Laigu Glacier
Ranwu Lake
It’s not because you can’t afford to go to Iceland, but it’s more cost-effective to visit the ancient glacier.
In ancient Tibetan language, it means "hidden paradise" 😍🌈✨
Travel through the ancient glacier world in one second🌊❄
Wash away the dust of the world and purify the soul 🧘🏻♀💆🏻♂
This is not Iceland, nor the North Pole, but the Laigu Glacier located in 📍Tibet 🗻❄
Laigu Glacier, one of the three largest glaciers in the world 🌍❄
The glaciers surround Laigu Village🏠 so they are collectively called Laigu Glacier
The undulating blue ice🧊, the uncanny ice cave💎, and the crystal clear ice edges ❄🏔
Surrounded by blue ice and white snow❄, it feels like you are in an isolated paradise 😍🌨
You can’t help but feel the majesty of nature and the inner peace💕🌌
🚶♀About hiking
After getting off the bus, walk along the road for about ten minutes and you will see an iron sign🚏. From here on, you need to walk on a gravel road and climb uphill. It takes about 1⃣ hour to reach the lake. If you are in good physical condition, you can walk slowly along the lake. , the road conditions are still relatively good, except for being a little breathless, it’s not difficult to walk💪🌲⛰
🐎About horse riding
Off-season 1⃣0⃣0⃣, horse riding is recommended if you are not in good physical condition. Walking quickly saves effort💪But you will also be asked for the return time. After all, you have to earn money for the next trip. If you mind, you can walk slowly by yourself and enjoy the scenery while walking. 🐎🌿🏞

2⃣Recommended to eat in Ranwuzhen, a normal Sichuan restaurant 🍲🥢🍚
🏠Accommodation
1⃣Ranwuzhen is a nearby town accommodation, 33km away from Laigu.
2⃣If you want to be close to the glacier and enjoy the scenery, choose Songtsan🏨, but it’s too expensive.
3⃣There are some Tibetan B&Bs at the door. The conditions are very poor, so you have to stay there. 🏡😴

Tibet | Sharing of full trekking photos in the Laigu Glacier Scenic Area 2 - Inside the scenic area
🚗 Laigu Glacier is a group of glaciers located in Ranwu Town, Basu County, Changdu, Tibet, adjacent to Ranwu Lake, which is the source of Parlung Zangbo. The melted snow flows into Ranwu Lake, and there are dense primitive forests and many primitive Tibetan villages by the lake, including Meixi, Yalong, Ruoqiao, Dongga, Xiongjia and Niuma glaciers. Among these glaciers, Yalong Glacier is the most spectacular. The "Yalong Glacier" is 12 kilometers long, extending from the main peak of Gangri Gabu Mountain at an altitude of 6606 meters to Gangri Gabu Lake at an altitude of 4,000 meters. In terms of climate, it is located in the main channel for the Indian Ocean monsoon to transport cold air to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with sufficient precipitation, which is conducive to the development of glaciers and is a maritime glacier.
🚗 I came with a group this time, so I only walked the regular tourist route. Laigu Glacier is a group of glaciers, and I should have gone to one of them. Overall, I didn't feel it was difficult, and it's not like what the internet says about needing to ride a horse. I walked from the shuttle bus terminal to the innermost ice wall and back in an hour and a half with photos. The scenery is very good when the weather is good.
🚗 Some precautions
1. Be sure to pay attention to altitude sickness, you know your own body, there is no need to ride a horse but don't force it if your body can't handle it.
2. Be sure to pay attention to safety when going down, it is best to rent ice claws at the mouth of the glacier, after all, you are responsible for your own safety. 25y.
3. Currently, the big ice wall is not open. I went in today and walked straight in along the right side, no one stopped me so I thought it was open. There is some lake water near the ice wall that is not frozen. When I was about 20m away from the wall, someone shouted at me that it was dangerous and I couldn't go, so I hurried back.
4. If you live in Songzan or go to another glacier inside, you can drive in by yourself, you can ask in advance.
5. I don't know if all the glaciers in China are like this, there is no leader to play with. I have been to Alaska and Iceland and there are guides to walk the designated route all the way. Don't go to places without footprints on the glacier, pay attention to safety.
No Tibet, No Blue Ice | A trip to Tibet without the millennia-old blue ice is not perfect

