Stayed in the right place on the first day in Baoshan Baoshan is a city our whole family really likes, and we also loved the homestay we stayed at this time. As soon as we entered, the room looked very exquisite, and the decor clearly showed a strong sense of design. The room isn’t super big, but it has everything you need: a small kitchen, a small balcony, a small sofa, and even a projector, perfect for our whole family trip~ You can check in contactlessly and self-service, which is very convenient, and there’s parking right downstairs. Lushi Ancient Town is known as the first town on the Western Yunnan Tea Horse Road, with a history of over 600 years. To the north, it connects Weishan, Xiaguan, Dali, and Lijiang, leading to Tibet; to the south, it links Fengqing, Lincang, and Zhenkang, heading towards Myanmar; to the west, via Baoshan and Tengchong, it can reach India. The famous traveler Xu Xiake once visited here and recorded the town’s prosperous scenes. To this day, the ancient town still maintains its original layout. The "Three Lanes and Seven Alleys" and a central square gradually formed through the continuous trade of horse caravans. The horse hoof marks on the bluestone slabs are traces left by the jingling horse bells. The residences and shops in the town reflect the characteristics of a gathering place for merchants and a fusion of cultures. The quadrangle courtyards resemble northern Chinese dwellings, the triple courtyards are inspired by Jiangsu and Zhejiang styles, and the architecture combines Dali Bai ethnic style with Nanzhao features, making it the best-preserved and largest ancient architectural complex in western Yunnan. The preservation of the ancient town benefits from the separation between the new town and the old town. The ancient town is built along the mountain, while the new town is located on the upper slope above it, equipped with complete roads, transportation, public facilities, and commercial services, including hotels and restaurants. Visitors to Lushi can stay in the new town. When touring the ancient town, you can search the map for "Tea Horse Road Lushi Section." There is a cultural protection unit marker here, which is also a great spot to view the entire town. Descend the steps into the ancient town, where you can see horse hoof marks on the stone steps. If the doors of the residences on both sides are open, you can enter to visit and take photos, but please do not disturb the residents. When you reach the main street, turn left and not far ahead is the Sifang Street Square, the town’s center, where the ancient theater stage and the Patrol Inspector’s Office are located. Continuing west along the main street, on the hillside at the western edge of the town, there is a Yunda Academy. The academy was built by Yunnan University and complements the cultural beauty of the ancient town. From the academy’s study tower, you can see a panoramic view of the town, which is especially beautiful at sunset. The ancient town is not yet commercialized, partly due to poor road conditions and inconvenient external transportation. On the other hand, it has maintained a certain degree of natural authenticity. The villagers we met were very simple and friendly, willing to chat and interact with the few visitors like us. On March 27, 2026, we admired this secret place where "the city is in the fields, and the fields are in the city." Stepping into the core scenic area—Chayun Park, we felt its design concept blending Jiangnan style with pastoral atmosphere. The pavilions and towers are arranged in a pleasing manner, with the white walls and black tiles of Huizhou-style architecture complementing the lush tea trees, creating a quaint and elegant scene. Wandering inside, the tea culture sculptures quietly tell the long history of Changning tea, from the giant gaiwan tea set (photo 20) to the vivid traditional tea brewing method (photo 4), immersing us in the profound tea culture of Changning. The soul of the scenic area—on Jingming Lake, the Shuangying Bridge spans the water. The reflections of the bridge and water overlap. Walking on the bridge, we see the clear lake water and admire the lush tea trees... The ancient Youdian River flows slowly, its water clear to the bottom, reflecting the blue sky, white clouds, green trees, and vines. A gentle breeze stirs ripples on the water surface... The scenic area, integrated with Changning County town, is lush with greenery and fragrant flowers. The air carries the scent of soil and fresh grass. Taking a deep breath, it is full of natural sweetness, washing away travel fatigue and bringing joy to our body and mind!

