American Village is a large shopping and tourist complex located in Chatan, Okinawa, Japan. It was developed on the site of a former U.S. military airfield and features shopping malls, cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, a movie theater, a Ferris wheel, and more. The streets have a distinctly American vibe, making it a great spot for taking photos. This place has its own charm both during the day and at night. You can enjoy the beach during the day and the sunset in the evening. To fully experience it, staying at least one night is highly recommended. I stayed for two nights this time and was extremely satisfied.

A short flight from Kaohsiung feels like stepping through a portal to a different pace of life. Visiting Okinawa for the third time, the initial unfamiliarity has faded, replaced by a sense of ease akin to visiting an old friend. In just three days and two nights, we created new memories filled with surprises amidst the familiar sea breeze. Day 1: Urban Vibes and Late-Night Wagyu Indulgence Arriving in Naha at noon, the southern sun greeted us warmly. After picking up our rental car from OKIBLUSE, our first stop was "Okinawa Wife's Shop" for some light shopping to kick off the trip. The afternoon was spent at Urasoe PARCO CITY, a massive mall that felt like a maze of temptations—from a hearty lunch to a relaxing afternoon tea. To truly explore it, one could easily spend an entire day. In the evening, we checked into Tokyu Stay Naha Okinawa Hotel. The spacious bed and comfortable bathtub were a welcome respite from the day's travels. Adding to the excitement, Don Quijote Kokuba Store was conveniently located downstairs, offering the perfect excuse for a midnight treasure hunt. As night fell, we strolled to Kokusai Street and savored the craftsmanship of sushi at "Chokotto Sushi." Immersing ourselves in the neon-lit nightlife of the island, we picked up Okinawan Wagyu beef from a local supermarket and returned to the hotel. In the quiet of the night, the Wagyu sizzled in the pan, its aroma filling the room. Toasting with a glass of wine, this private indulgence was the perfect ending to our first day. We then headed to American Village, strolling through its exotic streets and enjoying the beach. The warmest moment of the trip occurred during dinner at "Fukugyu Yakiniku," where we met a solo traveler from Taichung. Her generosity treated our family to a feast of premium A5 Wagyu beef. The sweetness of the Wagyu was matched by the kindness of this chance encounter. After dinner, we moved to the beach to watch the Saturday night fireworks under the starry sky, etching this serendipitous connection deeply into our hearts. We enjoyed classic Okinawan rice balls (Pork Tamago Onigiri) and selected beautifully marbled Ishigaki Wagyu beef for the shop to prepare, awakening our senses with its exquisite flavors. Kokusai Street, now quiet in the daylight, revealed a simpler charm. Next, we visited Seirai-in (Daruma Temple), a serene retreat far from the bustling temples of Taiwan. We were delighted to exchange for two "not-for-sale" Daruma coin purses, a unique token of good fortune. Our third visit to Senaga Island followed, where the white buildings and blue sea reminiscent of Greece provided a picturesque backdrop for enjoying soft, sweet pancakes with family. The afternoon was dedicated to the kids at Onoyama Park, where thoughtful public design ensured parents could relax in shaded areas while watching their children play. Returning the car, Naha Airport became our final shopping destination. Although we planned to bid farewell with a meal at 88 Steakhouse, the crowds led us to skip it. Twin room with an ocean view terrace The room was very spacious and bright, and you can see the ocean from the terrace. I received a welcome cookie 🍪 The coffee machine and drip coffee options were well-equipped. The toilet and bathroom are separate, and the bathroom was spacious and comfortable. Guests can use the outdoor and indoor pools at DoubleTree, as well as the indoor pool and fitness facilities at Hilton (I didn’t use them this time). Hilton is just a few minutes' walk away. Additionally, Mihama American Village is right in front of the hotel, making it very convenient to walk there. It was a very comfortable hotel. Seasonal fruits and sea grapes are also more affordable than at tourist spots. Gyokusendo Cave (Free Parking) - About a 30-minute drive away, this natural wonder took tens of thousands of years to form. The underground stalactite cave boasts over a million stalactites. The serene and dimly lit cave is incredibly calming. Outside, there are various cultural exhibits showcasing Okinawan traditions, such as traditional instruments and glassblowing performances. Those interested in Okinawan culture might spend a long time here. (Note: Closing time is 4:00 PM, so plan your visit accordingly to avoid missing out on key attractions.) Initially, we planned to visit the DMM Aquarium afterward, but we were too tired and decided to postpone it to the next morning. Day 2: Northern Naha DMM Aquarium (Free Parking) - This is a new aquarium in Naha. Unlike traditional aquariums, the DMM Aquarium features semi-open shallow pools with simulated ocean waves and lighting effects, making you feel like you’re on a beach. In addition to marine life, there are land animal exhibits and limited feeding experiences. I tried feeding a sloth this time—it was so adorable, slowly reaching for a piece of carrot while hanging from a tree. Pokemon Center (Free Parking) - Located in Aeon Mall, the Pokemon Center needs no introduction! Although it’s not as large as the one in Osaka, it was enough for a fan like me to spend all my travel budget there! Nakagusuku Castle (Free Parking) - The ruins of the ancient Ryukyu Kingdom, located on a hill, offer panoramic views of the eastern and western regions. The stone-built ruins exude a strong sense of history. Shurijo Castle (Prefectural Paid Parking) - Unfortunately, the castle was previously damaged by fire, so we saw the reconstruction in progress. Side note: There are many adorable cats and ducks nearby. Day 3: Onna Village/American Village Blue Cave Diving (Parking provided by