2024 Changchun Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in November)
When it was the capital of the puppet state Manchuko, Changchun witnessed the many crimes of the Japanese invaders, and the museum of the Imperial Palace of Manchuko does a good job of demonstrating that. Historical buildings to remind people of this somber time period also include the eight great ministries of Manchukuo and the former location of the State Council of the puppet state Manchuko. The films produced at the Changchun Film Studio have influenced generations of people. You can now experience for yourself advanced film making technology in Changying Century City or go to the Changchun Film Museum to understand the development and history of the film industry as it has taken place here. Jingyue Lake National Forest Park on the outskirts of Changchun is a vast expanse of woodland. Here you can go walking, riding or take a boat ride, and bathe in the embrace of nature.

If you visit Changchun in October or November, don't miss the chance to ride the G54 tram and visit Changchun Sculpture Park. The autumn scenery is breathtaking!
1. Changchun Autumn Tram 🚃
This is where the TV series "A Lifelong Journey" was filmed! In the most beautiful season of the year, the tracks are covered with a golden carpet of fallen leaves. The tram slowly travels along Chuncheng Street, as if it is heading into the arms of autumn.
The tram runs along Chuncheng Street in Changchun. Take the G54 tram. If you want to take photos, the best spots are between Nanyang Road Station and Chuangye Street Station.
2. Check out the autumn maple forest 🍁
Next, head to Changchun World Sculpture Park. Admission is free. We recommend entering through the Southeast Gate 2 and heading straight to the red maple forest. The fiery red leaves are like the burning passion of autumn.

The Rise and Fall of History: A Journey Through the Puppet Manchukuo Palace Museum
The Puppet Manchukuo Palace Museum, located in Changchun, was once the imperial palace of Manchukuo. This site bears witness to a unique and heavy chapter in modern Chinese history. Within these tranquil palace walls lies the story of the rise and fall of the last emperor, Puyi, and numerous relics from the puppet regime established during Japan's invasion of China. Visiting this place is not only a remembrance of history but also a profound reflection on the intertwining of humanity and power.
Upon entering the palace, the unique architectural style immediately catches the eye, blending the elegance of traditional Chinese palaces with the modern feel of European architecture. Whether it's the main hall, the Qinmin Building, or the Xiaobai Building, each structure carries the marks of Puyi's complex and contradictory life. The various exhibits within the palace, from imperial artifacts to archival materials of the puppet regime, vividly convey the reality and helplessness of that historical period.
The most historically valuable areas are Puyi's living quarters and office spaces, especially the Qinmin Building, where Puyi handled the puppet government's affairs. Although he was nominally the 'emperor,' in reality, he was a puppet controlled and manipulated by the Japanese invaders. The helplessness and struggle of Puyi are subtly evident in this building, highlighting the tragic nature of this history and prompting reflection on the shifts in power and national destiny.
In addition to the architecture and historical artifacts, the gardens surrounding the palace add a touch of softness to the otherwise heavy atmosphere. The scenic beauty of the gardens offers a glimpse into the tranquility and splendor of the former royal life, yet everything here is overshadowed by the weight of history, evoking a sense of melancholy.
The Puppet Manchukuo Palace Museum stands as a testament to the history of Manchukuo and a reflection on a complex and tragic period in modern Chinese history. Every detail here serves as a reminder to remember history and cherish the peace of the present. For visitors interested in modern history, this is undoubtedly a thought-provoking destination.
Changchun New World Shopping Park|There is a river inside the mall
🎡New World Shopping Park is the first multi-functional lifestyle experience center in Northeast China that perfectly combines leisure and shopping. It was built by the Zhongdong Group with an investment of 1 billion RMB, covering an operating area of up to 200,000 square meters. The exterior of the shopping mall looks ordinary, but it is really great to stroll inside. It is very close to the Puppet Manchurian Palace Museum, about a ten-minute walk. Friends from out of town can plan to visit both places together. We went to the palace in the morning, and after getting tired, we came to New World for lunch and rest at noon.
🌱The first and second floors are regular shopping malls.
🌱The third floor has Venice Water Street: You can take a small boat, and the photos turn out great. It costs 15 RMB per person, which is not expensive. It is a bit tiring for the legs, but the photos taken on the boat and on the shore are very beautiful.
🌱The third floor also has Zhongshu Pavilion: As soon as you enter, it feels like walking into the magical library from Harry Potter. There aren't many books, but there are free stamps and various little gadgets. It's great for taking photos and checking in.
🌱The basement floor has a large food court: It's very big, as shown in the last picture. There are various foods, and it's very crowded. You might get lost while walking. There are also restaurants on the fourth floor, so you can satisfy any craving.
Not Switzerland! It's Changchun! Entering the world of Hayao Miyazaki's manga
The sunny Jingyuetan is really beautiful, with blue skies, white clouds, green grasslands, black forests, endless lakes, and wetlands full of lotus flowers. Seeing it with your own eyes is really like a fairy tale. There are many ways to play: you can take a boat, ride a bike, camp, play in the water, and take great photos. It's very suitable for the whole family to visit together. Here is a nanny-level guide for you👇

