If you’ve
If you’ve traveled all over Banff and Jasper in search of a more tranquil, yet still magnificent Rocky Mountain line, Nordegg and its surroundings must be on your list! This is not a popular tourist hotspot, but it hides the most mysterious aspect of Alberta winter. Along the David Thompson Highway, every kilometer of beautiful open mountain views, far less traffic and people than Banff and Jasper, winter driving is really relaxing.
What are the highlights? Hiking in Siffleur Falls, pristine landscapes in Kootenay Plains, snow in Crescent Falls, super popular ice bubble check-in at Abraham Lake, and canyoning and ice climbing activities that are only available in winter. Even if you are lucky, you can encounter wild animals on the roadside - this is the first time I have seen a lynx on the side of the highway nearby, and it was definitely a surprise!
Attraction inventory recommendations:
1. Crescent Falls Campground
Address: Unnamed Road, Clearwater County, AB, Canada
This is the secret place of northern Shimizu Prefecture, and once you enter the camp area, you can take a shot with a blockbuster feel. In winter, there are few people. Walking along the frozen stream with snowshoes, you can see the snow-capped mountains in the distance. If you want to take pictures of snowy mountains, it is recommended to choose a sunny day, the light during the day is super beautiful - field proof that using your mobile phone can take pictures of floating snow, ice lakes, snow mountains, minutes brush the circle of friends.
2. Abraham Lake ice bubble check-in
Not far from Nordegg, when the lake freezes in winter, layers of snow-white bubbles form under the ice, making it one of nature’s most stunning winter wonders. Wear warmer equipment, step lightly on the ice, and look at the ice, snow and lake from a distance.
3. Siffleur Falls & Kootenay Plains
For a relaxing hike, check out Siffleur Falls. The trail is open year-round and relatively safe in winter, with valleys, rivers, occasional snow-covered pine forests and occasional animal tracks along the way. Kootenay Plains, on the other hand, is a bit more primitive and feels like a mistake in a northern fairy tale.
4. Designated winter activities: ice climbing/stream descent
If you have time, schedule an ice climbing or canyoning experience at Nordegg, led by a local professional guide. Ice climbing in winter not only challenges oneself, but also has a wider horizon. Many local travel agencies on the market offer reservations.
