Conwy travel guide and discussion

My journey to Conwy, Wales felt like stepping straight into a medieval story. The magnificent Conwy Castle, ancient town walls, narrow streets, and historic stone buildings created an atmosphere where every corner seemed to carry a piece of Welsh history. 🏰🌿 Walking through the old town, I loved the contrast between the imposing castle and the peaceful charm of everyday Conwy life. Climbing along the historic walls offered beautiful views across the town, the river, and the surrounding Welsh landscape. What made the experience special was how naturally history blends into the town itself. It didn’t feel like simply visiting a historic site—it felt like wandering through a living piece of medieval Wales. Conwy left me with beautiful views, fascinating history, and the kind of timeless charm that makes you want to slow down and explore every little street. ❤️🏴 #conwycastle #Conwy #ConwyWales #Wales #NorthWales #ConwyCastle #WelshHistory #MedievalTown #WalesTravel #TravelExperience #TravelMemories #ExploreWales #Wanderlust

#backpacking2026 If you find more joy in a misty mountain sunrise than a crowded high street, Wales is your playground. I’m obsessed with how easily you can pivot from urban energy to a quiet village, eventually resting your eyes on a rugged coastline or a weathered castle. And honestly, backpacking here is less about ticking off every attraction and more about leaving some space for the places you didn’t plan to find. 🎒 My Wales backpacking route Day 1 - Cardiff Walk around the city, visit Cardiff Castle and grab food at Cardiff Market. Stay in a hostel. Day 2 - Brecon Beacons Head towards the mountains for a proper countryside day. Pack lunch, walk one of the trails and stay nearby. Day 3 - Betws-y-Coed Travel north, explore the village and spend the afternoon around the forests and waterfalls. Day 4 - Conwy + Llandudno See Conwy Castle, wander around the old town, then finish with the coast at Llandudno. Day 5 - Tenby Head south for colourful streets, beaches and a slower final day by the sea. Places I’d put on the list · Cardiff · Brecon Beacons · Beddgelert · Betws-y-Coed · Conwy · Llandudno · Snowdonia · Tenby · Pembrokeshire Coast 🤯 Things I didn’t expect about Wales · Wales has more than 600 castles. · Snowdonia is called Eryri in Welsh. · You’ll see Welsh and English used together everywhere. · Some of the best experiences are completely free: beaches, viewpoints, villages and hiking trails. 🍴 Food I’d look for · Welsh cakes · Cawl · Bara brith · Welsh rarebit · Fresh seafood around the coast For accommodation, I’d check YHA hostels, local B&Bs and budget guesthouses before booking a city-centre hotel. 🎒 Backpacking tips · Bring waterproofs, even when the morning looks perfect. · Don’t rely entirely on Google Maps for rural public transport. · Keep some cash for smaller cafés and village stops. · Start mountain walks early. · Leave a little room in your itinerary, Wales is made for spontaneous stops. If you had 5 days backpacking around Wales, what would you add, remove or completely change? Drop your route, hidden spots or money-saving tips below, I’m genuinely curious. #backpacking #wales #hiddengems #myitinerary #thingstodo #citydaytours

Tucked away on the quayside in Conwy, North Wales, you'll find what's claimed to be the Smallest House in Great Britain. Honestly, it looks more like something out of a fairy tale than an actual dwelling. This little red house, just 1.8m wide and 3m tall, has a rather wild past. It was lived in until 1900 by a fisherman named Robert Jones, who stood a towering 6ft 3. He had to move out because, well, it was deemed too small to live in. Quite the predicament. You can actually go inside today and get a real sense of just how compact it is. And the best part? It’s incredibly photogenic, especially with the imposing medieval walls and castle of Conwy right there. If you're road-tripping through Wales from London, Manchester, or anywhere else in the UK, make sure to pencil in this unique little spot. You can actually go inside today and get a real sense of just how compact it is. #uk #travel #wales #citydaytours #photospot

Welsh cakes with tea🍰☕ at the mountaintop cafe are a classic British afternoon tea treat. 📸Outfit Suggestions: A white dress + straw hat👒, or a bright sweater with Doc Martens👢, for a vintage Victorian vibe! 💌Tips: Exchange £1 coins in advance (public toilets require payment), wear sturdy shoes (lots of sheep droppings on the mountain), and bring a power bank (you won't be able to stop taking photos)!