📎It takes about 20 minutes to walk from the end of the sightseeing car to the foot of the glacier, or you can choose to ride a horse, which costs about 150r for a round trip
⚠️⚠️⚠️Tips:
1️⃣The Laigu Glacier changes every year, if you want to see the blue ice, you really need to hurry up
2️⃣If you want to see the blue ice🧊, the light is very important, generally around 11 am-2 pm, the light is the best

4️⃣The wind on the glacier is very strong, hats, sunglasses, gloves, sunscreen must be prepared

Blue Secret
Laigu Glacier is a general term for a group of glaciers, located in Ranwu Town, Basu County, Changdu, Tibet, adjacent to Ranwu Lake. Among the Laigu Glacier group, the Yalong Glacier is the most spectacular, extending from the main peak of Gangrigabu Mountain at an altitude of 6606 meters to Gangrigabu Lake at an altitude of 4,000 meters. Laigu Glacier is one of the three major glaciers in the world and the source of the Parlung Tsangpo.
🌟Highlights:
The blue ice cave is extremely shocking
👍Most recommended:
The blue ice cave has to go to the foot of the snow mountain at the end, it tests perseverance and persistence
🚉Travel strategy:
Navigate to the entrance of Laigu Glacier Scenic Area, the sightseeing car inside takes another 40 minutes, and then you need to walk or ride a horse to reach the first glacier, which takes about 40 minutes on foot. If you want to enter the innermost glacier to see the blue hole, you need to rent a car from the local villagers to go in. The road is very dangerous and it takes about 40 minutes to drive.
💰Average consumption:
The entrance ticket plus sightseeing car is 210 yuan, and there are discounts on general platforms.
The first glacier rides a horse for 100 per person.
The glacier inside rents a car for 300 per person. Although it is expensive, it is worth it

At Laigu Glacier, I saw blue ice for the first time
|||. The first sight of the blue glacier was really shocking!! The unadorned blue is really cool, and from the expressway into the scenic area, you can see a long blue ice wall from a distance, which is very explosive!! Laigu Glacier is a maritime glacier, so it only exists in winter. I came here a few years ago in summer, and it was just a puddle of muddy water. So if you want to see the glacier, you must come from December to March of the following year, and you will see it more completely. The weather is also very important. It's not so good to look at when it's snowing and cloudy. Under the reflection of the sunny day, the glacier will be bluer!! The original picture is directly out without any filters✌
Next is the precautions‼️We only went to the Blue Ice Lake, and heard from the hotel guide that this is the best one, and we didn't go to the other smaller and farther ones.
1️⃣ If you only look at the glacier, you need to buy a ticket to enter the scenic area and take the scenic area electric car. If you stay in the Songzan Hotel in the scenic area, you don't need to buy an extra ticket. The hotel is only a 5-minute walk from the glacier drop-off point. The glacier is deep inside and needs to be entered on foot or by horse. There is an extra charge for going to the other glaciers.
2️⃣Remember to buy ice claws in advance, the ice surface is really slippery, and it is easy to fall.
3️⃣Wear more clothes, wear hats and sunglasses, otherwise it will be very dazzling.
4️⃣If you are afraid of cold feet, remember to stick warm foot stickers, I am the one whose feet are frozen and numb😅

Today, Mason recommends the third place
[100 Places You Should Never Visit] - Laigu Glacier, Changdu, Tibet
📍Location: Laigu Village, Baxoi County, Changdu, Tibet
➡️Non-recommended guide:
1⃣It is recommended to come in the morning or at noon when the sun is shining. The blue ice 🧊 under the sun is as clear as a diamond. In the afternoon, the wind will be strong, and it may snow. If you are not afraid of the cold, you can stay until the afternoon.
2⃣Be sure to bring crampons. They are also available for rent in the scenic area, or you can bring your own. After getting off the sightseeing bus in the scenic area, there are villagers offering horseback riding, and the hiking distance is also very short, about 10 minutes.
3⃣The most beautiful and dangerous place in the scenic area is the blue ice cave. The ice at the entrance of the cave has already started to melt, so be sure to pay attention to safety. It is recommended to bring a drone like me to fly into the ice cave and shoot outwards.

