This is about Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. What impression did the city leave on me? Noisy, bustling, very lively, yet cozy: vibrant colorful murals (and such beautiful ones!), plenty of street cats, friendly people who always smile and greet you with "Buenos días," loud street fruit vendors (I still have some to try), colorful favelas that, while considered "slums," are so picturesque they’ve become a tourist attraction. Right next to them are grim gray high-rises creating a stark contrast, colorful retro cars, and unique birds (like yellow-blue parrots!). All of this surrounded by mountains, which we’ll definitely explore. And everywhere you hear the familiar and beloved Spanish language. Caracas is amazing! We went for a walk in one of the most remarkable (and once the most crime-ridden) neighborhoods—San Agustín. About 10 years ago, efforts began to revitalize it: a cultural center was built, the favelas were painted in various colors, numerous murals appeared on the walls (with dozens of street artists involved), and there’s even a special project featuring artworks by local artists displayed on the flat rooftops of the favelas, visible only when riding the cable car. They are stunning! The colorful favelas against the backdrop of majestic mountains look unusual and very beautiful.

Barrio San Agustin is not just a "slum" but the most musical and vibrant heart of Afro-Caribbean culture in Caracas. Tourists should visit it to see a completely different, unpolished side of the city, where life pulsates to the rhythms of salsa and drums. These are true "urban jungles" characterized by self-built homes on hillside slopes, where locals warmly welcome visitors. The main highlight of the area is its stunning street art: the walls of houses are transformed into colorful graffiti, creating a unique backdrop for walks. The atmosphere of poverty here is offset by incredible sincerity, music, and the opportunity to try national delicacies right on the spot. It's a chance to understand the soul of Venezuela through its contrasts.

First time visiting Venezuela

Why not visit the Mausoleum of Hugo Chávez, located in the Museum of the Revolution? The Hugo Chávez Memorial Complex is situated in a beautiful old district (which might be considered dangerous 🤭), surrounded by colorful favelas and picturesque mountains. By the time you reach the museum, your phone's memory will likely be full—your hands will instinctively reach for the camera to capture the vibrant, colorful, and eye-catching surroundings. A brief history: The Military History Museum has been located here since 1981. In February 1992, it served as the command center for the armed uprising led by Hugo Chávez against the government of President Carlos Andrés Pérez. Chávez was defeated and surrendered to the government. In 2002, after becoming president, Hugo Chávez hosted the first episode of the program "Hello, President" here to mark the 10th anniversary of the event. We arrived shortly before closing time, worried we might miss out, but we were incredibly lucky: there were almost no visitors, and a museum staff member gave us a private tour. Additionally, we timed our visit perfectly to witness the daily ritual—a ceremonial cannon shot fired every day at exactly 4:25 PM (the time of Chávez's death). Fascinating! The photo shows the very cannon. As for the mausoleum itself (photo 5)—the sarcophagus containing Hugo Chávez's body is surrounded by an honor guard and is located at the center of the memorial complex. Around it are the museum's offices, which we toured. It was quite interesting to look at photographs and personal belongings and learn some facts about Chávez's life. Personally, I knew almost nothing about him before this trip. Although I'm not a big fan of museums, I always pay attention to the upkeep of buildings, how locals preserve history and take pride in it, and the condition of items belonging to past generations. It's truly inspiring! And it's also impressive how passionately the staff care about their work and share it with visitors. By the way, visiting the Memorial Complex is completely free! In Caracas, just a few kilometers east of the vibrant historic city center lies the Chacao district. Aside from office buildings, the streets are lined with decent restaurants, and people in suits hurry by. It's easy to miss the Cayena Caracas under the shade of trees – after all, Leading Hotels of the World are known for their understated elegance. Besides the Cayena and Leading Hotels of the World flags, the entrance is adorned with the state flag and the Venezuelan flag. The hotel lobby isn't large, nor is the courtyard just a door away, but this courtyard, built in traditional Venezuelan style, is surprisingly spacious. The Chimenea Salon, tucked away in a corner, boasts high ceilings for ultimate comfort and is exclusively for guests. Lush greenery outside the windows creates a tropical rainforest feel. The restaurant and Green Monkey Bar are on the other side, connected yet separate, with rainforest murals on the walls complementing the courtyard perfectly. December is Caracas's dry season, with mostly sunny days and dappled sunlight filtering through the trees. Below the courtyard is a gym with a babbling mini waterfall; the interior is bright and dynamic. The hotel's rooftop boasts an infinity pool, with misty mountains seemingly within reach and Caracas cityscape in view. While chain hotels are ubiquitous, secluded luxury is rare. Headquartered in New York, Leading Hotels of the World will celebrate its 100th anniversary in two years. With over 400 hotels in more than 80 countries, sometimes, "The Leading Hotels of the World" guides your travels. The English at the Cayena Caracas reception was excellent. Whether Venezuelan women or men, their service was impeccable. The room even provided a two-to-three-prong power adapter—a thoughtful touch. During this trip to Venezuela, I missed Angel Falls and the Mount Roraima hike for various reasons, making the Leading Hotels of the World in Caracas the biggest highlight. I never imagined that a Leading Hotels of the World hotel would be hidden in Venezuela, in Caracas, and during my research. TIPS: ⚐ Brazilian Embassy: A two-minute walk from the Leading Hotels of Caracas. I also applied for a 10-year tourist visa there; it was processed in 50 minutes. ⚐ Caracas University City: One of Venezuela's only three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Not far from Cayena. You can get there by Yummy or the metro. ⚐ Venezuelan Coffee: Apparently much better than Colombian coffee. There's a supermarket behind Cayena Caracas with a variety of coffees to choose from. The hotel barista recommended a Venezuelan coffee with a light blue packaging.