Llandudno, a famous holiday destination in Wales, UK, attracts visitors from all over the world with its charming coastline, rich history and culture, and diverse entertainment options. Llandudno Pier is a must-see attraction. Built in 1878, it is one of the longest Victorian piers in the UK. Stroll along the pier to enjoy stunning sea views and explore the shops and cafes. Take the cable car or mountain slide to easily reach the summit and enjoy panoramic views of the city and surrounding scenery. The cable car line, built in 1902, is the only traditional cable car still in operation in the UK. The 1,500-meter journey offers beautiful natural scenery. Whether you want to enjoy natural scenery, experience history and culture, or enjoy entertainment activities, you will find a satisfying experience here.

After visiting England, Scotland and Ireland in the UK, I started telling my friends, “I want to go to Wales!” After my first trip to England, I had an inexplicable yearning for medieval fortresses. But after being in Europe for a while, I couldn’t find any castles similar to the medieval empires in my heart. After my friend promised me that I could drive to Wales, I specifically wanted to go to Conwy Castle. The castle requires tickets, but no reservation is required in advance. Overall, it is not very large, and there are not many tourists visiting. You can enjoy the scenery from different directions by going up the stone steps. You can see the sea, the mountains, the small village next to it, and the train passing through the extended structure of the castle. There is a suspension bridge extending next to the castle. You can look back and take pictures of the entire castle from one end of the suspension bridge. But looking at the introduction to the past history, I feel how fortunate I am to have the tranquility now. Conwy castle - My favourite castle in the UK. #castle #CenturyEmpireCastle #100WaysToTravel

📍 Conwy Castle, Conwy, Wales (1287) Conwy Castle is a textbook example of medieval military architecture. Built in 1287, it features two defensive walls and eight giant towers, making it nearly impenetrable to intruders. Conwy Castle has witnessed many important events in Welsh history, and its design showcases the wisdom and skill of medieval military engineering. 🏰🛡️ 📍 Burg Hohenwerfen, Werfen, Austria (1075) Hohenwerfen Castle is a prime example of medieval engineering, built in 1075. It played a significant role in the conflict between the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor. Its fortifications include a deep well that ensured a water supply during sieges, despite its elevated location. Hohenwerfen Castle stands as both a military fortress and a testament to history and culture. 🏰⚔️ 📍 Alhambra Palace, Granada, Spain (1238) The Alhambra is the only perfectly preserved example of medieval Islamic architecture. Since 1238, it has served as a Moorish palace and fortress. The beauty of the Alhambra reflects the combined contributions of Christian and Moorish art, with intricate decorations and architectural details showcasing the splendor of medieval Islamic culture. 🌟🏛️ 📍 Predjama Castle, Predjama, Slovenia (1202) Predjama Castle, the largest cave castle in the world, dates back to 1202. While much of the structure was built in the 16th century, its underground tunnels were used by the knight Erasmus during medieval marauding expeditions. Predjama Castle is not only a marvel of engineering but also a testament to medieval adventures and legends. 🏰🗺️ #ConwyCastle #BurgHohenwerfen #AlhambraPalace #PredjamaCastle #MedievalArchitecture #HistoricalLandmarks #Travel #History #Culture #Castles #EngineeringMarvels

#valentinescape #foodie #tripblazers Sunday lunch at the castle view pub in deganwy Conwy, right by deganwy castle…the food here is amazing, we had garlic mushrooms to start then a lovely roast beef and Yorkshire pudding dinner with lemon tart and blackberry crumble with cream and ice cream….. delicious!!!!! The staff are fantastic and the food delicious. The pub itself is pretty old fashioned but very clean

The view through the gap in the wall was so picturesque that I couldn't help but take a picture😊 There is a statue of a prince in the square, holding a sword while looking at Conwy Castle. It's really pretty. The town itself is so cute and warm, so it would be nice to look around. #PleaseWinter #Winter #SoloTravel #YearEndTravel #England

The round castle walls are really beautiful. I walked along the coast as if I was taking a walk without going inside, and since it was a nice day for walking, I walked happily. This castle wall is also the one that gave me a very good first impression of Wales. #PleaseWinter #Winter #SoloTravel #YearEndTravel #England

