Although Abrams Falls is only 20 feet high, the large volume of water rushing over falls more than makes up for its lack of height. The long, deep pool at its base is very picturesque. The waterfall and creek are named for a Cherokee chief whose village once stood several miles downstream. The trail to the falls traverses pine-oak forest on the ridges and hemlock and rhododendron forest along the creek. The hike is 5 miles roundtrip and considered moderate in difficulty. We rented bikes and rode the 11-mile loop in total silence. Without the roar of engines, you can hear the birds, the wind in the grass, and the distant call of turkeys. It’s the best way to see the cove. We saw three bears and a dozens of deer. It’s a long ride with some steep hills, so consider an e-bike if you aren't an avid cyclist. Being in the center of the cove on a spring morning without a car in sight is pure bliss."

#springtravel The Roar of Abrams Falls "We hiked the 5-mile round trip to Abrams Falls in early May 2026. While it’s only 20 feet high, the sheer volume of water moving over the ledge in the spring is terrifying and beautiful. The 'plunge pool' at the bottom was a churning turquoise swirl. The trail winds through rhododendron tunnels that were just starting to show their first buds. In the spring, the humidity is low, making the hike very comfortable. We sat on the large boulders at the base and felt the mist cooling our faces. It’s the most powerful waterfall in the park, and in the spring, it truly earns its reputation."

#springtravel Bear Cubs in Cades Cove "Driving the Cades Cove loop at sunrise in May 2026 provided the highlight of our trip: a mother black bear with two tiny 'COYs' (cubs of the year). The cubs were about the size of large housecats and spent twenty minutes trying to climb a fallen oak tree. In the spring, the bears are active, foraging for calorie-rich squawroot and insects. The park rangers in 2026 are very strict about 'bear jams,' ensuring people stay at least 50 yards away. Watching them through binoculars in the soft morning light, surrounded by the greening pastures of the cove, felt like a scene from a nature documentary. They are the true soul of the Smokies."

Cade’s Cove is the most visited area of the Smoky Mountains. Roughly 31 miles away from the city of Pigeon Forge, Cade’s Cove is in the 6,800-acre valley known for its picturesque landscapes. European settlers settled here in the early 1800s, contributing to why Cade’s Cove has the largest variety of historic buildings in the entire national park. As you make your way through the area, you can see historic structures like restored churches, old grist mills and pioneer log cabins. The enriched history of Cade’s Cove has left its lasting mark with its presence still felt today. There are multiple small big trails one can take. There are many abundant places/cabins which were once residential area but now left unoccupied. Drive is beautiful and you can many bears on the way.
