A mother and her young daughter stood quietly watching nearby, a scene that made me realize that faith here is not a performance, but an integral part of daily life. As you step into this old building, you’re greeted by a security guard who also doubles as the ticket seller—he collects the fee, hands you the ticket, and then returns to his post at the entrance. This casual yet authentic vibe somehow perfectly matches the essence of this place: unpretentious, understated, yet brimming with stories. The museum is located right across the street from Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral. From the wooden-framed windows of the second-floor corridor, you can gaze at the white Baroque façade of the cathedral, quietly standing amidst the flow of traffic, like a living vintage photograph. The only exceptions are private hotel areas or nature reserves where swimming might be restricted to protect the environment. So, if you pack a mask and snorkel in advance, and ideally fins too, you can snorkel anywhere and as much as you want. That’s what I always do, and I recommend you do the same. No need to book tours or stick to schedules—just head to the shore and dive in. If you didn’t buy gear at home, that’s not a problem either. On the islands, rental is very affordable, and rental stations are available at almost every beach. Approximate prices are as follows: mask and snorkel from 100 to 400 pesos per day, fins from 150 to 300 pesos. A full set rarely exceeds 500 pesos. It’s a small cost for a huge amount of fun. It is easily recognizable by its patterned shell and beak-shaped head. Both species are protected. You are not allowed to touch, feed, or chase them. Where to find turtles Panglao Alona Beach Any beaches with reefs in the Philippines (I mentioned these two because I personally swam with turtles there.) In Panglao, turtles are most often found near reefs and areas with seagrass. It’s better to swim a bit away from the central part of the beach, where there are fewer boats and noise. Moalboal In Moalboal, turtles regularly appear right at the reef line near the shore. Sometimes, you only need to swim 10–20 meters. This is one of the most accessible places to encounter them. They are not afraid of people, but you’ll feel more comfortable swimming away from crowded tourist areas. Best time to spot turtles The best time is in the morning at 7:00 or in the evening before sunset at 17:00. The water is clearer, and the currents are weaker. Around midday, turtles often feed in shallow waters. In windy weather, visibility decreases, so it’s better to choose calm days. Turtles stay near reefs and seagrass. If you don’t see them near the shore, carefully move along the reef line. Facts about sea turtles What do they eat? Green turtles are mostly herbivorous, eating seagrass and algae. Hawksbill turtles feed on sponges and small organisms. How do they sleep? They sleep underwater, hiding under reef ledges. They can hold their breath for a long time and periodically surface for air. Speed In a relaxed mode, they move slowly, but they can accelerate sharply when needed. Without fins, it’s hard to keep up with their pace. Lifespan Sea turtles live over 50 years and return to lay eggs on the beaches where they were born. Safety Sea turtles are not aggressive. They don’t bite or attack people. Observing them is completely safe if you maintain distance and behave calmly. Equipment rental On tourist beaches like Panglao, Alona Beach, and Moalboal, it’s easy to find rental shops for snorkeling and diving equipment. I recommend renting a mask with a snorkel. I’ve rented fins several times, and everything was clean. Alternatively, you can buy a set in advance. You can ask to have the mask disinfected additionally. Prices are affordable, and rentals are available by the hour or day. I suggest using fins. Turtles swim faster than they seem, and fins allow you to comfortably maintain distance. Rental shops often offer action cameras as well. This is convenient if you don’t want to risk your phone. I used a DJI Pro 5 for filming. The quality is good in clear water and sunlight. Panglao is an island where I spent a week, but I would have happily stayed for a month. It’s tourist-friendly, convenient, and easy to navigate. This is often the destination for first-time visitors to the Philippines. Here’s what I saw and felt. Beaches The island boasts many beaches with white sand and crystal-clear water. I visited several of them. Dumaluan and Bolod felt calm and relaxing, with fewer people and a stronger connection to nature. Alona Beach is the most famous and lively. During the day, it’s crowded with people, boats, and music. Swimming is possible, but I preferred visiting in the evening for a stroll or dinner. If you’re looking for cleaner water and fewer crowds, open the map and explore the coastline a bit further from Alona. You can find your perfect beach in just one day. Convenience and Location Panglao is connected to Bohol by a bridge. The airport is located right on the island, saving time after arrival. You can reach the beaches within ten to fifteen minutes. Shops, cafes, pharmacies, ATMs, and bike rentals are all nearby. Getting around is easiest on a motorbike. Rentals start at around 250 pesos per day. If you’re renting for a week, don’t hesitate to ask for a discount. You can also use tricycles, but it’s better to negotiate prices in advance. Bargaining is acceptable. If you plan to actively explore Bohol, a convenient option is to hire a car with a driver for the whole day. This costs around 2,000 