2026 Bad Ischl Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in September)

As a world-renowned destination, Hallstatt has long been on my bucket list. Yet, perhaps because of its overwhelming popularity, I was never in a rush to check it off. My recent trip to the Dolomites in Northern Italy and Austria finally gave me the perfect chance to visit. Here is a recap of my three-day, two-night getaway in Hallstatt. ▌Transportation Since driving in Austria wasn't an option for me last year, I took public transit from Salzburg to Hallstatt. There are two main routes: A. Train + Train + Boat, total travel time is about 2.5 hours. Salzburg -> Attnang-Puchheim -> Hallstatt Bahnhof -> Hallstatt Markt (Note: From July 11 to August 2, 2026, the train between Attnang-Puchheim and Bad Ischl will be suspended due to construction. A Rail Replacement Bus will be provided. Buses will wait outside the stations, and staff will be on-site to assist you.) B. Bus + Train + Boat, total travel time is about 2 hours. Salzburg -> Bad Ischl Bahnhof -> Hallstatt Bahnhof -> Hallstatt Markt Traveling with two large 29-inch suitcases, two carry-on bags, and backpacks, I felt taking the bus would be too inconvenient, so I opted for the train + train + boat route. Attnang-Puchheim station is quite compact, making transfers a breeze. Trains arriving at Hallstatt Bahnhof are perfectly timed with the ferry schedule. As long as your train isn't ridiculously delayed, the ferry will wait. One day, on my way back from St. Wolfgang, the train was delayed, and it was already 7:00 PM by the time we arrived at Hallstatt Bahnhof. The last ferry was at 6:50 PM, but the captain actually walked up to the train station to wait for the delayed train and usher the passengers aboard. The ferry is cash only; in 2025, the fare is €4 per person. ▌Accommodation For accommodation, I chose Pepi's Apartment. The apartment was spacious and tucked away from the noisy town center, making it wonderfully peaceful both morning and night. The grandmother who hosts it is just as sweet and welcoming as the reviews say. ▌Travel Experience I stayed in Hallstatt for three days and two nights. Just as many reviews mention, the most beautiful moments are early morning and evening. With the noise of tourists gone, all that remains is the tranquil lake and a crisp, gentle breeze. If your schedule allows, I highly recommend staying here for at least one night to truly experience Hallstatt's peaceful side. It's an absolute world of difference from its usual daytime hustle and bustle. Since I was staying right in town, I walked up to the Hallstatt viewpoint every day, capturing its classic angles and different looks at dawn and dusk. I also ran into photographers from all over the world. Their one shared trait: braving the freezing winds in absolute silence just to take photos.

