Piazza Vecchia is literally the heart of the old town of Bergamo. The Bergamo official tourism website is right about it: just close your eyes and you will immediately feel the presence of history. I would say, it is like flipping the pages in the history book, and you get to travel from Ancient Rome to the present days. There are also many restaurants and cafes in the square amidst of the several buildings that are also located here, such as the Palazzo della Ragione (municipal building), Torre Civica (bell tower), Contarini Fountain, Palazzo Nuovo (previously the town hall but now a library) and others. From the old town of Bergamo, you can take a small cable car up to San Vigilio, where you can see the more beautiful scenery of Bergamo! Next to Piazza Cittadella in città alta, there is another small cable car station (Funicolare San Vigilio) that takes you to the higher San Vigilio. Alternatively, you can follow the signs and climb the 162 steps of Scaletta Scorlazzone to reach the destination. There are few tourists here and it is very quiet ~ the scenery is beautiful! It’s a great place to take landscape photos. There is a Castello S. Vigilio here, which is open to visitors. Bergamo was one of those places that made me wonder why I hadn’t visited sooner. The highlight is Città Alta, the historic upper city surrounded by Venetian walls. Take the funicular up and suddenly you’re walking through narrow stone streets, old squares and beautiful Italian architecture. But Bergamo isn’t a place I’d want to rush. I’d return for another slow walk through Città Alta, an espresso in Piazza Vecchia, sunset from the walls and, obviously, another round of Italian food. Its location is another reason to come back. Bergamo is often treated simply as an airport for trips to Milan, but the city deserves to be a destination itself. It has history, views, great food and a relaxed atmosphere without requiring a huge sightseeing itinerary.
