Columbus, Ohio: What to See in Just a Few Hours
Columbus was a pleasant surprise on my grand road trip across the U.S. As Ohio's capital and largest city, it’s a place where the business district, campus vibes, sports culture, museums, food markets, and quiet residential areas all blend together seamlessly.
The city is perfect for a road trip if you're looking to explore the heart of "Middle America" beyond the typical tourist traps—think sprawling campuses, historic brick neighborhoods, local eats, wide avenues, and everyday urban life.
Must-sees for your Columbus itinerary:
🎓 Ohio State University
One of the city’s major landmarks. The university feels like a world of its own: the campus, the students, the merch, the fans, and the cult of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Even a quick stroll through the area makes you realize just how central university culture is to Columbus.
🏡 German Village
A historic district with brick houses, quiet streets, and a very charming atmosphere. It’s worth visiting for the architecture, a relaxing walk, and a taste of "Old America." A great choice if you’re looking for a cozier side of the city.
📚 The Book Loft
A 32-room bookstore in German Village. This place is a destination in itself. You can easily get lost among the shelves, tiny rooms, and hidden passages. For fans of atmospheric shops, this is a must-visit.
🎨 Short North Arts District
A neighborhood filled with galleries, restaurants, bars, shops, and iconic glowing arches over the street. It’s best to head here towards the evening when you’re looking for food, a nice walk, and a livelier urban beat.
🍴 North Market
A food market featuring a variety of local vendors. It’s a convenient spot for a quick break: you can grab a bite, try something local, and not waste too much time choosing a restaurant.
🌊 Scioto Mile
A riverfront park in the city center with views of the Columbus skyline. It’s perfect for a walk, photos, and a peaceful way to wrap up your visit. It’s especially easy to add after visiting downtown or North Market.
📌 A quick few-hour itinerary
German Village, The Book Loft, North Market, Short North Arts District, Scioto Mile.
If you have more time, you can add Ohio State University and the museum district.
Columbus really shines as a stop on a road trip: it’s manageable and unhurried, with distinct neighborhoods, that 32-room bookstore, university energy, and the authentic feel of America beyond the big tourist hubs.
