Summer Lovin’
Integrating a number of traditional halls and pavilions, the Summer Palace is an imperial garden and beautiful sight to behold in Beijing. We visited right after the Golden Week holiday in China (mid-October) and we’re blessed with blue skies and sunshine!⠀
⠀
First built in 1750, and restored in 1886, the natural landscape of hills and water against the pavilions made a serene sight that we couldn’t help but sit and admire.⠀
I would recommend setting aside an entire afternoon, on a day with good weather, to visit the Summer Palace as it takes quite some time to stroll around the entire area.

Michaela (@uncoveringcities) Imperial Architecture in Beijing
The largest and most representative existing masterpieces amongst China’s ancient sacrificial buildings, and we were lucky enough to see it up close. This beauty in particular is the Altar of Prayer for Good Harvests and is intricately designed with blue and green colors popping out vibrantly under the sun - the earliest building in the Temple of Heaven complex.
The complex makes for a great place to visit no matter that time of year; I’ve been in both winter and autumn, but have heard spring and summer are great seasons too. Top tip though, from experience, winter seems to be the quieter season for visitors!

Michaela (@uncoveringcities) Autumnal Hikes on the Great Wall
The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall of China is one of my favourites to visit for its ease and convenience.
Located 73km away from Beijing’s downtown area, we hired a driver to take us there and back for around 500 RMB.
Along this section of the wall, there are 22 watch towers along the 2,250 meter stretch of wall, and it is a very well preserved section following its rebuilding 1569.
This section of the Great Wall is surrounded by nature too. So it makes for a beautiful trip no matter the season! In Autumn, the weather is perfect for a leisurely stroll along the wall - especially when the sun makes an appearance, and all the autumnal colours you see on the trees and surrounding vegetation is just beautiful!
Plus, after your little hike, you can choose to slide down to the starting point in a single-rider toboggan! Super fun!