pesos and is often cheaper than booking separate tours. Excursions and Nature Panglao is a great base for exploring Bohol. Chocolate Hills, waterfalls, jungles, and viewpoints are one to two hours away. We encountered rain several times, so a raincoat and a light jacket are definitely useful. Marine tours are a story of their own. Boats depart daily to Balicasag and Virgin Island. Snorkeling is truly impressive—corals, turtles, schools of fish. Sometimes you might hear about sharks and dolphins, but that’s a matter of luck. It’s better to book through trusted agencies or your accommodation hosts for peace of mind and clear pricing. Infrastructure The island has everything for a comfortable stay. Supermarkets, coffee shops, laundromats, coworking spaces, salons, and 24-hour stores. There are plenty of places offering European cuisine. If you want to save on groceries, you can go to Tagbilaran, where prices are lower and there are larger supermarkets. The clearest water is usually in the morning until around ten. If the sea looks murky in one spot, it’s easier to move to another beach than to wait. Cons Alona Beach is overcrowded. There are lots of people, boats near the shore, vendors, and music. The beach itself isn’t very large, and the water isn’t always crystal-clear. If you’re staying nearby, it’s worth walking to adjacent parts of the coastline for a quieter and more pleasant experience. Prices are higher than in other parts of Bohol and on less touristy islands. Accommodation, vehicle rentals, and even fruits are more expensive. Nightlife is mostly centered around Alona. There are bars, but overall, the island is calm. Most places close early. On New Year’s Eve, it was lively and fun with fireworks and parties, but on regular days, the atmosphere is relaxed. Conclusion Panglao is a convenient and comfortable island. It’s suitable for those who want to combine beach relaxation with excursions without complicated logistics. If you don’t mind the touristy vibe and slightly higher prices, it’s a great starting point for exploring the Philippines. Canyoning in Moabual is one of the most memorable excursions in Cebu, definitely worth including in your itinerary. The experience will be more than just a photo gallery, and you'll remember your legs fondly the next day. Where and how to buy a tour Tour bookings are easy to make right on the street in Moabual. There are plenty of people offering canyoning tours: agencies, private guides, and roadside stands. It's hard to miss. There are two options: arriving at the point yourself or taking a tour The average cost of a tour is about 1,800 PHP. The price may vary slightly, but generally, it's more or less the same for everyone. How the tour works If you choose a tour, a small, comfortable bus with approximately 10-15 seats will pick you up. The drive to the point takes about 40 minutes. On-site instructions are provided, groups are formed, and you'll be provided with a life jacket helmet free water. Helmets are required for a reason. The route includes a cave with stalactites and stalagmites. Small stones can occasionally fall from above. You'll also pass through canyons and waterfalls, where it's easy to hit your head. Footwear and Preparation In some dangerous areas, you may be provided with shoes on-site, but I recommend preparing in advance. The best option is reef shoes or thick-soled sandals. You'll be walking on rocks, which are often slippery. The shoes provided at the entrance are worn out, often missing half the sole. Shoes for larger feet may simply not be available. Route and Activities During canyoning, you'll walk through canyons and waterfalls, jump into water, descend natural chutes, and swim between rocks. Some places offer bungee jumping for an additional fee. The guides know exactly where you can jump for free and where you have to pay, and they'll always give you advice. You can also opt for a zipline or not. There's almost always a line for the zipline. Why it's better to take an official tour We took an unofficial tour, and from experience, I recommend taking an official tour, for example through Trip.com. The reasons are simple less waiting time better organization higher level of safety According to the rules, one guide is assigned to each person. If you're in a group, the guides know this and carefully guide you all together, but they still give you individual attention. Lunch Most tours include lunch. It's simple but adequate. It's a great meal after canyoning. You won't go hungry. How long does it take The entire tour, including travel, takes about 4-5 hours. The canyoning route itself lasts about 2.5-3 hours, depending on the group's pace. Emotions It's a little scary at first. It's really fun afterwards. At the end, you want to do it again. Adrenaline, cold water, screams, laughter, and the feeling that the day wasn't wasted. Canyoning in Moabual is about raw emotion, stepping out of your comfort zone, and memories that last longer than a tan. Panglao is a small island where it’s easy to stay longer. We actually started thinking about moving here for a couple of months next year. Panglao is about something special. About waking up without plans, walking to the sea, swimming, having breakfast, and suddenly realizing you don’t need to go anywhere. I caught myself thinking, how nice it is to think about nothing except how to live today well. It’s a small island next to Bohol. Many people choose it as a beach base, but if you don’t rush, Panglao opens up in a very calm and pleasant way. ⸻ Where it is and how to get there The easiest