You definitely need to plan in advance if you're using public transport. Double-check that the bus is running; we actually ended up walking because we arrived early, and it's quite a trek. Be aware that Google Maps directs you down a main road with no sidewalk! Unfortunately, our friends who were planning to join us couldn't make it in time and had to return to London. The staff are kind and welcoming, and the artwork is incredible, especially given the site's history—something that likely wouldn't be possible today. My experience might have been slightly dampened by the absence of my Australian friends, but I'm still happy I went. I got some great photos and even found some fun books on wee and poo for my 5-year-old granddaughter!

We hosted friends from Germany who were eager to view Crossness pumping station, so I called to arrange a visit on a steaming day. The volunteer I spoke with was extremely helpful in organizing it for us. On the day, despite the rain, we rode the small train to the site and shortly reached the main exhibition area. Witnessing the enormous beam engine (Prince Consort) in steam was truly remarkable. Contrary to my expectations, it operated quietly, with the huge beam swaying gently and its piston rods attached. The volunteer guides impress with their extensive knowledge of the operation and history of the four great beam engines in the pump hall, and the ornate ironwork is breathtaking. The exhibition honors the genius of Sir Joseph Bazelguette and his engineering solutions for the Great Stink of 1856. It offers an outstanding demonstration of how sewage was managed, which helped save stinky London from Cholera. This visitor attraction is top-notch, and I would highly recommend it.

This was a wonderful morning adventure. Truly educational, captivating, and scenic, staffed by incredibly helpful and delightful volunteers (or so it seems). I wish we constructed such stunning things today. We began the day at Abbey Wood station, taking an old Routemaster bus that the children adored, leading us straight to the mini railway that transported us to the site. There are several buildings with museum-like displays inside, and you can explore the engine room while it operates—wearing a hard hat! There's a fairly large café and activities tailored for children. Very impressive; I would have visited earlier if I'd realized how amazing it would be. Fantastic for school trips as well!