Laigu Glacier on the 318 Sichuan-Tibet Highway.
🍁Laigu Glacier is one of the world's three largest glaciers. When you see the pure glacier, it feels like you're at the end of the world. Time seems to stop, and you can't help but hold your breath.
🍁Imagine a place where streams converge, lakes surge, snowflakes drift, and freeze into ice. The ice crystallizes, covers, piles up, and collides, and the days and nights pass by unnoticed. Finally, after a long time, it appears before your eyes.
🍁You must visit Laigu Glacier in Tibet at least once in your life to experience its stunning and healing blue.
318 Sichuan-Tibet Highway, Baxoi, Anjula Mountain, 4,468 meters above sea level.
🍁Anjula Mountain is located in the majestic Boshula Ridge Mountains. Although it is 4,468 meters above sea level, it welcomes every traveler with a friendly attitude. Unlike those intimidating peaks, the pass here is surprisingly gentle, as if nature has deliberately paved a soft heavenly road to guide you slowly into the clouds.
🍁Driving slowly up the pass, the journey over Anjula Mountain is a bit difficult, with gentle slopes along the way, black ice on the road, and one truck after another, but when you stand on the top of the mountain, a clear and quiet alpine lake comes into view.
🍁After passing the Anjula Mountain Pass, you will pass Ranwu Lake (Ranwu Lake is divided into Upper Ranwu, Middle Ranwu, and Lower Ranwu). At this time, the weather suddenly becomes less lovely, so you decide not to get out of the car and go directly to Laigu Glacier. Along the way, you can see Ranwu Lake from the car. Although the color of the lake water is different in different seasons, the natural environment surrounded by mountains is still sparkling in the sunlight, showing another kind of beauty!
🍁After leaving Ranwu Lake, you will drive along the Palong Zangbo River. As you approach Bomi, the vegetation begins to flourish, and the lush tree-lined road is worthy of being called the most beautiful county in China.
72 Bends of the Nujiang River on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway (G318).
🍁 We drove from Rumei Town in Mangkang County to Baxoi County, passing through Zogang County, the most difficult section of the road, and the highest point of the Dongda Mountain Pass. The points we passed in order were:
📍 Bangda Town: At an altitude of 4,444 meters, it is a must-see on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, and its residents are mainly Tibetans.
📍 Yela Mountain Pass: At an altitude of 4,658 meters, it is also known as "Nujiang Mountain" because of the winding river valley of the Nujiang River that runs through it. Standing on the viewing platform of the Yela Mountain Pass, you can clearly see the Bangda Grassland on one side and the Nujiang River Valley on the other. From here, you can descend to the famous dangerous pass on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway (G318), the "72 Bends of the Nujiang River."
📍 Check in at the 72 Bends of the Heavenly Road: The 72 Bends of the Nujiang River are also known as the 72 Bends of the Heavenly Road. You can see the steep and sharp elbow bends, one after another, embedded in the mountain, which is a miracle of Chinese highways.
📍 Nujiang Bridge: The Nujiang Bridge is located in Baxoi County and is part of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway (G318) and a major thoroughfare. The heroic deeds of the construction of the Nujiang Bridge moved everyone. Before reaching the bridge, we started honking our horns, and many drivers carefully parked on the side of the road.
🍁 A day's hard work is worth it because the scenery along the way is something we can't see again and again. Tonight, we stayed in Baxoi.

A must-stay! I declare it the most beautiful hotel in China.
I think Songtsam is the best hotel brand in China, and Songtsam Laigu Lodge, the highest altitude among them, has the most magnificent view!
Although the altitude is over 4,200 meters, the hotel is fully oxygenated, and the interior offers a panoramic view of the snow-capped mountains and glaciers, making it comfortable and cozy.
I took a Land Rover from Songtsam to Laigu from Bomi. This section of National Highway 318 is full of National Geographic-level scenery.
Having been to more than 30 countries, including Iceland, Africa, and South America, the grandeur of the Tibetan region still leaves me speechless.
Far from the hustle and bustle, the beauty speaks for itself. A must-stay!