#falladventures #familytravel there are quite a number of teleferico lines in Caracas. but this review appears to focus on the teleferico up to Parque Nacional Avila, which unfortunately is not operating at the moment (Oct 2022). the alternative is to take a 4x4 jeep ride or self drive a similar vehicle up. the road up is fairly steep and made of paver stones. the jeep ride costs $10 usd per head for the return trip, takes 30 min each way, and only operates on Fri, Sat and Sun. the jeep gets moving when it has at least 10 passengers so there is no fixed schedule to it. once up, you will see a cafe, a couple of stalls selling venezuelan snacks and fried food, as well as a carnival (paintball arena, drop ride etc). there is also an abandoned casino. you will see a view of the Caracas city from the top, if not shrouded by mist or cloud. if you continue walking down the path, away from the food stalls, you will reach Hotel Humboldt, a 5* hotel frequented by the well heeled local residents. this hotel also offers a day trip package with its own 4x4 jeep ride and I believe this costs $60 usd per person (possibly with lunch included) there is no mobile phone signal at estacio de servicio mariperez, where the jeep / teleferico rides begin. however, there is wifi available.

You´ll enjoy of a great walk as you leave behind the city´s noise and, when you are high enough, a great view of Venezuela´s capital. The only thing is that during weekends is very crowded, so you might like other hiking routes to explore Avila National Park. Excellent plan to disconnect from the city. Very good organization from the purchase of the ticket, board the funicular and, on arrival at the Park. The weather with haze, the activities start almost at noon, I found the meal a bit expensive. Beautiful scenery, breathe the fresh and clean air.

The Drizzle is a shocking and powerful waterfall, especially when the floodgates of the dam that precedes it, open to let flow an impetuous waterfall, which refreshes the hot and very humid Mood of the National Park. Recreational and sporting activities are available on some weekends. It offers trails for running, walking or mountain biking, spaces to manage the waterfall and many places to rest and take photos Monkeys can welcome you at the entrance, but you have to walk carefully, they are wild animals that are willing to fight for food, so do not carry snacks or candy out of pockets or bags.