You notice Conwy Castle before you properly reach the town. From the road, or from the train pulling into Conwy, its dark stone towers rise abruptly above the rooftops—huge, weathered, and completely unapologetic about being there. It does not feel like a polite heritage attraction; it feels like a fortress that has been standing guard over the river for more than 700 years. Crossing into the walled town, the castle seems to follow you. Its walls run alongside narrow streets, and every so often a tower appears between houses or above a corner, reminding you that this was once a place built for defence rather than sightseeing. The best first impression is from the quay or the bridge: the castle reflected in the water, gulls circling the battlements, and Snowdonia’s hills softening the horizon behind it. Inside, the scale becomes real. You pass through the outer ward, climb worn stone steps, and suddenly find yourself on the ramparts with wind in your face and views in every direction. The River Conwy stretches below, the town walls curve away toward the hills, and the rooftops of Conwy look almost miniature from above. It is easy to understand why the site was chosen: from here, you can see exactly who is approaching. The towers are the part visitors remember. Some are dark and hollow, with narrow staircases spiralling upward; others open onto unexpected rooms, fireplaces, and windows that frame the sea and mountains. There are plenty of steps, uneven floors, and low passages, so it rewards comfortable shoes and a bit of patience—but the climb is worth it. What surprised me most was how domestic parts of it feel. Beyond the military might, there are remains of a Great Hall, chapel, kitchens, and royal chambers. Standing in those spaces, you can picture the castle not only as a garrison but as a place where kings, officials, soldiers, and servants once moved through the same stone corridors. Allow at least an hour and a half, longer if you like photographing details or simply standing on the walls. Go early if you can, especially in summer, and save time afterward for the town itself: the harbour, the smallest house in Great Britain, fish and chips by the water, and a slow walk along the medieval walls. Conwy Castle is not just something you look at. It is something you move through—up towers, along battlements, through gateways—until the medieval world stops feeling distant and starts feeling unusually close. #travel #Castle #wales #uk #trip

