It was dedicated to Saint John Marc, teh first to gather Byblos people around Christianity. Until today, the firstname John Marc is very common in Byblos and it's suburbs. Renovation works to the basilica took place until our days , however the biggest renovation project was undertaken by lebanese maronite priests during the 19th century ; works aimed by then at preserving the byzantine / romanesque sculpture of the church while taking care also of the exterior walls and surrounding gardens. In brief, a visit to Byblos/Jbeil must included a visit to Saint John Marc cathedral and it's gardens.

Stairs inside castle are very steep and not well lit so not suitable for less able visitors. Views from the top of the castle are fantastic across the whole historical site, up to Byblos town and along the coast towards Beirut. There are very basic toilets on site with a charge to the attendant. Fascinating historical site well worth a visit.

I stayed in Lebanon for 5 days. To be honest, it was not worth it. I visited 4 of the 5 world cultural heritage sites. It feels like UNESCO has not allocated any money and there is no maintenance at all. It is placed there in a mess. Why do you have the nerve to charge tickets? The one with better protection is the Temple of Baalbek, which costs $12. There is still a little way to go. But I can't get into the ruins on the opposite side.
