Crossness Pumping Station - London
One of the most unusual and underestimated attractions in London is the Crossness Pumping Station, from the outside it may seem like an ordinary, unremarkable building. The pumping station, built in an eclectic Victorian style, began operation after the events of the Great Stench in 1858. The pumping station opened in 1865 and was operational until the 1950s.
Crossness Pumping Station is considered a masterpiece of engineering and industrial architecture from the Victorian era: the vaulted ceiling in the main hall is supported by tall columns, and the staircases are decorated with ornate wrought-iron gratings. This richly decorated building houses four huge pumps named after themselves: the Prince Consort, Albert Edward, Victoria and Alexandra.
Address: SE2 9AQ, Abbey Wood, Bazalgette Way.
