My solo journey exploring New Zealand will always hold a special place in my heart. I chose this trip because I needed to escape, breathe, and reset after losing my father. Throughout the entire journey, I truly felt my late Abah guiding me...protecting me in his own quiet way...because I’ve always been his favorite daughter. Travelling alone in New Zealand felt safe, peaceful, and strangely comforting. Every moment was meaningful, whether the sun was shining or the cold wind was brushing against my face. I explored the country using only buses, and it was so convenient that I didn’t even need to think about Uber or renting a car. Everything was easy, smooth, and perfectly suited for a solo traveler. One of the highlights was meeting my Malaysian friends who are studying and working there. Their warmth made the trip even more pleasant, like carrying a bit of home with me. When people asked where my next destination would be, I decided to choose a country I had never visited before, "New Zealand," and it turned out to be the perfect choice. I even had fun moments playing with the sheep… their pink noses and fluffy bodies made me laugh nonstop. Hahaha! I tried a ribeye paired with seasonal vegetables and a bold local red wine, and it was pure perfection. What stood out was the freshness—you can taste the difference in every bite. The restaurant was casual yet stylish, with a focus on sustainability and local farming. Auckland showed me that steak isn’t just about indulgence—it can also be about respect for nature and quality.

Fishing Tales: At five in the morning, Auckland's sky was still draped in a deep blue curtain, the dock lights casting a warm yellow glow in the humid air. Standing on the deck of the yacht, I was met by the salty sea breeze, mingled with the scent of diesel and fish. In the distance, a few seagulls circled in the darkness, their calls echoing clearly. This was my first time sea fishing in Auckland. Captain Mark, my companion, was a typical Kiwi, his bronze skin etched with wrinkles, resembling a reef weathered by the sea. Check out the deets below to check what you should hit up 👌 Getting There - Auckland Airport is the oblivious choice here and there’s public transport options to take from the airport to the city. I opted for the $18 skydrive bus as it only took 40 minutes to reach the CBD. Attractions - 1️⃣ Take the short ferry ride to Devonport and walk up to Victoria Summit for great views of the city at sunset 🌅2️⃣Take a slightly longer ferry ride to Rangitoto Island and hike up to the summit of the dormant volcano for more breathtaking views! (Be sure to check the ferry schedule to this island as it’s not very frequent and you don’t want to get stuck!) 3️⃣ Check out Mount Eden to see the skyline from a different perspective (Auckland has a lot of dormant volcanoes to hike 😂)4️⃣ Explore the CBD and check out the architecture and if you want to, go up the top of the sky tower (I didn’t as I didn’t think it was worth the price when the city has so many hills and mountains to climb up). Hotels - I stayed in the Holiday Inn Express Auckland City and it was great. It had good sound insulation, big rooms and wonderful buffet style breakfast! 🏩 Food & Restaurants - There are lots of food options in the city and to be honest I didn’t eat much as I was so full from my hotel breakfast. But one place I would recommend is the Seafood Collective 🐟at Mt Eden. They have excellent fish and chips and, coming from Ireland, I was very impressed. Shopping 🛍️ - Check out the Dress Smart outlets near Onehunga. It’s easy to reach by bus number 30 from the downtown and they have some really good deals for well known brands. So today on my short stay in Auckland, I spent the time I had to capture some decorations that stand out in the city area. I was hoping to see more fun and colourful decorations but I wasn’t lucky time. Once happy with my pictures, I get myself some boiled mussels with white wine and creamy sauce at The Occidental. It was a nice way to end the day.