Why Wales, and why NOW? Wales just became the UK’s hottest “coolcation” destination. Trip.com data reveals searches for Welsh hotels are up 65% year-on-year for summer 2026, while rail bookings have surged 37% — outperforming Scotland, Cornwall, and the Lake District combined . Spanish travelers are searching for flights to Cardiff 20% more than last year , and Cardiff Airport expects 46,000 passengers this Easter alone — an 18% increase . But here’s what the algorithm won’t tell you: most visitors rush through Cardiff and Snowdon, and never see the collapsed sea caves, the petrified forests, or the £3.50 cawl where Wales actually breathes. This guide is built for the traveler who wants real value. Save it. You’ll use it. 🚆 TRANSPORT: The £16.40 Ticket That Beats Every Rental Car The mistake starts at Cardiff Airport. Taxis quote £35–50 to the city center. The T9 express bus costs a fraction of that, and once you’re in Wales, the Transport for Wales network is your best friend. Fares on all TfW services are frozen for a year from March 2026 . The combined ticket rule. TfW now sells single tickets that cover both train and TrawsCymru bus — no separate bookings, no fuss. Swansea to Aberystwyth costs £16.40 on one ticket. Cardiff to Brecon runs £18.60. Holyhead to Machynlleth is £15.60 . The Explore Wales Pass. For serious explorers, the Explore Wales Pass gives you unlimited train travel for four days in an eight-day period — plus unlimited bus travel for the full eight days. Adult pass: £169. Child: £84.50 . It covers Arriva Wales, Cardiff Bus, Stagecoach South Wales, and all TrawsCymru services . 🍲 FOOD: The £3.50 Cawl That Beats Every Restaurant Welsh food is not fancy. It’s cawl — a hearty lamb and root vegetable stew, the national dish. It’s Welsh rarebit — melted cheese on toast with ale and mustard. And it’s bara brith — a speckled fruit loaf, best eaten warm with butter. The pub rule. The best value in Wales is at a local pub. A bowl of cawl with bread costs £5–8. A Sunday roast — Welsh lamb, roast potatoes, and trimmings — runs £13.75–17 . A burger and a drink deal at a Greeneking pub is £9.95 . Two mains for £15.45 . Look for the pub with locals at the bar. That’s the one. Must-try, ranked: · Cawl — the national stew. £5–8 at a local pub. · Welsh rarebit — cheese on toast, done properly. £6–9. · Bara brith — the speckled fruit loaf. £2–4 a slice. · Welsh cakes — griddle-baked, eaten warm with sugar. £3–5 for six. · Sunday roast — Welsh lamb with all the trimmings. £13.75–17. The beer rule. Wales has a thriving craft beer scene. A pint at a local pub costs £4–5.50. At a Cardiff bar, expect £5.50–7. Look for Brains — Cardiff’s legendary brewery — or any of the smaller craft breweries that have sprung up across the valleys. 🗺️ HIDDEN WALES: 3 Places Tourists Miss 1. Witches’ Cauldron (Moylegrove, Pembrokeshire) — A collapsed sea cave where you can swim in water that glows magical emerald green in the sun. You can swim straight from the cave out to sea, or access it by kayak through tunnels. It’s a scramble down from the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, but that’s exactly why it remains empty. Check accessibility first — it sometimes closes to protect local seals . 2. Castell y Bere (near Tywyn, Gwynedd) — While tourists queue for Conwy and Caernarfon, locals know that Castell y Bere is Eryri’s most enchanting castle. Built by Llywelyn the Great in the 13th century, it stands on a windswept crag surrounded by flat, fertile pastures. The atmosphere of history is pervasive, almost crushing. Tread lightly. Don’t stay too long . 3. Machynlleth (Powys) — Named by Time Out as one of Europe’s most underrated destinations for 2026, this market town sits at the edge of the UNESCO-protected Dyfi Biosphere — a rich tapestry of marshes, woodlands, waters, and wildlife. It’s also where Owain Glyndŵr set up Parliament in 1404 as the last true Prince of Wales. The town hosts an annual comedy festival and has a modern art museum housed in a chapel . And for the foodies: it’s home to Ynyshir, Wales’ only two-Michelin-star restaurant . Honorable mention: The submerged forest at Ynyslas and Borth — tree stumps up to 5,000 years old, preserved in peat and visible at low tide. Walk down the beach and touch them. Imagine the world as it was . 💰 BUDGET REALITY CHECK Wales is moderate for the UK — cheaper than London, similar to northern England, and far more affordable than Cornwall in peak season. · Budget traveler: £50–75 per day — hostel dorms, pub meals, TfW trains and buses. · Mid-range traveler: £100–160 per day — private rooms or B&Bs, restaurant meals, occasional taxis. · Luxury traveler: £250+ per day — boutique hotels, fine dining, private transfers. · Cawl (local pub): £5–8. · Sunday roast: £13.75–17. · Welsh cakes: £3–5 for six. · Pint (local pub): £4–5.50. · TfW combined ticket (Swansea–Aberystwyth): £16.40. · Explore Wales Pass (adult): £169. Realistic daily budget: £50–160 depending on your style. Budget travelers can stay under £75 with hostels, pub meals, and TfW trains. Mid-range travelers spend around £130 with private rooms and occasional restaurant meals. 🙏 ETIQUETTE: 5 Unspoken Rules That Matter Wales runs on warmth, poetry, and a deep sense of hiraeth — a longing for home that never quite leaves you. These aren’t tourist rules — they’re how the country works. 1. Say “Bore da” or “Prynhawn da.” Welsh is a living language, and even a basic attempt is appreciated. “Bore da” means good morning. “Diolch” means thank you. “Os gwelwch yn dda” means please. In North Wales especially, Welsh is the first language for many — using it opens doors. 2. Don’t call it “England.” Wales is not England. It’s a country with its own language, its own parliament, and its own identity. Calling a Welsh person English is a genuine insult — even if unintentional. 3. Respect the hills. Snowdon is Yr Wyddfa in Welsh. The national park is Eryri. Use the Welsh names when you can — locals notice, and they appreciate it. And follow the Countryside Code: close gates, take your litter home, don’t disturb livestock. 4. The pub is a community hub. Don’t just drink and leave. Talk to people. Ask about the local area. Welsh pubs are where stories are told, songs are sung, and strangers become friends. If someone offers to buy you a pint, accept it — and return the favour. 5. Tipping is appreciated, not mandatory. Around 10% for good service in restaurants. Leave it in cash on the table. For taxis, round up. For tour guides, £5–10 per person per day. 💾 SAVE THIS POST IF: · You’re planning Wales in 2026 — it’s the UK’s hottest “coolcation” destination, with hotel searches up 65%. · You want to swim in the Witches’ Cauldron and eat cawl for £5 before the crowds find it. · You believe the best travel intel comes from real experience, not recycled top-10 lists. Travel | Castle During my trip to the UK, I took a little detour to Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 D1 Zip World Fforest | Wales About a 3.5-hour drive from Southern England. Grabbed Burger King for lunch on the way 🍔 Then continued the drive to Zip World Fforest. The Forest Coaster gives you three rides, so I had a blast! They even film you, and you can buy the video online if you like it—it's such a great souvenir 🫶🏻 I heard they have a Zip Safari too; I'm curious about that one. After all the fun, I got back in the car and just kept driving. As soon as the road signs became unreadable... I knew the Wales vibes were really kicking in, lol. Reached my destination in the evening. Had dinner and went to bed early to prep for tomorrow. Sightseeing in Wales finally starts tomorrow! First, I soaked in the views from the Great Orme Summit 👀 The weather was perfect, and the sky was so blue! On the way down, I stopped at the Great Orme Mines. The underground exploration was way more interesting than I expected. Spent about an hour there, including the wait time. 📝 I bought a round-trip tram ticket, but if you're visiting the Great Orme Mines, walking back down might have been a better idea 📝 After that was the part I was looking forward to most: The Alice in Wonderland Town Trail. The tourist center sells official maps for a fee, which I highly recommend if you want to see everything 🙌🏻 I tried to find them just using Google Maps, and it took forever. I probably only found about 1/3 of them, lol. D3 Conwy Castle | Aber Falls For my final day in Wales, first stop: Conwy Castle! Built by King Edward I in the 13th century, it still features massive walls and eight towers today. This medieval castle looks incredibly powerful even from a distance. I climbed the towers to take in the views of Conwy’s sea, mountains, and town. Though with eight towers to climb, I couldn't make it to all of them, lol. Afterward, I picked up some Welsh cakes from Popty Conwy Bakery for a light hike. Headed to Aber Falls, which has great access. Mountains, forests, rivers, and a massive waterfall. Everywhere I looked felt uniquely Welsh—I got to enjoy nature until the very last second! It was a short trip, but I’m so glad I went 🫶🏻 📷 1-3, 9: Alice in Wonderland Town Trail 📷 4: Welsh Cakes (a representative local snack) 📷 5-6: Great Orme Mines 📷 7: A shot taken from the Great Orme Tramway 📷 8: Conwy Castle 📍 Alice in Wonderland Town Trail Town Hall, Lloyd St, Llandudno LL30 2UP, UK 📍 Great Orme Tramway Victoria Station Victoria Station, Church Walks, Llandudno, North Wales, LL30 2NB, UK 📍 Conwy Castle Rose Hill St, Conwy LL32 8AY, UK 📍 Popty Conwy Bakery 4 Castle St, Conwy LL32 8AY, UK

