Spain Picos de Europa – Ruta del Cares, Caín to Poncebos Gorge Cliff PathS
#itinerarycheck Twelve km, one way, four hours, zero shade. The Ruta del Cares is the most over-photographed trail in northern Spain and still worth it. We started from Caín (León side) at 8 am — Caín start is gentler (initial downhill), Poncebos start hits 2 km uphill first. The path is blasted into the gorge wall: tunnels, a hanging bridge, constant Cares river 200 m below, vertical limestone on both sides.
Logistics: no public transport links the two ends conveniently, so either shuttle a car (we left one at Poncebos, taxi'd to Caín ~25 EUR) or walk back (8h total). No water sources en route — carry 2 L in summer, plus windbreaker; the gorge funnels gusts. Free trail, no permit. Toilets only at village ends.
What nobody tells you: the middle 6 km is flat and hypnotic, your legs forget they're walking, then the final approach to Poncebos drops in switchbacks and your knees remember. Mistake we made: starting at 10:30 in August — hit the return switchbacks at 2 pm, 34°C, no shade, hallucinating the parking. Best light is pre-10 am when the gorge is in shadow and the river glows green.
Itinerary check: sleep in Potes or Cangas de Onís, drive to Caín, hike to Poncebos, taxi or pre-positioned car back. Add Fuente Dé cable car next day if you want altitude contrast. Cares alone is a half-day, not a full Picos experience — pair it with a refuge night above Treviso or Sotres.

Step Into Spain’s Storybook Past at Castillo del Rey 🏰✨
Dreaming of living your best medieval fantasy? Say hola to Castillo del Rey (King's Castle)—a jaw-dropping fortress perched above the super-picturesque coastal town of San Vicente de la Barquera in Cantabria, northern Spain.
This ancient stronghold is the real deal: think thick stone walls, epic turrets, and sweeping ocean-and-mountain views that’ll leave your IG blowing up. Originally built in the 8th century (yep, THAT old!), it’s been upgraded over time, but still oozes total regal vibes.
Why visit? Besides channeling your inner king or queen, you can wander through the castle's cool exhibits, climb to the top for panoramic shots of the Picos de Europa mountains and sparkling Cantabrian Sea, and just soak up history. Bonus: this spot is right in town, so you’re just a short stroll from cute tapas bars and seafood joints serving the freshest catch.
Address: Castillo del Rey, Calle del Castillo, 14, 39540 San Vicente de la Barquera, Cantabria, Spain
Opening Hours: Usually Tuesday–Sunday, 10:30 am–2 pm and 4:30 pm–6:30 pm (Hours may vary—so check before you go!)
Tickets: Super affordable; you can grab them right at the entrance or score advance entry via trip.com!
Hot tip: Don’t forget your camera—the sunrise views here are next-level magical. Castillo del Rey is history, coastal charm, and fairytale dreams all wrapped up in one unforgettable stop!

Picos de Europa
✨ What it felt like:
I spent most of the day driving slowly between mountain villages and stopping whenever the scenery became impossible to ignore. The cool air, quiet valleys, and sound of cowbells in the distance made everything feel far away from busy city life.
👀 What stood out:
The contrast between steep rocky peaks and green pastures was beautiful everywhere. Small villages felt incredibly calm, with stone houses and tiny cafés surrounded by mountains. I also loved how quickly the weather changed — one moment full sunshine, the next covered in mist, which made the landscapes feel even more dramatic in photos.
💡 Exclusive tip:
Start your mountain drives early in the morning if possible. The roads are quieter, parking near viewpoints is easier, and the softer fog around the peaks creates the best atmosphere for photos.
❤️ Personal feeling:
Picos de Europa felt like the kind of place where slowing down happens naturally. I could easily imagine spending a few peaceful days there with family, enjoying simple meals after long scenic walks in the mountains.

Rock Star of the Picos, Urriellu Magic
#summervacay Urriellu, or Picu Urriellu if you wanna sound local, is an absolute legend in the Picos de Europa. It’s this towering chunk of limestone that just pops out of the mountains like it’s showing off. You see it from a distance and you’re like, “Yup, that’s the one.” It’s especially famous with climbers, but honestly, even just hiking near it is amazing.
The trek to the base is no joke but super doable if you’re into trails and don’t mind a bit of a climb. The route from the Sotres area or through Bulnes gives you epic scenery, rolling green hills, rocky paths, the occasional cow, classic Asturias energy. Once you reach the Refugio de Urriellu, it’s all about chilling, staring at the peak, and feeling tiny in the best way.
Even if you’re not summiting, just being near this rock feels special. There’s a real “you earned this” vibe at the top. Pack snacks, wear good shoes, and soak up the mountain silence.