Changchun's!! Newly opened!! I could stay...
Have shopping malls in China
evolved to this extent????
I am forever in awe of the designers of Changchun's shopping malls. I visited two malls and it was like opening the doors to a new world. Someone actually built a Hongya Cave right inside a mall, and there's even a giant Buddha statue on the mountain top... The layout is intricate, with paths crisscrossing; going upstairs feels like climbing a mountain, and it's so easy to get lost. There's even a giant little monk at the entrance of the mall!!! I heard it walks every morning... and it changes clothes at irregular intervals, truly omg
The other mall I visited was a direct replica of the Venetian Macao, complete with canals... and this isn't even on the first floor!! It's on the top floor... and on the same level, there's a bookstore that looks just like Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Changchun, Jilin

Changchun! You really know how to keep a secret! You've created a city of ice and snow and didn't say a word
Changchun!! I really admire you!
You really care about us southerners!!
You've brought the entire Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge here in an ice and snow version~
Even I, who have never been to Macau,
have directly checked in at an Ice Age version of Macau🤣
There's also the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, Taipei 101, Zhuhai Opera House,
The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi'an, the Corner Tower in Beijing, Shanhaiguan in Hebei...
There should also be Hangzhou, Shanghai, Huaguoshan Cave...
There are so many ice and snow cities that I can't count them all‼️
-
Really, the Northeast is not just about the Harbin Ice and Snow World.
The Ice and Snow Wonderland in Changchun, Jilin is also amazing~
You can check in at so many ice and snow cities at once
And you don't have to squeeze with people! You can play with slides and ice stools at will.
It's really amazing~
-
📷tips:
1️⃣You can take photos in the park whenever you come🤣I took a photo during the day this time, and there were only about ten people in the park. You won't take photos of others and you don't have to wait in line for a spot. You can get great shots!
2️⃣In addition to taking photos, I really recommend everyone to try the aerial kilometer snow drift!! Really! It feels like it can compete with the big slide in the Ice and Snow World. It's so much fun
3️⃣The weather in Changchun is also very cold! You can dress like you do in Harbin~ If you like light or white colors, remember to wear some colorful scarves and hats~ This way, your photos will look even better~

In winter this place is one of the most visited in Changchun. Here you can find beautiful sculptures made of snow.
No matter you look at them daytime or at night, they’re incredible.
They look amazing at night, because they’re colorful and it seems that you’re in a wonderland.
In winter it’s extremely cold in this park, so if you go there you must wear very warm clothes. You can go skating and enjoy the beautiful ice sculptures. Also there are some other activities you can do there.
I was so impressed with the sculptures that I visited this place twice.