way is to fly or take a ferry to Panglao via Cebu. The ferry takes about 2 hours. Ferry and flight tickets can be booked directly in the Trip app. The fastest route: Cebu → Tagbilaran Flight time about 1 hour Price usually 40–90 USD one way From the airport to the beaches of Panglao it takes about 15–20 minutes by tricycle or motorbike. If you’re already on Bohol, Panglao is connected to it by bridges. The drive takes around 30 minutes. ⸻ When to visit Panglao The best time is from December to May. February and March are the most comfortable. April and May are hotter, but the sea is great. From March to May there can sometimes be algae bloom, especially: • at Alona Beach • on popular beaches without strong currents It’s not constant and not everywhere. Often it’s enough to change the beach or the time of swimming. Reef areas and boat trips are usually clean. ⸻ Where to stay Panglao is simple. There are no “bad” or “good” areas here, it’s more about the rhythm. Alona Beach The most popular area. Cafes, shops, dive centers, active life. It can be noisy. Good if you want to be in the center of everything. A bit away from Alona Quieter, more space, cheaper. A good option if you want calm without isolation. Many beautiful and aesthetic hotels. West and north of the island Fewer people, more local life. Good for long stays, especially if you have a motorbike. We stayed at Fun Hotel. You can read my review on my page. We were very happy with it. ⸻ Beaches and the sea Panglao is not about one perfect beach. There are many beaches around the island, all different. Alona Beach The most crowded with tourists, but there is enough space. Sandy beach, you swim past some algae and reach the reef. Some people even saw a whale shark near the reef beyond the buoys. Whale sharks are safe and do not attack people. It’s lively and convenient, with boats, tours, dive centers, and sunsets. Sometimes the water can be a bit cloudy, but not always. Dumaluan and White Beach More spacious and calmer. Great for swimming and long walks. Reefs Many reefs start right from the shore. With a mask and snorkel you can swim every day without tours. ⸻ Things to do in Panglao It’s great here to: • snorkel from the shore • visit nearby beaches • take boat trips to small islands • watch sunsets • eat seafood If you want more activity: • diving • reef trips • a day trip to Bohol for hills and waterfalls You can also visit a cave, ride jet skis, banana boats, parasail, or take a boat trip to see dolphins. These activities are affordable and easy to arrange locally. ⸻ Food and cafes Food is simple and easy. There are many cafes with European and Asian cuisine. Fresh fish, fruits, rice, coconuts, McDonald’s and fast food near Alona Beach. There are shops and several 7-Eleven stores on the island. If you need specific familiar products, it’s better to buy them in advance. Cash is still important. Cards are not accepted everywhere. There are many exchange offices on the island, and the exchange rate is usually better than in Cebu and much better than at the airport. ⸻ Getting around the island The best option is a motorbike. Rental costs 10–15 USD per day. Bike rentals are everywhere. They usually don’t ask for a license, but I don’t recommend riding without one. Always follow traffic rules. If you don’t want to ride: • tricycles • taxis (Grab does not work here) Short rides usually cost 2–5 USD. ⸻ Places I recommend visiting • The cave • As many beaches as possible. Bring your own mask and snorkel so you don’t need to rent every time • Napaling Reef. Very beautiful but crowded. Swim a bit farther and it’s amazing. Entrance fee is 200 pesos per person. Parking and access to the hotel area cost another 100 pesos. Lockers and tables are available • A beautiful palm tree alley about 10 minutes from Alona Beach. If you stay longer, bring mosquito spray and food. Almost no people, quiet, palms and sea. Perfect for sunset • Diving on the island is good. Not spectacular, but solid. Chocolate Hills are one of the most recognizable natural landmarks of the Philippines and the main symbol of Bohol Island. Over a thousand uniformly shaped hills are scattered across the central part of the island, resembling truffles carefully placed on a giant plate. How Chocolate Hills Were Formed From a scientific perspective, the explanation is both simple and beautiful. The hills were formed from limestone and coral deposits that millions of years ago were the ocean floor. Water and time did their work, eroding the rocks and shaping them into smooth, cone-like hills. During the rainy season, they are green, but in the dry season, the grass dries out, turning the hills brown. This is when they truly resemble chocolate candies, hence the name. Legend and Local Folklore There’s also a charming story. According to legend, two giants fought each other, throwing stones. When the battle ended, they left behind thousands of hills. A more romantic version tells of a giant who cried over unrequited love, and his tears solidified into hills. Locals prefer this story over geology. Location and How to Get There The main viewing area is called Chocolate Hills Complex and is located in the Carmen area, in the center of the island. How to Get There From Tagbilaran: about 1 hour by motorbike or car From Panglao: approximately 1.5 hours You don’t necessarily need to book a tour. It’s easy to get there on your own by motorbike or taxi. Visiting Experience You arrive at the parking lot, where you purchase a ticket. Then, you transfer to a local shuttle that takes you to the entrance