Big Rock Energy at Naranjo de Bulnes
#summervacay If you’re into wild mountain vibes, Naranjo de Bulnes is gonna blow your mind. It’s this crazy limestone peak just casually standing tall in the middle of the Picos de Europa like it owns the place. The locals call it Picu Urriellu, and it’s kind of a big deal, especially if you’re into climbing. But even if you’re not, it’s still awesome to just *see* it.
Getting there is a bit of a mission, usually from the tiny village of Bulnes, which is already pretty remote and super cute. You can hike in or take the funicular (honestly depends on your mood and leg energy). The views are unreal, craggy peaks, open sky, and this big ol’ rock sticking out like nature’s skyscraper.
Totally peaceful, no cars, just nature doing its thing. Whether you hike all the way to the base or just admire it from afar with a bocadillo in hand, Naranjo de Bulnes is one of those places that stays with you.

[To the hidden region of Spain] An adventurous trip to encounter the great outdoors in Picos de Europa✨
The "Picos de Europa" in northern Spain is a mountainous region with spectacular views that rival the Alps🏞️
The steep rocky mountains, deep valleys, and clear lakes...all of it is untouched nature, making you feel as if you've wandered into a picture book world.
When I actually visited, the air was clear, and in the silence where only the sounds of birds and the wind echoed, I felt a healing that made my heart feel lighter. There are also many hiking trails, so it can be enjoyed by beginners and advanced hikers alike👟
It is about a 2-hour drive from Oviedo or Santander to get there. There are few public transportation options, so a rental car is recommended🚗
🎯 Tips for success: The popular "Calles Valley Route" is recommended for beginners! Water, snacks, and rainwear are essential. Even in summer, it gets cold in the mornings and evenings, so don't forget to take precautions against the cold 🧥
Perfect for solo travelers, couples, and anyone who wants to experience nature. If you want to see the "other side" of Spain, you can't miss the Picos de Europa ✨

Picos de Europa – Spain’s Wild Heart of Peaks and Valleys
#localguides
Tucked away in northern Spain across Asturias, Cantabria, and Castile-León, the Picos de Europa mountain range is a breathtaking natural escape—where jagged limestone peaks, deep gorges, glacial lakes, and alpine meadows create a rugged, awe-inspiring landscape.
As Spain’s first national park (established in 1918), Picos de Europa is a dream for hikers, climbers, and nature lovers. Trails range from peaceful forest walks to challenging high-altitude routes, like the Cares Gorge Trail (Ruta del Cares)—a cliffside path carved into the mountainside, offering some of the most thrilling views in Europe.
The park is also rich in wildlife, with chamois, golden eagles, and brown bears, and culturally vibrant, dotted with traditional mountain villages like Covadonga, where you'll find sacred shrines and the beautiful Lakes of Covadonga shimmering in the highlands.
With its perfect mix of natural drama, cultural depth, and outdoor adventure, Picos de Europa is a hidden gem that rivals the Alps—but with a uniquely Spanish soul.

Picos de Europa – Spain’s Untamed Mountain Heart
Tucked away in the northern regions of Asturias, Cantabria, and Castile and León, the Picos de Europa are a wild, dramatic mountain range that took me completely by surprise. Unlike the Pyrenees or the Alps, these peaks feel undiscovered, raw, and utterly majestic — nature on its own terms.
The first time I laid eyes on the limestone cliffs rising sharply against deep green valleys, I was speechless. Hiking here is not just scenic — it’s soul-stirring. Trails like the Ruta del Cares take you through deep gorges, across high bridges, and along cliffside paths that make you feel both tiny and incredibly alive. And yet, you don’t need to be a hardcore trekker to enjoy it — there are plenty of accessible viewpoints and cable cars, like the one at Fuente Dé, offering stunning panoramas.
What truly made the experience magical for me were the contrasts: alpine meadows one moment, glacial lakes the next, and then tiny stone villages like Sotres or Bulnes, where time seems to pause.
Best Time to Visit: Late spring to early autumn offers the best weather for hiking and views, though early summer brings wildflowers and fewer crowds.
Location Tip: Base yourself in Potes or Cangas de Onís for easy access to trails and charming local hospitality.