the diving company) - The most recommended activity! Diving in Okinawa is a must. Once underwater, you’ll see vibrant tropical fish that you’d only see in movies or games. If you’re not comfortable with scuba diving, snorkeling is also a great way to enjoy the stunning underwater scenery. Cape Zanpa Lighthouse (Free Parking) - One of the few lighthouses in Japan you can climb. From the top, you get a nearly 270-degree view of the ocean—absolutely breathtaking! American Village (Both free and paid parking available, but it gets crowded after sunset) - The most beautiful spot! This place feels like a parallel universe with American-style architecture and people from all over the world. It gets lively after sunset, with music playing everywhere, neon lights on the buildings reminiscent of 70s and 80s America, street performances, and fireworks. It’s a place you won’t want to leave. Day 4: Nago City Nago Pineapple Park (Free Parking) - A pineapple-themed botanical park, perfect for family activities. They also sell pineapple-related snacks and drinks—I regret not buying more! Churaumi Aquarium (Free Parking) - This is probably the most famous attraction in Okinawa besides Kokusai Street. While the overall experience was good, I found the DMM Aquarium’s presentation more innovative and interesting. Churaumi Aquarium is often crowded, making it hard to take good photos. Some exhibits require queuing, which can feel a bit overwhelming. Day 5: Northernmost Okinawa, Return Car in Naha Cape Hedo - The northernmost point of Okinawa, about 50 km from Nago City. If the weather and your energy allow, it’s a great spot to watch the sunrise. The eastern side is completely unobstructed, offering a clear view of the sun rising from the sea. Unfortunately, it was raining heavily during my visit, so I could only take a quick photo. I hope someone else gets to witness the sunrise there! 📍【Must-Visit Attractions】 1. Diving in Okinawa 🤿! I heard there were a lot of gachapon (game machines) there, so I started by playing. There were so many snacks and miniature stationery, I think I ended up winning about ten. There was also a large game center, and a fruit stand in the basement, so I took a look around. I also needed an insulated shopping bag, so I stopped by Daiso, located in Aeon Mall. I've stayed at this hotel four times during my trips to Okinawa because it has a smoking room on the first floor, washer and dryer on the second and fourth floors, and a microwave and free ice on the third floor. (Because we planned to go diving at the Blue Cave the next day, we stayed near Ryukyu Village), and we also made a detour to the magnificent Cape Zanpa. Standing before the white lighthouse, watching the endless waves crash against the rocky cliffs, the sunset casting its glow on the sea. (A 30-minute stop here is just right.) 🏠 Overnight: Around Ryukyu Village ⸻ 🌊 Day 2: Diving into the Blue Cave In the morning, we started with a fantastic café, enjoying coffee and the ocean view – a perfect start to the day. Then came the highlight – the Blue Cave Diving experience! Led by an instructor, we descended into the ocean, and the dreamlike "blue light" was truly an unforgettable sight. The activity ended around 2 PM. After showering and changing back at our guesthouse, we headed to the magnificent Manzamo. Standing on the cliff overlooking the waves and Elephant Trunk Rock, the blue of Okinawa is truly addictive. Dinner was at the super popular "Ryukyu no Gyū" restaurant. The beef was so tender it melted in your mouth – a beef lover's paradise! 🏠 Overnight Stay: Onna Village ⸻ 🐠 Day 3: Exploring the Beautiful Sea, Seeking Healing Scenery in the North Our first stop today was the must-see Churaumi Aquarium. Watching the enormous whale sharks swim before our eyes truly felt like time stood still. Next, we headed to Kouri Island. Crossing the magnificent Kouri Bridge, the endless expanse of gradient blue sea was breathtaking. For lunch, we chose the popular "Shrimp Wagon" restaurant. Enjoying fragrant garlic shrimp rice while feeling the sea breeze was pure bliss. In the evening, we drove south to American Village, a place with a distinctly American atmosphere. With its neon lights and shopping streets, it's incredibly lively at night. Entering the cave, we saw spectacular stalactite formations and underground water; the temperature was cool and mysterious. Afterwards, we spent the afternoon eating, drinking, and taking photos on Senaga Island. In the evening, we experienced the super exciting street go-karting! Wearing anime character costumes, we raced along the road, laughing and having fun. Go-karting isn't slow; it's at 70-80 kilometers per hour, a completely different feeling from driving at 70 kilometers per hour! The whole experience took about two hours, with a stop on Senaga Island, meaning we experienced both day and night on Senaga Island. The go-karts even went onto Kokusai Street, making us the center of attention—it felt like driving a sports car and everyone was staring at you! 🏠 Overnight Stay: Kokusai Street ⸻ 🏙 Day 5: Shopping on Kokusai Street → Heading Home On our last day, we indulged in shopping on Kokusai Street, buying souvenirs, brown sugar cookies, and browsing drugstores, bringing our trip to a perfect close. Isn’t that great? 😍❤️ The drinks are also delicious, so I highly recommend ordering a pancake and drink set.✨ The terrace seating offers a stunning ocean view, making this cafe even more charming.🍽️ The pancakes are fluffy and have a gentle, melt-in-your-mouth flavor that is simply exquisite.❤️ You absolutely must visit!

I booked a large room, which was spacious enough to open two suitcases. There's also a balcony where you can enjoy the open sea view and the scenery of American Village. The large bed is comfortable, though the pillows are relatively soft. Overall, I am very satisfied with the service. Amenities like toothpaste, toothbrushes, cotton swabs, makeup pads, razors, etc., are available for self-service near the elevator in the lobby. The hotel is located right by the beach, and it's about a 5-minute walk to American Village. Additionally, Aeon supermarket is just a 1-minute drive away, making it very convenient.
