Botswana🇧🇼 Kazungula - Elephant Trail Guesthouse and Backpackers (📍) Location: 6 km from Kazungula Customs House (50 Pula by taxi), 10 km from Kasane. Located in a village, transportation is inconvenient; access is only possible by car. (🛀) Facilities: I didn't stay in a dormitory; it was the cheapest small standard room. No toiletries or slippers were provided. Shared toilet and shower. No bottled water. The room was small, and the facilities were somewhat outdated. There was a fan but no mosquito net. Hot showers were possible. (👱♀️) Service: The landlady at the front desk was patient and responsible, but her English had an accent, and since my English is poor, communication was extremely difficult. She didn't know how to use translation software, and when I tried to use it for her, she didn't know how either; the voice kept dropping, and she couldn't type or translate using the software. (🍽) Dining: Breakfast was good, with a good mix of meat and vegetables, and drinks. Lunch and dinner were indeed very average. A meal costing 100 pula ($15) without a drink was definitely not worth it. If it weren't for the guesthouse's inconvenient location in the village with no restaurants nearby, I doubt anyone would eat there. Furthermore, there wasn't even a menu for lunch and dinner, just a small blackboard with handwritten English menus that were illegible and poorly written. Look at restaurants and hotels in Asia; they all have menus with pictures. Because tourists come from all over the world, who knows how a dish is made just by its name? It's neither a hyena nor a dog Despite their name, African wild dogs are not related to hyenas (which are closer to cats). They are a unique genus of canids. They differ from domestic dogs in that they have only four toes on each paw (dogs and wolves have five) and no dewclaws. 2. "Painted Wolf" Their scientific name, Lycaon pictus, translates as "painted wolf." Their fur is covered in spots of black, yellow, and white. • Uniqueness: The pattern on each dog's coat is unique, like a human fingerprint. Scientists use this pattern to distinguish individuals within a pack. 3. The World's Most Effective Hunters If the lion is considered the king of beasts, then the African wild dog is the queen of the hunt. • Statistics: Lions are successful in 20-30% of their hunts. For African wild dogs, it's up to 80%. • Tactics: They don't hunt from ambush. They are masters of attrition. They can run at speeds of 50-60 km/h over vast distances until their prey tires. Where to see them? To see them, I went on safari to Chobe National Park in Botswana. There are very few African wild dogs left—approximately 6,000-7,000 individuals. Chobe National Park, Botswana 🇧🇼 The 10,566 km2 park is located in the northeast of the country on the edge of the Kalahari Desert. It is one of the largest concentrations of wildlife in the world. The park is divided into four zones: the Serondela zone, characterized by dense forests; the Savuti Swamp area, where you can see animals coming to drink 🌱; the Linyanti Swamp, characterized by rivers and sparse forests, is home to prides of lions 🦁; the fourth zone, the Nogatsa grassland forest zone, is home to eland. Botswana was rated by Lonely Planet as the best travel destination in Africa. According to research, the Okavango Delta during the rainy season is not cost-effective (a Norwegian guy I met at the hostel said he saw nothing at all). This trip only visited the cheapest safari in Africa, Chobe National Park, but the animals seen during the rainy season were really disappointing. 🌐Visa Smooth application for a visa on arrival at the Kazungula border crossing at the four-country junction near Victoria Falls (300 pula single entry, over 500 pula multiple entries, card payment only). Other airports/land border crossings may not allow entry. The e-visa is quite unpredictable now, not recommended. 🚗Transportation From Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe, it costs $20 by taxi and takes 50 minutes to the border (no carpooling found at noon, so had to charter a car). After entering Botswana, you can walk 2 km or take a taxi for 100 pula to Kazungula town. The taxi driver will stop at the Choppies supermarket in town, where you can exchange money, get a SIM card, and shop. There are no ride-hailing services in the town. Shared taxis to Kazungula or Kasane cost 8 pula. 🏠Accommodation Stayed at the highly recommended Elephant Trail, which has a kitchen and a small yard, with a great environment. Dorm beds are 180 pula, and I stayed in a double room for 310 pula. The downside is the surrounding area is quite desolate. Shared taxis only go as far as the 4ways junction, requiring a 10-minute walk afterward. A private taxi to the hostel costs 40-50 pula. Lunch and dinner at the hostel cost 100 pula; buying groceries and cooking yourself is more economical. 🐘Safari The best value safari in Africa. In Kasane, there are many travel agencies in front of the Spar supermarket. The classic day tour is a 6-hour morning land game drive plus a 3-hour afternoon boat cruise, or you can book them separately. I booked at the hostel for 1300 pula, including lunch and transfers. You can probably bargain for a lower price if you find agencies yourself. 👀Highlights Sunrise land safari to spot the Big Five, and afternoon water cruise to see aquatic animals, experiencing both land and water safaris in one day. Animal visibility during the rainy season is low, especially in the morning land safari where only a few species were seen. Not a single elephant, which Chobe is famous for, was spotted. The afternoon boat cruise was much more interesting, with many hippos and crocodiles seen, and the sunset was beautiful. 🚗Transportation to Namibia Since I didn’t plan to visit the Okavango, I skipped the usual Maun route and took a 9 a.m. daily bus from the Kasane Immigration Office to Katima Mulilo, Namibia, costing 200 pula. The journey takes about 2.5 hours and the border crossing was smooth. My Namibian e-visa had my name reversed (reapplication was rejected saying this visa is valid), which worried me a bit, but the border officer stamped it without even looking. Arriving in Katima at 11:30 a.m., I could take the 2 p.m. bus directly to Windhoek, avoiding the hassle of three transfers in Maun (note this bus is not daily, buy tickets in advance on the Intercape website, 520 Namibian dollars, arriving at 6:30 a.m.). The driver was very kind and took me directly to the bus ticket office. After storing my luggage, I went to get a SIM card and exchange money (all within 200 meters walking distance).

As we drove through the park in a safari vehicle, a large herd of elephants suddenly appeared before our eyes. The sight of small calves following their parents and the entire herd moving leisurely took my breath away. "I can't believe I got to see wild elephants so close...!" I thought, and lost track of time as I gazed at them. The Chobe River in particular is a popular water spot for elephants, where you can see them mud bathing and frolicking. It was a place where you could experience the "real African wilderness," not an artificial environment. Animals I Encountered in Chobe National Park ✅ Elephants 🐘 (Estimated at over 120,000!) Home to the world's highest density of elephants. You can see herds everywhere. The baby elephants frolicking in the water were so adorable I could watch them forever. ✅ Giraffes 🦒 (Their graceful gait was impressive) They slowly moved their long necks while munching on leaves. The sight of them standing alongside a herd of elephants was a truly African scene. ✅ Buffalo 🐃 (Their herd-moving form was impressive) These animals also traveled in large groups, and their power was astounding. Lions, the buffalo's natural predator, also live in the park, so if you're lucky, you might even witness a hunting scene. ✅ Hippos 🦛 & Crocodiles 🐊 (Encountered on the Chobe River Safari) During the evening boat safari, we spotted hippos floating in the river and Nile crocodiles lingering on the shore.