Sichuan-Tibet Highway - "Nujiang 72 Turns"
Chamdo, Tibet
September 22, 2024
The weather in Basu is cloudy, with a temperature of 7-19 degrees. The highest altitude today is 4658 meters, National Highway 318.
"Nujiang 72 Turns" (Figure 1) is a famous mountain road between Basu County and Bangda Town on National Highway 318, crossing the Nujiang River, with steep slopes and dangerous roads, about 12 kilometers long. From the lowest point of 3100 meters above sea level, it climbs all the way to the highest point of Yela Mountain Pass at 4658 meters above sea level, and then spirals down to 4100 meters above sea level, with a drop of nearly 1500 meters. A section of the cliff-hanging road intuitively presents what is a sky road (Figure 2). There is a naturally formed "Tianmen Cave" at Yela Mountain Pass (Figure 3).
The road builders are considerate and set up a viewing platform (Figure 4) above the "Nujiang 72 Turns". Under the national flag, there is still that familiar inspirational saying (Figure 5). From here, you can overlook the beautiful curves of the "Nujiang 72 Turns" carved between the mountains and rivers (Figure 6).
It is said that the country has begun to build tunnels and pave roads here, and it is expected that the "Nujiang 72 Turns" will become a permanent memory of people from afar in the near future (Figure 7).
National Highway 318 is not only a scenic road, but also the main road of Sichuan-Tibet, with many types of vehicles, among which the westward traffic flow is much higher than the eastward traffic flow; it is also a pilgrimage road, and you can see male and female believers walking on this road every day. , Some even kowtow all the way. They have different starting points, but they all go west with the same goal. Looking at their tired figures and persistent steps, we can't bear to disturb, and silently bless them all the way.
This morning, I set off from Ranwu Town at 8:15 and headed to Zogang County along National Highway 318. On the way, I encountered a road repair and staggered traffic at 3700 kilometers, which was blocked for half an hour; the first section of the Nujiang 72 Turns was blocked for an hour and a half due to the breakdown of a long truck (Figures 8-9); there are about 30 kilometers before and after Zogang County. It is under repair, closed at night and open during the day. The distance of 287 kilometers, including rest and sightseeing, took a full 10 hours. Every car that has passed this dusty and muddy road looks very "vicissitudes of life".
Stay in Zogang County tonight (altitude 3810 meters), and will bid farewell to Tibet and return to Sichuan via Mangkang tomorrow, planning to arrive in Batang.

