✈️ Dutch Paintings Encountered at the Airport — A Visit to Rijksmuseum Schiphol in April 2023
After completing immigration procedures, I arrived at Holland Boulevard. Suddenly, I was greeted by a sophisticated glass pavilion, hard to believe it was part of an airport.
This small exhibition space featured a selection of Dutch paintings, primarily from the 17th to 19th centuries, a period that was just coming to an end at the time. The serene landscapes by Jan van Goyen and Michiel van Mierevelt, and still lifes by Abraham Mignon lined up in a tranquil space, instantly relieving the fatigue of travel.
Although only a few works were on display, the glass architecture and soft lighting combined to create an unforgettable experience, even a 30-minute stay. This is a perfect opportunity to uncover art during your travels.
After viewing the exhibits, I browsed for postcards and small goods in the shop, read a book in the on-site art library, or enjoyed some reading material on my iPad. Even though I was inside the airport, the space gave me the feeling of being in a city gallery.
🏛 Exhibition Overview (April 2023)
• Exhibition Theme: "Setting the Table" is a special exhibition of eight still lifes and everyday scenes depicting 17th-century Dutch food culture. Works by Gabriël Metsu, Cornelis Dusart, Abraham Mignon, and Pieter Gallis are featured, depicting the dining experiences of both the common people and the wealthy at the time through tableware, fruit, and trade goods such as meat, cheese, and tobacco.
• Exhibition Period: While the exhibition is scheduled to run from November 17, 2023 to November 2024, it is likely that the exhibition had not yet opened as of April 2023. It appears that a separate exhibition focusing on landscape paintings from the previous century was taking place immediately prior to the exhibition.
• Venue Design: NEXT Architects' S-shaped glass pavilion (approximately 167 square meters) offers a quiet and tranquil viewing experience. Free admission 24 hours a day. Located between Lounges 2 and 3 on Holland Boulevard after security.
• Exhibition History: As of April 2023, "19th Century Landscape Paintings" and other master works were on display before the 17th Century exhibition. The "ibecomingdutch" (updated May 2025) introduced the 19th Century Landscape exhibition.

🖼 Viewing Experience (From the Perspective of a Traveler at the Airport in April 2023)
✈️ Encountering Art in the Airport
After passing through immigration, a glass pavilion suddenly appears on Holland Boulevard. Stepping inside, you'll find a tranquil mini-museum, secluded from the hustle and bustle of the airport. Open 24 hours a day and free of charge, it's a convenient stop during your travels, adding a touch of elegance to your trip. The spacious environment makes it a perfect place to rest, even for travelers with heavy luggage.
🎨 Encountering the Exhibits
At the time, the exhibition predated the 17th century, and featured a small selection of 19th-century landscapes and works by Dutch Golden Age masters. Specifically, the exhibits featured landscapes, seascapes, and still lifes by Jan van Goyen, Willem van de Velde II, Michiel van Mierevelt, and Abraham Mignon.
The colorful and meticulously composed works, depicting expansive waterfronts, ships, flowers, and everyday scenes, convey the wealth of this 17th-century trading city and its interest in nature. Although the number of pieces was small, each piece stood out, making for a truly memorable experience, even after a short 30-minute visit. The quiet exhibition space felt like a time to reset my tired body and mind.
🛍 What to do after the exhibition
After leaving the exhibition, I checked out postcards and miniature art goods in the shop in the basement. There was also a small library available in English and other languages, where I was able to deepen my travel memories by browsing art-related booklets and iPads.
