Puglia forms the heel of the boot of Italy. It’s famous for the town of Alberobello and the trulli houses, but the coast line with its ancient cities is just as beautiful with stunning views, architecture and food! If you have a few days, you can of course do both. For a day to Alberobello and Locorotondo, you can take the bus from Bari, but you need to plan, as the buses only go a couple of times a day, so you need to ensure you don’t miss the last bus back. For a day visiting the coastal cities, from Bari, you can take the train along the coast to Monopoli and Polignano a Mare (the birthplace of the singer Domenico Modugno, famous for the song Nel Blu, Dipinto di Blu). As the home of burrata and the pasta shape orechiette, as well as famous wines such as primitivo and Negroamaro, this region is a feast for food and wine lovers. January is a great time to go when it’s a bit quieter, but still much warmer than more northern cities or countries. #europetrip Bari often gets overlooked as just a transit hub, but diving into Bari Vecchia (the Old Town) was one of the best decisions of our trip. It is a chaotic, charming labyrinth where you can still see the famous "pasta ladies" hand-rolling fresh orecchiette right on the street tables. The smell of clean laundry hanging from balconies mixed with the salty sea breeze creates an atmosphere that feels completely untouched by time. The absolute highlight, however, was the street food. You cannot visit Bari without eating a Panzerotto. We grabbed one from a popular spot (Mastro Ciccio)—it’s essentially a deep-fried dough pocket filled with tomato and mozzarella. Pro tip: Be incredibly careful when you take the first bite! The filling is like molten lava and will burn you if you aren't patient. After the snack, we walked it off along the Lungomare, the longest seafront promenade in Italy.
