Calvi, a small town on the French island of Corsica
Founded in the 13th century, Calvi is located on the northwest coast of Corsica, France, the fourth-largest island in the Mediterranean.
The Republic of Genoa established a closed city center here in 1278 and built a new castle in 1491 to accommodate new artillery technology. Today, the castle is Calvi's landmark and a must-see.
The city's motto, "Calvi le Faithful," originally referred to its loyalty to the Republic of Genoa. The motto originated in 1553, when Calvi, with the help of Corsican exiles, repelled two attacks by the French and the Turks.
However, in 1768, the city, along with Corsica, was sold to the French by its loyal Republic of Genoa. The city was officially annexed to France in 1769. On August 15 of that year, Napoleon Bonaparte, one of the most prominent figures in modern French history, was born in Ajaccio, the capital of Corsica. The castle in Figure 1 is a 13th-century Genoese castle (Figures 1-3). It's also the birthplace of Christopher Columbus (Figure 8), and his statue is located near the castle. #Corsica #OverseasTravel #Mediterranean #IslandHoliday #Island #IslandTour #EuropeTravel #EuropeanTown #FrenchTown #france #corsica #calvi
