Not because they were on a bucket list. I went with a purpose. I was seeking my roots. My grandparents came from Jieyang. Growing up, I heard fragments of stories about Chaoshan. The food we ate. The dialect we spoke. The traditions we kept. But like many overseas Chinese families, somewhere between generations and modern life, the connection became weaker. I always knew where my grandparents came from. I just had never been there myself. So this year, I decided to go back. Not as a tourist. But as a grandson. To walk the streets they once walked. We originally planned to spend 2–3 days in Chaozhou. In fact, we had already booked our hotel accordingly. But after a full day exploring the city, we changed our booking and decided to leave the next morning. We came to Chaozhou with one simple question: does this city deserve more than a day on the itinerary? Chaozhou is often described as one of Guangdong's cultural gems, famous for its ancient architecture, tea culture, and incredible Chaoshan cuisine. After spending a day here, we can absolutely understand why people recommend visiting. However, we also realized that for us, one day was enough to experience most of what the city has to offer. Our day started with lunch at Guantang Brothers (官塘兄弟), one of the city's well-known Chaoshan beef hotpot restaurants. The experience was exactly what we'd hoped for. Fresh beef sliced to order, a light and clean broth, and flavors that let the quality of the meat speak for itself. It was easily one of the highlights of our visit and a must-try for anyone coming to Chaozhou. Fun fact: despite the broth tasting relatively light, we found ourselves drinking water for the rest of the day! We're not sure if it was the dipping sauce, the seasonings, or simply because we couldn't stop eating, but it's probably the thirstiest we've ever been after a hotpot meal. 😅 After lunch, we headed into the Ancient City. One thing worth knowing is that the area feels surprisingly quiet during the morning and early afternoon. Many shops, snack stalls, tea houses, and local businesses don't fully open until later in the day. If you're visiting, don't be surprised if some streets feel sleepy at first. As the afternoon progressed, the city slowly came to life. We explored the ancient city gates, wandered through the historic streets, admired the beautiful temple architecture, and visited the famous Guangji Bridge, one of the most iconic landmarks in Chaozhou. One of our favorite experiences was spending the afternoon at the Phoenix Tea House Folk Stage (凤凰茶馆民俗舞台). While enjoying traditional Phoenix Dancong tea (凤凰单丛茶), we watched a live folk performance, including the energetic Yingge Dance. Accompanied by local snacks, peanuts, sunflower seeds, and sweets, it was a wonderful introduction to Chaoshan culture and one of the most memorable parts of our day. As evening arrived, Chaozhou completely transformed. The ancient gates glowed under warm lights, the old streets became lively, and the city felt much more vibrant than it had during the day. Walking through the illuminated Ancient City and seeing Guangji Bridge lit up at night was the perfect way to end our visit. So, does Chaozhou deserve more than one day? For us, the answer was no. We genuinely enjoyed our time here and would absolutely recommend visiting. However, most of the city's major attractions are concentrated around the Ancient City and can be explored comfortably within a single day. After finishing our sightseeing, we felt we had seen everything we wanted to see, which is why we decided to leave the following morning. That doesn't take away from what Chaozhou offers. The city is rich in history, culture, tea traditions, and fantastic food. It's simply a smaller destination than many travelers might expect. If you're planning a trip, our recommendation would be to dedicate one full day to Chaozhou and enjoy it at a relaxed pace. You'll have enough time to experience the highlights, enjoy a traditional beef hotpot, sip Phoenix Dancong tea, explore the Ancient City, and admire Guangji Bridge after dark. So, I visited one of the filming locations, Chaozhou, and felt that warmth in its alleys and everyday life. · Chaozhou feels like stepping into the old times from the movie. Alleys beside Paifang Street The main street of Paifang Street is bustling with people, but wandering into the alleys on either side feels like going back decades—the houses remain as they were, old faded posters adorn the teahouse walls, and grandmas dry handmade noodles by the door. The breeze carries a warm, nostalgic scent. · Kaiyuan Temple Right next to Paifang Street, you come across it as you walk. Entering here, your heart calms. Towering ancient trees, serene red walls, and the scent of incense bring an inexplicable peace. · Guangji Bridge Walking on this thousand-year-old bridge during the day, you see pavilions scattered along it and the Han River flowing gently beneath. 📍 Chaozhou, China Another city we decided to visit in January. Here, I saw my first magnolia of the year 🌸. China has many porcelain production centers, and one of them is here. Even today, modern porcelain for daily use is produced here. 🎪 We stayed in the center of the old town (I marked the hotel in the photo). Be sure to choose a location in the center. ⛩️ Walk along the city wall The city wall has been preserved here, along with all the gates. Of course, they have been heavily restored. But it was so interesting to walk along the wall. You get a view of the river on one side and the city streets on the other! 🗓️ Spending a day or two in Chaozhou is pleasant. It’s a small city. 🌉 Walk across Guangji Bridge (I wrote a separate post about it on my profile) The city has preserved a very ancient bridge. Its middle section consists of boats that are connected during the day so people can cross between the banks. At night, the boats are separated to allow water traffic. 🏮 At 8:00 PM, a small light show begins. Projections on the bridge are accompanied by music. Thanks to the locals for telling us about it. There’s almost no information about this city in Russian, and we might have missed it. But the people here are very friendly and always ready to help. If you visit, keep this in mind. 🪭 We also attended a musical about the city’s history. A very beautiful show at the local cultural center! We saw a poster in the city and asked the reception staff to help us buy tickets. 🥀 Within walking distance from the main streets of the old town is Chaozhou West Lake Park. It was also pleasant to stroll there. Beautiful pagodas, pavilions, and lanterns. 🏠 Our hotel here turned out to be the best! Right in the heart of the old town. The window in front of the bed offered a view of the city’s main gate. We spent two days here, calm and leisurely. (Marked in the photo) 🚗 We traveled from the train station to the city by taxi, booked through the Didi app. From the taxi windows, we saw the modern city—it looks very similar to ours. High-rises, greenery, nothing unusual. So my recommendation is to explore the old town. Like in Quanzhou, Chaozhou has many workshops where artisans create various items. You can watch the craftsmen at work and buy their creations. Wood, porcelain, straw products—it was fascinating to wander from one workshop to another. We didn’t visit the local museum; instead, we strolled through the city streets and explored wherever we could.
