Wow, Caerphilly Castle is absolutely incredible! Standing here, gazing at its massive walls and the surrounding moats, you really get a sense of its sheer scale. It's so much bigger than I imagined, a proper medieval powerhouse. Exploring the towers and the impressive gatehouses, you can almost hear the echoes of knights and battles. And that leaning tower – how has it stood for so long?! It's beautifully preserved and incredibly atmospheric. Where: Caerphilly, Wales UK When: July 2017 Wales is know for its historic castles and strongholds and while most are in ruins there is something magical about stepping on to the land where these majestic towers once stood. Some castles have more of the structures still standing than others but each still manages to tell a story of old (even if you have to use a little imagination to picture it). Caerphilly Castle still has a number of walls still standing, some showing the various levels and floors that stood 3-4 stories high. And there are still plenty of turrets and chambers you can climb around which is what we did one glorious afternoon in July 2017. This particular trip was made even more special by some visiting Welsh dragons Dewi & Dwynwen. At the time of our visit the Dragons were only in Caerphilly for a holiday but it appears that they have made the castle their personal lair. We very much enjoyed the tale of their love story on our visit and are glad to see they are still around. This is a perfect mix Fantasy and History and I can not wait to visit again. #gooutside

My Solo Itinerary: A Day in a Medieval Masterpiece 10:00 AM - Crossing the Moat, Conquering the Gate The first sight of Caerphilly Castle is breathtaking. Vast moats and leaning towers rise from the water. I entered over the impressive wooden drawbridge, feeling like I was stepping into a history book. I grabbed a guidebook and decided to just wander, letting curiosity be my guide. 11:00 AM - Towers, Halls & The Famous Lean I started by climbing the South-East Tower. The spiral staircases are narrow and steep, but the view from the top over the entire fortress and the town beyond is a worthy reward. Next, I explored the great hall and the state rooms, their fireplaces and windows hinting at past grandeur. Of course, no visit is complete without visiting the famous Leaning Tower. It leans more than the tower in Pisa! Standing beneath it is a dizzying, incredible sight. 1:00 PM - A Picnic with a View I’d packed a lunch, and the castle grounds are full of perfect spots. I found a quiet bench on the outer bailey, with the mighty walls as my backdrop. It was the perfect solo moment to refuel and soak in the atmosphere. 2:00 PM - A Walk on the Walls & Dam Feeling energetic, I walked the full circuit of the wall walls. This gives you a soldier’s-eye view of the defences. I then walked out across the dam that holds back the great lake, turning back for the definitive, picture-postcard view of the castle. It’s a perspective you simply can’t miss. Solo Traveler Tips I Learned: · Wear Sturdy Shoes: You'll be climbing towers and walking on uneven stone paths. Comfort is key. · Embrace Your Inner Child: Let your imagination go! Pretend you're defending the walls or storming the gatehouse. The scale of the place makes it easy. · Visit on a Weekday: For the most peaceful, crowd-free experience, a weekday visit is ideal. · Stay for the Day: This isn't a quick stop. Give yourself at least 3-4 hours to do it justice. Caerphilly Castle doesn't just show you history—it drops you right in the middle of it. Caerphilly Castle feels like a time travel. And at the free Cardiff Museum, you can even see the famous Blue Lady! And don't miss the Welsh cake, a treat only found in Wales. A fantastic day out at Europes 2nd largest castle. There are extensive grounds and ruins to explore, and a huge moat that you can walk around and enjoy on a sunny day .Inside the castle there are toilets, a picnic area and a gift shop but not much else. I understand that they're building a new cafe and eating area just inside the main gates .The leaning tower, which apparently leans further than the one in Pisa, is superb and make sure you get a picture where you're holding it up! #wales #castles #awesomepic #summervacation
