We went to a hot spring inn in Awara Onsen, one of the most popular hot spring resorts in the Hokuriku region, where you can stay with your pet. This is a pet-first inn where pets are allowed in all areas of the building except for the large public bath. This hotel is located near the lake. It's about a 10-minute taxi ride from JR Awara Station. There's nothing around but the lake, and the hotel has a shop, but if you want something to drink or something, I recommend buying it at the station. There are two baths, and from both the large bath and the open-air bath you can slowly watch the lake as it sunset. I booked a room with a Western-style bed, but the Japanese-modern atmosphere was very nice. For breakfast and dinner, we had a course meal using local ingredients. There were many small children, so they were very considerate and made sure to welcome them. It's also recommended for families. Since I was there, I chose the Sweet Shrimp Bowl from the Mikuni seafood bowl menu. It was a luxurious bowl with 12 sweet shrimp neatly arranged. The translucent flesh was creamy and sweet, and dipping it in wasabi soy sauce enhanced the umami even further. After enjoying the meat, the key is to suck on the head as you continue eating. I thoroughly enjoyed the rich flavor of the miso. The balance with the rice was exquisite, and I finished the bowl at a steady pace. At Kappo Katsu in Awara City, we had a meal of snow crab (zubogani) + sashimi platter + grilled yellowtail collar + seared bonito + fried oysters + Echizen grated daikon radish soba noodles. This was my first time trying freshly molted snow crab, "zubogani" (water crab), which is only available for about a month from February to March. While not quite soft-shelled, the shell was soft and easy to peel by hand. True to its name, the flavor was high in moisture and juicy, characterized by a delicate and fleeting savory taste. 🦀 The sashimi platter was superbly fresh, and the grilled yellowtail collar had an exquisite amount of fat. The seared bonito had a good balance of savory flavor and umami, and the fried oysters were crispy on the outside and tender inside. A meal that allowed us to enjoy a wide variety of seafood delicacies. Of course, we finished with Echizen grated daikon radish soba noodles. The spiciness of the grated daikon radish and the aroma of the soba noodles soothed our palate, resulting in a stunning finish. While the menu doesn't list prices, the bill is clear and transparent. It's an 8-minute walk from Awara Yunomachi Station through the city center. It's Isshintei, a pork cutlet restaurant. While Fukui is famous for its sauce katsudon, this one is called the "toji-nai katsudon," a bowl of rice topped with a soft-boiled egg. You can choose between soy sauce or sauce. The photo shows a chicken fillet katsudon with soy sauce. The cutlet was crispy, and the soy sauce broth added a nice flavor. Give this toji-nai katsudon a try.

The Yukake Matsuri (Water-Sprinkling Festival) is held every year on August 8th and 9th in Awara City, Fukui Prefecture. Food stalls begin setting up in the evening in the square in front of Yunomachi Station, followed by stage events. The main event begins at 8:45 PM on the 8th, when hot water rains down from a tower erected in front of the station and from a mikoshi (portable shrine) paraded down the street!