of the viewing area. From there, it’s straightforward: You get off Climb the stairs Reach the viewing platforms At the top, there are two viewing platforms offering panoramic views of hundreds of hills. You can take your time to walk around, take photos, and enjoy the scenery without rushing. Cost and Operating Hours Entrance fee: around 100 PHP Transfer is included in the price Open daily from morning till evening Typically, visiting the site takes about 30–45 minutes. Additional Activities If you’re looking for more action, there are paid activities available at the base. You can ride: ATVs Buggy cars To access these, head down and ask the staff where the rental area is. They’ll guide you on-site. Is It Worth Visiting? Yes. It’s not a place where you’ll spend half a day, but it’s definitely one of those spots you should see at least once. Especially during the dry season, when the hills truly look chocolatey. Sardines gather along the coast of Moalboal all year round. This is a rarity. In most parts of the world, sardine migrations are seasonal and unpredictable. Here, the reef and currents create ideal conditions, so the school stays close to the shore constantly. Another fact: Sardines use the density of their school as protection. When a predator appears, the fish don't scatter but instead tighten together. It's during these moments that an incredible show of light and movement begins underwater. Sardines are incredibly fast. They react to the slightest movement in the water. You can't control the school, but you can become part of it if you simply stop making sudden movements. Where to Watch the Sardines The main location is the area around Panagsama Beach. The reef starts almost immediately from the shore. Sometimes the sardines are at a depth of just two to three meters, visible even from the surface. If you move slightly to the left of the central part of the beach, there are fewer people, and the school often behaves more calmly. This is especially noticeable in the morning. Best Time to Visit Early morning. The sea is calmer, the light is softer, and there are almost no people. The school often stays closer to the shore. Sunset is also beautiful, but there is more movement in the water and more snorkelers. However, the sardines are there all day long, and you don't need to swim near tourist boats as they are spread along the entire coast. There is no specific seasonality. Sardines are here year-round, but their density can vary from day to day. What to Bring A mask and snorkel are essential. Fins are optional but make it easier to stay in place. A life jacket isn't necessary if you're confident in the water. A wide-angle camera will give the best results because the school is massive and won't fit in the frame. Renting gear on the beach is more expensive; it's cheaper in the town just five minutes away. I recommend getting fins and a snorkel mask for breathing. Don't dive into the center of the school abruptly. Don't wave your arms. It's better to lie on the water and let the sardines flow around you. The calmer you behave, the closer they'll come to you.

In Moalboal, there's no need to plan anything. Just head to the sea, step into the water, swim, and enjoy the underwater world—with a 99% chance that a turtle will be swimming right next to you. No boats. No diving. No crowds. The strangest thing about this experience is how effortlessly it happens. You’re not going on a tour. You’re not putting on complicated gear. You’re not waiting for luck. The turtles live their lives here, and you simply find yourself alongside them. The best spot for snorkeling is around Panagsama Beach. The reef starts almost immediately. The water is usually calm, especially in the morning. Turtles can be spotted just a few meters from the shore. Sometimes they come very close, other times they swim a bit farther away. I swam with two turtles at once! It was an incredible experience. It’s important to stay calm—they’re not aggressive. This is their home, and you’re just a guest swimming nearby. The best time to encounter them is in the morning or closer to sunset. The most valuable feature here is that the reef starts almost immediately. You step into the water, swim a little, and you're already above the corals. Sea turtles live here permanently. And this is also where the famous sardine run takes place. The sardines don't follow a schedule and aren't part of a tour. You simply swim, and at some point, a living silver cloud gathers around you. Sometimes closer to the shore, sometimes farther away. It's different every time. Turtles can be seen almost daily. They calmly swim near the reef and are not afraid of people. And all of this is without boats, tickets, or time limits. Swim as much as you want. ⸻ Hot Springs Not far from Moalboal, there are hot and thermal springs. People usually visit them in the evening or after an active day. Warm water, jungle, silence. It's perfect after snorkeling or canyoning when your body is tired, and you just want to relax. ⸻ Trip to Oslob to See Whale Sharks From Moalboal, it takes about two hours by bike or car to get to Oslob. Oslob offers one of the most famous attractions in the Philippines: swimming with whale sharks. Here's how it works: - Arrive very early in the morning - Attend a briefing - Enter the water from the shore or a boat - The sharks come close The swim is short, but the experience is unforgettable. Whale sharks are huge, calm, and non-aggressive. Everything is conducted under supervision. Keep in mind that this is a touristy spot, and it can get crowded.
