The Emerald of Cantabria: Santander
Azure seas, golden sands, the Royal Summer Palace, and magnificent coastlines—all in the elegant capital of Cantabria in northern Spain!
Known as the "Green Jewel" of northern Spain, Santander embraces the gentle Cantabrian Sea. Stroll along Pereda Avenue, where history intertwines with the blue bay; bask in the sunshine on the golden sands of Sardinero Beach; or visit the Magdalena Palace, once the summer residence of King Alfonso XIII, and experience the legend of this royal retreat.
🏞️ Nature lovers must not miss the newly designated UNESCO World Natural Heritage site—the Costa Quebrada World Geopark. With its rugged rocks and sculpted waves, it is a paradise for hiking and photography, offering a visual feast at every glance.
🚶♂️ Santander is also the starting point of the Camino Lebaniego pilgrimage route, a path rich in faith and history that leads travelers through landscapes of nature and spirit.
🏛️ The city’s Centro Botín contemporary art center, designed by Renzo Piano—the architect behind the Pompidou Center—perfectly blends art exhibitions with stunning bay views; foodies can savor freshly fried squid and Cantabrian cheese at the Mercado de la Esperanza market and street eateries in the city center, letting their taste buds roam between sea and hills.
💬 Additionally, Santander is an ideal place to learn Spanish. Immerse yourself in an authentic language environment, improving your Spanish skills while experiencing the genuine coastal lifestyle of northern Spain.
🚗 For deeper exploration, drive to Santillana del Mar, hailed as one of "Spain’s most beautiful towns," and wander its medieval stone streets to feel the charm of frozen time. The Altamira Cave Museum, a World Cultural Heritage site, is nearby.
You can also visit another "most beautiful town," Comillas, to see Gaudí’s early masterpiece—El Capricho de Gaudí.
🌿 Where mountains meet the sea, elegance meets tranquility—Santander, a coastal secret quietly cherished by Spaniards, awaits you to discover its calm and grandeur!
Best months to visit: May—October

Gaudí and Cantabria's "Whimsical Connection"
When you think of Gaudí, you think of Barcelona; but beyond Barcelona, he also left behind unexpected masterpieces. The most surprising of these may be hidden in the tranquil town of Comillas in the Cantabria region of northern Spain.
Antonio López López, Marquis of Comillas, a 19th-century legendary figure, was a typical los indianos (Chinese can translate as "overseas Chinese") who returned home wealthy from the "New World." He was extremely wealthy and closely connected to the royal family. In his hometown, he built the magnificent Palacio de Sobrellano and also founded the landmark Pontifical University of Comillas. King Alfonso XII once visited here, making this small town famous for a time.
Right next to the Marquis's palace, a colorful building full of natural rhythm stands out—
🎐 Gaudí's early masterpiece · El Capricho
This summer villa, commissioned by another "overseas Chinese," the Marquis's brother-in-law Máximo Díaz de Quijano, is the creative crystallization of Gaudí at age 31:
🌻 Over 6,000 sunflower ceramic tiles bloom toward the light
🌞 The interior flows with changes in sunlight
🎶 Music and nature dance lightly in the space
Although Gaudí had not yet established his mature style at the time, "El Capricho" already showed the seeds of his future creativity. Unfortunately, the commissioner returned home due to illness and lived here for only one week before passing away, making this poetic building his final resting place.
Stepping out of El Capricho and strolling through the alleys of Comillas, you will find—
The entire town is almost wrapped in modernist style, like an open-air museum.
🌿 a land full of endless inspiration
If you think Gaudí belongs only to Barcelona, come to Comillas to see another side of him.

Wandering Through the Quirky Charm of Comillas
#summervacay Comillas is one of those towns where you just wander around with zero plans and somehow stumble on the coolest stuff. It’s got this artsy, old-school vibe but also feels super chill. The streets are full of cute corners, cozy cafés, and some really funky architecture. Like, El Capricho by Gaudí is here, and it totally feels like a surprise in such a small town.
The beach is right there too, and it’s perfect for a quick dip or just laying back with your feet in the sand. You can walk from the beach straight into the town center and grab some tapas without even changing out of your flip flops.
There’s also this random mix of gothic, modernist, and traditional buildings that somehow just works. Every turn has a bit of history or something pretty to stare at. Super walkable, super photogenic, and super laid back. If you’re in Cantabria, Comillas is definitely worth a lazy afternoon or even a full day of slow exploring.
