite spacious compared to typical Japanese standards. There's an onsen, a sauna, and a fitness center, though we didn't have time to use them since our schedule was pretty tight. They offer free high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, a laundry service, and there's a convenience store right across the street. The absolute highlight for us was the incredible variety at the breakfast buffet. There were so many options we couldn't possibly try them all! It makes staying at this hotel totally worth it. 

A breathtaking 2.2 million sunflowers in full bloom spread across a vast field. It's an absolute masterpiece, with sunflowers covering as far as the eye can see. Admission is free. There's a dining area in a single-story building near the parking lot, where I tried Yahachi's sunflower soft serve ice cream. The ice cream has crushed sunflower seeds blended right in. The seeds taste just like almonds, making it super delicious😋 I ate a ton of soft serve ice cream during my Hokkaido trip, but this sunflower one was definitely the best. (Just my personal opinion, though!) The price was 300 yen at the time. About a 25-minute drive from Hokuryu Town, there's a museum. When you pay admission for kids, they receive a special rock with a hidden fossil inside. You can't crack it open right there, but we had a blast breaking it open once we got home. Inside, you can see the Numata-nagasukujira (Numata fin whale) and Numata-nezumi (Numata mouse). These are mammal fossils discovered in Numata and named after the town. (Dating back to the Oligocene epoch.) Most of the fossils found in Numata come from the Neogene strata of the Cenozoic era. Admission: Adults 500 yen, Children 300 yen. If you cross the bridge at Kamuikotan, you can see an old locomotive and a historic station building. It has a wonderful nostalgic vibe. It's completely free to visit. 2023.8

This time I chose a plan without meals, but their breakfast buffet is recommended if you don't plan to eat out, as the seafood is delicious. Check-out is at 11am, so you can relax. The Biei tour was the part of my Sapporo trip I was most looking forward to, and it truly exceeded my expectations! Asahikawa and Biei: 2 Days, 1 Night | Enjoy a Winter Trip Without a Car, Using Public Transportation Only ⸻ · Day 1 | Asahikawa → Asahiyama Zoo → Biei (Overnight Stay) Take an early morning flight from Haneda to Asahikawa. Asahikawa Airport is compact and easy to navigate. After arriving, I ate Asahikawa ramen while waiting for the bus, then took the direct bus to the zoo. Asahiyama Zoo (10:30 AM - 2:00 PM) I arrived just in time for winter opening hours. My stay was about 3.5 hours, but I was able to fully enjoy the main exhibits, including penguins, seals, and polar bears. The animals at Asahiyama Zoo are very active in winter, and despite the cold, my visit was very satisfying. Zoo → Asahikawa Station → Biei In the afternoon, I took a bus to Asahikawa Station. I stopped by a shop directly connected to the station to browse for souvenirs. Afterwards, I took the JR Furano Line to Biei. Arrival in Biei - Join the Tour Biei Half-Day Sightseeing Bus Tour (4:35 PM - 7:30 PM) Biei in winter is difficult without a car, but this tour allowed me to efficiently visit the sights, including the winter illuminations of the Blue Pond and Shirahige Falls. The snowy scenery in the evening and at night is difficult to see on my own, so public transportation is especially recommended. Dinner & Accommodation After the tour, we had dinner near Biei Station. Since restaurants close early, it's safe to arrive around 8:00 PM and leave around 8:20 PM. Check into the pension by 9:00 PM. We asked the yakiniku restaurant where we had dinner to call a taxi for us. Note that taxis generally require cash! ⸻ · Day 2 | Biei → Asahikawa → Return Early Morning Depending on the weather, we might take a short walk around the accommodation. If the conditions were right, we might have been able to see diamond dust, but unfortunately, thick clouds blocked our view. Breakfast & Checkout After breakfast at the inn, we walked to a nearby bakery, as taxis wouldn't be available until after 11:00 AM. We had an early lunch and then called a taxi to Biei Station. (We didn't have any cash, so we had to stop at a convenience store along the way. Be careful!) Biei → Asahikawa Airport → Haneda We then took a bus to Asahikawa Airport. Since it was a domestic flight, we were able to bring back liquids like beer katsugen (cartons) and jam we'd bought at the convenience store without any issues. ⸻ · Overall Impressions/Ratings · This itinerary is perfectly doable even in winter and on snowy roads, even without a rental car. · The combination of Asahiyama Zoo and a Biei tour is excellent. · Because traveling independently in Biei in winter is difficult, I realized that using a tour greatly impacts satisfaction. The location is excellent, right next to Nijo Market, where you can enjoy a seafood meal before heading out each day. Restaurants: At Nijo Market, I chose Demekin でめきん (last three photos). The fish is incredibly fresh, and the fried oysters 🦪 are a must-try—juicy and bursting with flavor 😍. For soup curry, I went to King (second photo). People line up in the snow, so I recommend going early. The broth is delicious, and the portions of vegetables and meat are generous. I ordered the chicken and vegetable soup curry with minced meat and a soft-boiled egg, and it was incredibly satisfying 😍. Attractions: At Asahiyama Zoo, don't miss the penguin walk at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. The seals and leopards are adorable, with the leopards resembling black sesame seeds. I suggest heading to the penguin area first to watch the walk, then slowly making your way up to the exit for a smoother visit. The Blue Pond in Biei is mostly frozen and white in winter, so it doesn't look like the iconic blue pond. If it's not a must-see for you, consider skipping it to save time. However, the Shirahige Waterfall is genuinely beautiful. For the best photos, crouch down to shoulder height near the railing and have a friend hold the phone high to capture a stunning panoramic shot. The Terrace of Frost Trees is usually crowded, so getting a good photo depends on your luck in finding a moment without people in the background.