The largest glacier group in China - Laigu Glacier
Qamdo, Tibet
2024.9.21
Baxu is cloudy to sunny, with a temperature of 12-24 degrees. Today's highest altitude is 4400 meters, National Highway 318-National Highway 559.
Yesterday's weather forecast said it would rain all day today, so I was ready to give up visiting Laigu Glacier and make other plans. This morning, I read the forecast again. The light rain was delayed until after noon. Seeing that the weather was relatively stable, I decided to go to Laigu Glacier Scenic Area immediately.
Laigu Glacier is a collective term for a group of glaciers, known as "China's largest glacier" (Figure 1). It is located in Ranwu Town, Baxu County, Qamdo City. The glacier extends from the main peak of Gangrigarbu Mountain, which is 6606 meters above sea level, to an altitude of about 4000 meters. In terms of climate, it is located in the main channel of the Indian Ocean monsoon to transport cold air to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with abundant rainfall, which is conducive to the development of glaciers, belonging to the marine glacier.
As a friend left a message in the circle of friends: In China, there are not many places where you can see glaciers all year round, and the charming Tibet should contribute more than half of them. Indeed, low-altitude glaciers are mainly in Bomi and Baxu.
There are currently three glaciers open in Laigu Scenic Area, namely Meixi Glacier, Ruijiao Glacier and Yalong Glacier. I didn't find any comparison of the characteristics of these three glaciers online, and I didn't ask any fellow travelers. It's like drawing lots to choose "Ruijiao Glacier" to visit (afterwards, I learned that there is not much difference in the way to enter, price, and view of the three glaciers). Let's take "Ruijiao Glacier" as an introduction for friends' reference.
Overall feeling: The original ecological landscape is like an adventure; "Thousands of hardships and dangers", not suitable for everyone; First time on a glacier, see the "Blue Ice Cave", no regrets in this life.
We arrived at the scenic area at 8:30 am, bought tickets and changed to a scenic bus. We drove for nearly half an hour to reach Laigu Village. Then we paid for another car and changed to a villager's four-wheel drive off-road vehicle. We bumped for nearly 50 minutes on the countless sharp turns, steep slopes, and muddy roads beside the cliffs. We came to the glacier. Self-driving four-wheel drive off-road vehicles can enter, but they are rarely seen, because the road conditions are unfamiliar and the difficulty is too high.
That's not all, to get down to the glacier, there is no road, there is a slope, you have to go through a nearly 400-meter pile of rocks, weak or physically unstable people are very easy to sprain their feet or fall.
It is very necessary to rent a pair of "ice claws" to walk on the glacier. The surface of the glacier is not flat, due to the erosion of meltwater, it is in the form of ditches and banks, and horizontal passage requires large strides or jumps (Figure 2).
The weather in the mountains is changeable. At first, there was a little drizzle. Maybe it was infected by our persistence, the weather gradually changed from cloudy to sunny, the sun was shining, and the snow-capped mountains and glaciers were holy and handsome, majestic and spectacular (Figure 3).
There was no sound around, only the sound of "click, click" of the "ice claws" on the glacier pushed us forward. There are natural "ice sculpture works" of various shapes on the glacier (Figures 4-5).
Following the small flags inserted on the glacier, we walked for nearly 3 kilometers. At the end of one side of the glacier, we saw the "Blue Ice Cave".
The ice cave is naturally formed. At this latitude and altitude, after a whole summer, there is still such a wonderful landscape, which is amazing (Figure 6). Bend down and walk into the cave, the top of the cave is like a tunnel arch, with meltwater dripping down from above, and the inside of the cave is unfathomable (Figure 7). The ice cave is light blue under the sunlight, crystal clear, unforgettable (Figure 8).
It was already noon when we returned from the "Blue Ice Cave". After another difficult trek, bumpy ride, and dangerous situation, we finally returned to the parking lot at the entrance of the scenic area at 3 pm. We stayed in the scenic area for six and a half hours. On the way, the lake surface was like a mirror, and the mountains were like screens (Figure 9).
Finally, I would like to remind you with a common phrase: Laigu is risky, and you need to be cautious when entering the park.
Today is more tiring, did not go out as planned, just stayed in the hotel where I stayed last night, and plan to go to Zogong tomorrow.
Yalong Glacier | Stunning blue ice cave, it's really beautiful.
🗻Yalong Glacier is famous for its huge scale and spectacular scenery. Its unique S-shaped black and white stripes make the glacier majestic and magnificent.
💎Glacier type: Yalong Glacier is a marine glacier. This type of glacier has a strong effect on shaping the landform, so Yalong Glacier is not "ice clear and jade clean", but has unique landform features.
☃️Glacier age: Yalong Glacier has a history of about 1.5 million years and is an important witness to the evolution of glaciers on earth.
❄️Blue ice surface: Under certain conditions, the ice surface of Yalong Glacier will show a charming blue color. This is due to the scattering and reflection of light by the ice crystal structure inside the glacier, forming a unique blue ice landscape.
🕙Opening hours:
Open in winter, you can go up to the ice surface from mid-January to early March

Chamdo - Laigu Glacier
The best time to visit Laigu Glacier and ticket information is as follows:
1. Best time to visit:
- Mid-December to March: This is the best time to visit Laigu Glacier. The weather is cold, the snow on the glacier is spectacular, and the lake is frozen. You can walk on the lake and touch the blue ice, and enjoy the purest glacier landscape and beautiful blue ice. Moreover, the weather is good every day during this period, which is very suitable for taking photos and playing. The prices of accommodation and air tickets are relatively cheap from December to January, there are fewer tourists during the Spring Festival in February, and you can also enjoy the peach blossoms in Bomi in March, which is a different view.
- Other seasons: After March, the ice lake begins to melt, and the ice on the edge of the glacier will gradually decrease, and the scenery is not as spectacular as in winter. By May, the ice on the lake has basically melted into blue lake water. Although the scenery of Ranwu Lake is also good, it is impossible to appreciate the shocking beauty of the glacier up close.
2. Ticket information:
- The ticket price for Laigu Glacier plus sightseeing car is CNY 210.
- For preferential policies, children with a height of 1.2 meters (inclusive) or less, and elderly people aged 70 (inclusive) or above can enjoy free admission with a valid ID; active military personnel, retired military cadres, disabled persons, doctors, etc. can enjoy half-price tickets with relevant certificates. The specific preferential information is subject to the announcement of the scenic spot on the day.
