🇸🇰 From fairytale castles to the great outdoors, a Slovakian tour
Slovakia is a lesser-known destination, but it's truly a hidden gem. I recommend a comprehensive rental car itinerary that explores everything from the toy-like cityscape to the fairytale-like castles and majestic mountain ranges that rival the Alps.
⏱️ Recommended Slovakia Itinerary
DAY 1: Bratislava City Center → Bojnice Castle
In the capital city of Bratislava, I first visited the square, white Bratislava Castle and St. Martin's Cathedral in the Old Town. The pastel-blue "Blue Church" was particularly charming and captivating, reminiscent of a fairytale toy house. In the afternoon, I headed inland to visit Bojnice Castle, a verdant forest intertwined with emerald-hued peaks. The romantic, Disney-like atmosphere made for a delightful experience.
DAY 2: Cicmani Village → Orava Castle
The next day, I headed to the unique, traditional village of Cicmani. The dark brown wooden houses were densely painted with white geometric patterns on their exterior walls, making the entire neighborhood feel like a giant open-air folk museum, a delightful stroll. In the afternoon, we headed to Orava Castle, perched precariously atop a steep cliff. Unlike the Wojnice Castle we'd seen the day before, this fortress boasts a rugged, imposing structure, impressing with its overwhelming scale.
DAY 3: High Tatra (Strupske Pleso) → Spiši Castle/Kosice
We headed toward High Tatra National Park, where you can experience the majestic nature of Slovakia. Strolling through the expansive landscape of Strupske Pleso Lake beneath the rugged rocky peaks, I felt all the fatigue from my trip melt away. To conclude the trip, I recommend Spiši Castle in the eastern region. Walking through the ruins of this massive castle, with its white stone walls stretching across a green hill, evokes a sense of loneliness and grandeur, a medieval atmosphere that lingers in your memory. The nearby city of Košice is a great base for this trip.
💡 Travel Tips for Crossing Slovakia
This route is a nationwide circuit, brimming with magnificent natural scenery and ancient castles. Public transportation alone can be quite time-consuming due to inconsistent service intervals and transfers, so renting a car is a much more efficient and leisurely way to explore every nook and cranny.
