🏝️ Begur, Costa Brava’s Hidden Gem — A Glassy Blue Summer Escape near Barcelona
#summervacay
If you’re a sea lover spending your summer in Spain, Begur is the dreamy coastal town you must check out. Tucked along the Costa Brava coastline in the Girona province, this postcard-perfect destination is just over an hour’s drive from Barcelona — ideal for a quick seaside escape. And yes, it’s the real-life filming location of The Big Blue — cinema fans, take note!
💙 What makes Begur unforgettable?
Picture crystal-clear “glass sea” waters, soft golden sands, and that soul-calming Mediterranean breeze. Here, time slows down. Whether you’re watching the sunset with a camera in hand or letting the salt air kiss your skin, Begur is all about surrendering to the moment.
🫧 Top Experiences:
1. Sunset Magic – The coastal views at golden hour are cinematic. Bring your camera and let the colors wash your worries away.
2. Snorkeling & Diving – Beneath the surface, Begur reveals another world. Vibrant reefs and marine life make it perfect for snorkeling. Local dive schools offer guided experiences.
3. Seafood Heaven – Indulge in fresh Catalan dishes: seafood paella, bacalao salad, grilled squid… every bite tastes of the sea.
4. Hidden Coves & Beaches – Calas (small coves) like Aiguablava and Sa Tuna are pure paradise. Clear, calm waters—ideal for a relaxing swim or just floating under the sun.
5. Scenic Hikes – Take the coastal trails hugging the cliffside for breathtaking views of blue horizons and rocky shores.
6. Begur Castle Viewpoint – Hike up to the Castell de Begur for sweeping views over the coast and terracotta-roofed town below.
✨ Tip: Summer is peak season, so go early or stay overnight in one of the charming local guesthouses for a full sensory experience.
Begur isn’t just a beach town — it’s a feeling. One of salty breeze, barefoot walks, and that moment you realize: you never want to leave.

The castle tower is the best observation deck.
Mediterranean Coast Tour of Spain ~ Girona (Region)
The castle itself is a small ruin of what remains, but it is still a great place to visit and learn about its history. There is a small path leading up to it, though some parts are quite steep. In my opinion, the last 30 feet or so are too steep for those who are frail or use wheelchairs. However, once you reach the top, the view is absolutely spectacular. The scenery of the town of Begur and its surrounding areas is stunning. So, relax and enjoy the view. It’s not crowded, or at least it wasn’t crowded when we visited, as it was a weekday.

Many of Nabob's houses are stately residences in colonial style.
Mediterranean Coast Tour in Spain ~ Girona (Region)
On the southern coast of the Baix Empordà, we find the town of Begur. In this area of the Costa Brava (Girona coast), the mountains plunge into the Mediterranean Sea, creating small bays and sandy beaches between the rocky cliffs.
Pine forests stretch all the way to the coast, surrounding the town of Begur, which is just a few kilometers from the sea. This historic quarter is a very traditional and colorful place, dominated by the ruins of a simple castle built on the rocks, which dates back to the 15th century. You can still admire the old walls and five defense towers built between the 16th and 17th centuries. The use of stone is a characteristic of the popular architecture in the area. The old fishing area by the beach has become an important residential and tourist area. These include Aiguablava, where there is a great Parador de Turismo and a small marina, and Sa Tuna beach, located between the sea and the mountains.

Beautiful Begur
#celebrateit
Begur is such a paradise. This charming village is all about narrow and cobbled streets with gorgeous views from the castle. The vibe is super relaxed and is perfect to unwind by the beaches with a cocktail drink by the sea or exploring its cute shops and restaurants. It’s a great spot for those who want to enjoy the beauty of Costa Brava without the crowds. This is the best place to celebrate your weekend.
