One thing that needs a lot of planning when you do self driving road trips in Hokkaido is which route you should take and how much the ETC costs. Taking toll roads can be very expensive in Hokkaido and thus, if you choose to take many toll roads during your trip, it would more cost effective if you buy the HEP Hokkaido Expressway Pass instead. For us, during our 8 days self drive trip, I used ChatGPT’s help to calculate the tolls and surprisingly, as we didn’t take many toll roads and also that some toll roads take the same time you will need to take if you use general roads and thus, there is no need to take toll roads to save up the money for another sushi feast. The Biei tour was the part of my Sapporo trip I was most looking forward to, and it truly exceeded my expectations! The location is excellent, right next to Nijo Market, where you can enjoy a seafood meal before heading out each day. Restaurants: At Nijo Market, I chose Demekin でめきん (last three photos). The fish is incredibly fresh, and the fried oysters 🦪 are a must-try—juicy and bursting with flavor 😍. For soup curry, I went to King (second photo). People line up in the snow, so I recommend going early. The broth is delicious, and the portions of vegetables and meat are generous. I ordered the chicken and vegetable soup curry with minced meat and a soft-boiled egg, and it was incredibly satisfying 😍. Attractions: At Asahiyama Zoo, don't miss the penguin walk at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. The seals and leopards are adorable, with the leopards resembling black sesame seeds. I suggest heading to the penguin area first to watch the walk, then slowly making your way up to the exit for a smoother visit. The Blue Pond in Biei is mostly frozen and white in winter, so it doesn't look like the iconic blue pond. If it's not a must-see for you, consider skipping it to save time. However, the Shirahige Waterfall is genuinely beautiful. For the best photos, crouch down to shoulder height near the railing and have a friend hold the phone high to capture a stunning panoramic shot. Based on my two trips, here are the absolute must-haves 👇 1️⃣ Book in Advance! 📅 Sapporo's famous restaurants and Biei tours are almost impossible to book on the same day. Waiting in the cold = ruined trip… ❌ Making reservations before your trip will make everything much smoother. 2️⃣ Bring Plenty of Cash 💴 Markets and izakayas often only accept cash. If cards aren't accepted, you might have to walk away... A coin purse for yen is super handy. 3️⃣ Layered Winter Gear is a Must 🧣🔥 Instead of one thick coat, go for a combination of heat-tech layers and hand warmers. Without a scarf and gloves, you'll hit your limit while taking outdoor photos. 4️⃣ Ice Grippers + Waterproof Spray 🥾❄️ The slipperiness of snowy paths is beyond imagination. Without ice grippers, you're likely to slip, and waterproofing your boots is essential! Non-waterproof boots will be ruined in just one day. 5️⃣ Umbrella & Dual Voltage Hair Tools ☔💇♀️ Snow and hail are frequent, so an umbrella is a must! In early December in Hokkaido, the south and Sapporo don’t have thick snow yet. If you want to chase snow, you must go to the northern areas of Biei and Asahikawa! Here’s our itinerary. Since dinner is reserved at 5:30 pm, we started early! 6:29 am Depart from Sapporo 🚄: Take the JR (Lilac-Kamui Line): Platform 9, seats 5 and 6 are non-reserved 7:56 am Arrive at Asahikawa Station Asahikawa Station is huge and connected to the AEON shopping mall. Take advantage of the morning snow to visit Miyamae Park, which is right behind Asahikawa Station. 8:44 am Depart Asahikawa for Biei 🚄: Take the JR (Furano Line): Platform 1, all non-reserved seats 9:17 am Arrive at Biei From Biei to Shirahige Falls and Blue Pond, you can take bus routes 39 and 42, which take about 20 minutes. The bus stop is a 2-minute walk outside Biei Station: search for Biei Eki-mae (in front of the bank). Route 39’s final stop is Asahikawa, and route 42’s final stop is Biei. For friends planning to visit Biei and Asahikawa, it’s highly recommended to go early. It gets dark very early in Asahikawa, so the earlier you go, the better for photos. By the time you return, much of the snow will have melted. For independent travelers, definitely buy the Hokkaido JR Pass. It costs 22,000 yen for 5 days, which is super cost-effective and convenient. Pick up the pass at the airport JR station, then use it to enter and exit platforms. You only need to reserve seats for free on the JR official website. For non-reserved seats, booking is optional. For trains with all reserved seats, like the Hokuto, advance reservation is required!!!

Biei in Hokkaido is renowned for its picturesque rolling hills, earning it the nickname "Town of Hills." The vast countryside here is uniquely characterized by fields of various crops, creating a massive natural patchwork quilt of colors. While spring, summer, and autumn offer a vibrant feast of colors, winter in Biei reveals a completely different kind of serene and pure beauty. When the entire land is blanketed in snow, the undulating hills transform into waves of silver and white. Landmark trees that stand in the fields, such as the Seven Stars Tree and the Parent and Child Tree, appear even more solitary and resilient against the snowy backdrop. These minimalist yet striking winter silhouettes are classic scenes that photographers eagerly pursue. In addition to these iconic spots, the town center of Biei is also stunning and well worth a visit! It feels like a European village or a world straight out of a fairy tale. However, group tours typically do not stop in Biei's town center, so it's recommended to plan a self-guided trip and stay for at least 3 days and 2 nights. You are sure to fall in love with this place!

Make good use of the JR Pass to reach Biei. After exiting the station, walk straight across the road to the left side where you'll find the bus stop. Take the bus to the Blue Pond stop and step into a dreamy, beautiful world. The snow from two days ago was still piled up, allowing me to enjoy this stunning scenery. Then, return to the bus stop and take the bus to Shirahige Waterfall. The snow-capped mountain ranges were breathtakingly beautiful. My itinerary followed a slow-paced approach. On the way back, I strolled around the area near Asahikawa Station and even caught a glimpse of the beautiful Asahikawa Starbucks (unfortunately, the photos have been deleted). If I were to plan this trip again, I might opt for a one-day tour (though the sightseeing would be more rushed) or stay overnight in Asahikawa to leisurely explore Asahikawa, Biei, and Furano (including the Ningle Terrace).