The ice city: Changchun
Looking over the South Lake Park at a higher place, a panoramic view can be gained. It shapes like a dumbbell that is narrow from east to west and long south to north. The water area is 96 hectares which is similar in size as that of Summer Palace in Beijing. The South Lake Park is the largest one in the downtown area of Changchun.
The design related to South Lake Park was started by the Japanese in the Great New Capital City Plan. It was just made so by making use of the water source from Xinglong Channel of Yitong River and piling up a dam of 10 meters in height and 800 meters in length along today’s Gongnong Road. There is a bridge separating the lake into two parts. More than 60 years ago, there was also a bridge named Chuihong over the lake which was not structured by reinforced concrete but wooden material. In August 1948, the Kuomintang army burned it down in order to block hinder the liberation army. The bridge we see today was built in 1979 and its name originated from South Lake, and thus was named South Lake Bridge.
The water area of South Lake is the largest, which serves as a park and meanwhile functions as a storage source of water of the city.
A big park with lots to see inside and out
A big park with lots to see inside and out
The park is huge and most of the visit will involve walking from one building to another. There is a shuttle bus which goes every 15 minutes between buildings but this can mean lots of waiting outside too.
There are some interesting sculptures and exhibits inside the buildings. However, it still feels like this is a developing attraction. If you are not an art lover then this museum might not be the most interesting way to spend your time in Changchun.
The most interesting building was the large hall where before Covid they held yearly sculpture making competitions. You can see some of the different works from different countries.
A perfect day out if it is not too hot or cold to enjoy the large park and surroundings at the same time. If not, relying on the bus can be a little slow and overall a less interesting visit.
A unique experience in China
The Puppet Emperors palace is must visit if you are visiting the far north east of China. This was the seat of Manchuria government for a short time and the home of the Puppet emperor. This building is incredibly well preserved and looked after.
So often historic buildings in China are refurbished too much, leaving behind less of the history. However, you really get a feel from the palace that it has been left almost untouched since it was abandoned all those years ago.
Parking and tickets is easy. There is a large parking lot next to the attraction and we needed passports and health codes to get tickets in the ticket office on the day. There is also a metro station very nearby. The palace is not far from the city and relatively easy to get to.
I have heard that it can get very busy, however, the twice I have been it has been very quiet. There are often lots of large tour groups but we just try to avoid them and visit different rooms.
The palace is a really interesting place to spend half a day and learn about some more recent political history in China. A very unique experience in China.
Enjoy the smell of a fresh northern summer
We visited Jingyuetan during the national school summer holidays in July. It was incredibly quiet.
An important consideration when visiting the park is how to get around. The park would take hours to walk around. The park offers a range of transport options. You can hire an electric buggy, but need to have had your China driving license for more than 2 years. You can also hire a range of bicycles. We decided to pay for the park bus which was only 20rmb for an unlimited wristband. There are many stops within the park and a bus comes every 10 minutes or so.
The park feels very unique in China, it feels more like northern Europe because Changchun is so far north. The trees are very tall and walking through the park is a cool and relaxing experience in the height of the Chinese summer.
There is lots to do in park including watersports, a small animal park and a range of walking trails.
The park/ reserve is a long drive out of the city itself but the roads are easy and there is a multi level parking lot right next to the park.
Jingyuetan is well worth a day out and can easily occupy a whole day.

Pu Yi, the last emperor of the "famous" in history, is well known to people but not because he has the military merits of Qinhuang and Hanwu, nor because he has the political achievements of Kangxi and Qianlong. At the age of three, he began to ascend to the throne until 1912, and in the middle three times he became the emperor and eventually became a citizen. Throughout the history of Chinas emperor system for more than two thousand years, most emperors only took one emperors position in their lifetime, but only the last generation. The emperor Pu Yi did not bother to make three emperors one after another. It can be said that it is the only three emperors in Chinese history. Coming to Changchun, I walked into the Puppet Manchurian Museum and explored the past and present life of the last emperor's tragedy along the trajectory of history.