As a free-spirited Jiangsu native, one of the province's thirteen most competitive culinary spheres is already incredibly diverse. Yet, last year I dedicated all my travel planning energy to Yunnan, a thousand miles away. From Kunming to Dali, Baoshan, Tengchong to Mangshi and Ruili, Pu'er to Xishuangbanna, I meticulously planned every city's food and travel itinerary, wholeheartedly exploring every aspect of eating, drinking, and entertainment. I even fell in love with local delicacies like roasted milk fan and vinegared rice noodles. More than half of my gatherings with friends and family were at Yunnan-style restaurants, a truly delightful experience. This spring, the Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts partnered with Hong0871 to select Yunnan cuisine, with the first stop at the Shang Palace Chinese Restaurant in Yangzhou. This meal perfectly exemplified what soft power truly means. The pre-meal appetizer, the "Butter Double-Petal Rose Flower Pastry," was simply divine from the first bite. The pastry was moist and fluffy, the petals thick and fragrant, completely overturning all my preconceived notions of Yunnan flower pastries. I immediately captured the joy the people of Yunnan experience when enjoying flowers. The first two appetizers were both ingeniously presented. The Nuodeng ham and milk fan stir-fried with Dali sunflower petals, after being mixed, offered layers of flavor with macadamia nut sauce, ham, milk fan, and sunflower petals. The perilla flower and sea urchin crystal pork jelly broke with convention, combining Yunnan sweet bamboo shoots, snow crab meat, sea urchin, and vinegar grains in one dish, enhancing both its appearance and flavor. The arrival of the warm soup created the first climax. The three-year-old lily bulb and geoduck soup was prepared on the spot with hot broth, with the chef urging us to "stop taking pictures and drink it while it's hot!" The geoduck flower truly lived up to its reputation as a top-quality wild vegetable, sweet and nourishing. Following this, a series of hot wok-fried dishes arrived: ginger flower and ginger oil-braised pigeon, yellow fish maw and braised pork belly, herb-wrapped roasted squid with bamboo charcoal, daylily and hibiscus pomfret, and dogtooth bream and toon spring rolls. While the Yangtze River Delta region is brimming with spring delicacies in March and April, immersed in lush greenery, Shangri-La takes a different approach, allowing us, with our insatiable appetites, to savor Yunnan's fresh flowers and divine cooking methods without traveling far. There's a term circulating online now: "Spiritual Yunnanese." When everyone is crowding into the city center, choosing to stay on the periphery allows for a sense of vastness and openness. This meal perfectly captures that "Yunnan drifter" spirit. 🌸

On the way from Tengchong to Baoshan, we visited the Songshan Anti-Japanese War Site and Huitong Bridge in Longling. About half an hour after leaving Tengchong, at the Longjiang Bridge rest area on the Baoteng Expressway, you can view the Longjiang Bridge spanning the Longjiang Grand Canyon. The viewing platform has a check-in spot, which is very user-friendly. Many people are unaware of the Songshan Anti-Japanese War, but the TV series "My Regiment Commander, My Regiment" has drawn many viewers' attention to this piece of history. I visited here during my 2018 self-driving tour in Yunnan (2018 Yunnan self-driving tour notes available), and this time I brought companions to pay respects. The Songshan scenic area now attracts more visitors, and the infrastructure has been enhanced. The newly built visitor center and parking lot are nearly completed. In the future, you won’t be able to drive directly up; scenic area shuttle buses will be mandatory, though it’s unclear if there will be a fee. After all, many red education bases offer free entry but charge for shuttle buses, a model increasingly replicated in recent years. During the 2018 Yunnan self-driving tour, the main focus was the Burma Road. At that time, I didn’t know much and was unaware that Huitong Bridge is right at the foot of Songshan. In fact, if you travel another 10 kilometers before ascending the mountain along the Nujiang River, you can see Huitong Bridge, which was quite a regret. This time, when descending to Huitong Bridge following navigation, I found it was not the same route used in 2018 to ascend the mountain (the route on the map might be Z001). That route is the original Burma Road surface, a bumpy dirt and gravel road. This time, we traveled on paved roads, though some village roads were narrow but very scenic. The mountains, terraced fields, orchards, crops, valleys, and the Nujiang River truly make a picturesque landscape. There is a parking space right by the roadside at Huitong Bridge. Note the place name here: “Lamong Town, Hongsong Section, Huitong Bridge Site.” If you navigate directly to “Huitong Bridge,” it shows the opposite side of the river, which is inaccessible. The navigation might even point to the upper reaches of the Nujiang River hundreds of kilometers away. Huitong Bridge bore the heavy transport burden of the Burma Road. Its destruction halted the Japanese army’s advance into Yunnan, buying time and space for the war effort. Rebuilding it was part of the counterattack during the war. Today, it stands like a monument spanning the Nujiang River, reminding us not to forget history. Though the mountains and waters are distant, they are still our homeland. There is no direct expressway from Huitong Bridge to Baoshan. County Road M33 runs through the Nujiang Gorge and Gaoligong Mountains. After more than an hour, in Shuichang Township, Shidian County, you will pass the “Burma Road 707 Memorial.” You can stop and check in there before getting back on the expressway to Baoshan. Baoshan City is a blend of old and new, with few ancient relics remaining. We visited the Baoshan Museum and then checked in at Taibaoshan Forest Park, where there is a monument to the fallen anti-Japanese soldiers of western Yunnan. Afterwards, we headed to Qinglong Ancient Street in the northern suburbs of Baoshan. Baoshan’s history is closely tied to its location on the ancient western Yunnan route. Whether it was the ancient “Shu-Shendu Road,” the later “Tea Horse Road,” or the “Burma Road,” Baoshan has always been an important node and post station. Qinglong Street is the best-preserved area reflecting the ancient road’s style in Baoshan. Now a tourist commercial pedestrian street, it attracts many visitors. The street offers common tourist goods as well as Yunnan and Baoshan specialties. Yunzi Go stones originate from Baoshan, well known among Go enthusiasts.