Not afraid you’ll laugh, but I originally planned to stay only two days in Salzburg city and then leave. However, a local friend’s words changed my entire itinerary—"If you don’t go to the lake district, it’s like you never came to Austria." Half skeptical, I took bus 150, and I was completely captivated by the emerald lakes among the Alps 💎 This place feels unreal!! 🗺️ Where exactly is the lake district Salzkammergut, which translates to "salt region," is about an hour east of Salzburg by car or bus. It’s home to more than 70 lakes of various sizes. The most famous towns are St. Wolfgang, Hallstatt, Bad Ischl, and St. Gilgen. Many people just visit Hallstatt for a quick stop, but from experience, you need at least two to three days in the lake district, or it’s not worth it. 🏡 About accommodations The guesthouse is on a lakeside slope near St. Wolfgang town, about a 10-minute walk north from the town center pier along the lakeside promenade. It’s far from the noisy area where daytime tour boats dock. Opening the window, you face Wolfgang Lake and the distant Schafberg mountain ⛰️ The two-story wooden cabin has a large terrace that extends outward. Sitting on the terrace drinking coffee in the morning mist rising from the lake—this atmosphere still lingers with me. The host grows lavender in the yard, and in July, the scent mixed with lake mist drifts into the room—absolutely amazing. 🚌 How to get to the lake district from Salzburg No need to drive! Public transportation works perfectly. Take bus 150 from Salzburg Hbf train station; it’s about 50 minutes to Bad Ischl, the transportation hub of the lake district. From there, you can transfer to a train to Hallstatt (20 minutes) or take bus 546 to St. Wolfgang. The Salzburg Card covers bus 150 for free, but the train transfer and bus 546 are not included and require separate tickets. The ÖBB app is the most accurate for checking schedules. 📅 Day 1 Bad Ischl + St. Wolfgang Start the morning in Bad Ischl, the town where Empress Sisi and Emperor Franz Joseph got engaged. You can visit the Kaiservilla royal villa. But I recommend Konditorei Zauner, a pastry shop opened in 1834 that Sisi visited daily. Their Zaunerstollen nut cake and chestnut cake paired with a Melange coffee ☕ on the terrace by the Traun River is the true Austrian way to relax. In the afternoon, take the bus to St. Wolfgang. The town is small but so picturesque every building looks like a painting. The highlight is the Schafberg cog railway! The red cog train has been running since 1893, climbing from the foot to the 1,783-meter summit in about 40 minutes, passing through clouds and meadows 🚂 From the top, you can see 14 lakes at once!! In July, the summit temperature is around the teens Celsius, with strong winds, so bring a windbreaker. Round-trip tickets cost about 40 euros. It’s best to book online in advance because queues can be an hour long during peak season. 📅 Day 2 In-depth Hallstatt tour Take the bus from St. Wolfgang to Bad Ischl, then transfer to a train, and get off at Hallstatt Bahnhof to take a ferry across the lake. The whole trip takes about an hour and a half. The ferry round-trip costs 7 euros and takes 10 minutes. Hallstatt is very crowded during the day. The key is to arrive early! The first ferry leaves around 7 AM, so you can get into town before the tour groups. Head straight to the postcard viewpoint—about a 10-minute walk south from the pier. This is the angle you see on all postcards 📸 Then stroll along the lakeside road to Marktplatz, the market square, where colorful houses surround a fountain—every photo looks like a masterpiece. In the morning, visit Salzwelten salt mine, the oldest salt mine in the world. It features slides and an underground salt lake. Tickets with a guided tour cost about 40 euros, and the experience is unforgettable. For lunch, eat lake trout at Gasthof Simony, with a terrace facing the lake. If you still have energy in the afternoon, hike the Echerntal trail toward the waterfall for about half an hour. The trail is quiet and scenic, with icy cold streams that feel like natural air conditioning in July. 📅 Day 3 St. Gilgen + Mondsee St. Gilgen is the birthplace of Mozart’s mother and has a small Mozart museum. But the biggest highlight is taking the Zwölferhorn Seilbahn cable car, which was renovated in 2024 with brand-new panoramic glass cabins. From the top, you can overlook Wolfgang Lake shaped like a curved sword 🗡️ The blue-green color is breathtaking. If you have time after descending, visit Mondsee, where the wedding scene from The Sound of Music was filmed in the cathedral, which is free to enter. 💰 Lake district spending guide ▫️ Bus 150 one way costs about 10–12 euros, free with the Salzburg Card ▫️ Schafberg cog railway round-trip about 44 euros, book online in advance ▫️ Hallstatt ferry round-trip 7 euros ▫️ Salt mine ticket about 40 euros ▫️ Zwölferhorn cable car round-trip about 25 euros ▫️ Dining in the lake district is about 20% more expensive than in the city, with main dishes costing 18–25 euros ▫️ Staying two nights in a guesthouse costs about 60–90 euros per person per night. Book two to three months in advance for July and August peak season 🧳 Lake district survival tips · Sunscreen! The lake surface reflects UV rays stronger than you think. Start with SPF 50 · Bring water shoes or sandals—you might want to go in the water anytime · Bus intervals in the lake district are long. Check schedules in advance to avoid waiting · The P5 parking lot in the Hallstatt tunnel is self-pay. If driving, parking here is closer than at the town entrance · St. Wolfgang lakeside has a public swimming area. In July, water temperature can reach just over 20 degrees Celsius. Don’t hesitate to jump in · Bring a power bank. The lake district’s mountains sometimes cause spotty signal On the day I returned from the lake district to Salzburg, it was drizzling. Bus 150 wound through mountain roads, and outside the window were misty lakes and pine forests. Suddenly, I understood why Austrians say: Our lakes don’t need filters. They really don’t

Day 1 Fairyland Double Route|Hallstatt Morning Scenery + Gosau Lake Hiking Focus on early morning off-peak travel to avoid crowds and enjoy the entire mountain and lake scenery alone. 🌞 07:05 Depart on time Take the train and transfer to bus 543, arriving at Hallstatt North Station at 07:43 ‼️ Key Tip: Never get off at Hallstatt main station! It’s on the opposite side of the lake and requires a ferry detour, wasting an extra half hour. 🌞 Morning Lakeside Stroll Get off directly at Hallstatt Lahn bus stop and walk slowly along the lake. The early morning Hallstatt is misty and empty, with snowy mountains reflecting on the lake, peaceful and soothing. The walk takes about 1 hour, enough to capture all the popular photo spots. 🌞 Gosau Lake Deep Hiking 08. 37 Take bus 544 (seamless transfer to 541 at the same platform, no walking needed) 09. 14 Arrive at Gosau First Lake, Austria’s most beautiful glacier lake. ✅ Hiking Route (easy for beginners): Walk around the first lake → pass the double-layer waterfall at the second lake → light climb to the third lake. About 2.5 hours total, very easy difficulty, even beginners can handle it easily. There is a mountain restaurant by the third lake for dining with a view, or bring your own food for a lakeside picnic with great atmosphere. 🌞 Afternoon Town Stroll 14:37 Take the bus to Gosau town, check out the fairy-tale wooden houses and hillside popular buildings. 16:07 Return to Bad Ischl, ending a perfect and relaxed day. Take the boat across St. Wolfgang Lake directly to the Schafberg Mountain cog railway station. ‼️ Important Tip: Schafberg cog railway tickets must be purchased online in advance on sunny days! Use the same website as the boat tickets, and be sure to select precise times for ascending and descending. Bad Ischl is central, and the buses run on time, though you have to watch the schedules closely on the ÖBB app. On the first day, I took the 8:00 AM bus to Gosau. The ride was about 40 minutes. I walked the 3.5 km path around the front lake. It was quiet in the morning, and the water reflection of the Dachstein peak was clear. Good scenery, but my feet were quite cold. Later, I walked to the Calvary Church, which has a nice pink structure against the mountains. A major issue here is food—almost all the restaurants in Gosau closed by 4:00 PM, and I had to head back to Bad Ischl to find dinner. The second day was for the Schafberg train. I left at 7:30 AM, took bus 150 to St. Gilgen, and then a boat to St. Wolfgang. It took some time. The main highlight was the old steam cog railway from 1893.