Incredibly beautiful place, mesmerising views.

I took the day tour of North Wales from Chester, and Frank was our guide. He shared a lot of fascinating insights about all the places on our route and kept us engaged throughout the long day with his interactive style. Although the stops were relatively short, they allowed enough time to experience the highlights of each location. Llandudno was beautiful, and the standout for me was Conway with its awe-inspiring castle. Despite my limited mobility, I faced no issues as the places we visited had plenty of seating and some delightful cafes—special mention to Seymour’s in Llandudno! It was a long but wonderful day. The valley in Snowdonia National Park was breathtaking, and I got some incredible photos. The day's timing was well-maintained, so we didn’t run late—except for some traffic on the return, which was beyond anyone’s control. Overall, a great day and truly fantastic value for money. Highly recommend!

Located in North Wales, Conwy Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval military fortresses in Europe. This majestic stronghold was built by King Edward I of England between 1283 and 1289 to suppress Welsh uprisings and consolidate his rule. Along with its surrounding town walls, it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nestled between the mountains and the water, the castle sits on a rocky promontory along the River Conwy. This natural geographical advantage made it an impenetrable iron fortress. The main structure was built from local gray limestone, and its design represents the crowning masterpiece of the medieval master builder, James of St. George. The castle's most striking feature is its eight massive round towers, neatly arranged around the inner and outer courtyards. From a distance, the towering structures and continuous defensive walls intertwine, exuding an imposing presence and a profound sense of history. Wandering through the castle, you can climb to the top of the towers to take in breathtaking views of the historic town of Conwy, the sparkling river, and the magnificent mountains of Snowdonia in the distance. The interior preserves the ruins of the Great Hall, the royal apartments, and the chapel, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of past royalty. Conwy Castle is far more than just a cold military machine; it is a vital witness to Britain's medieval history. Whether you are a history buff or a photography enthusiast, its classical, weather-beaten atmosphere makes it an absolute must-visit.

A super rewarding half-day trip to Conwy! We decided to start from Llandudno Junction station and walked all the way across the bridge. It didn’t take long before the magnificent Conwy Castle came into view—so spectacular! The water was dotted with countless floating sailboats, making the view even more picturesque. To top it off, we must have stumbled into a local festival today because everyone was dressed up as pirates! Such a fun, lively atmosphere. 🏰⛵️🏴☠️ Tips: Walking from Llandudno Junction across the bridge offers the absolute best panoramic views of Conwy Castle and the harbor. It takes about 15-20 minutes and is highly recommended over just taking the train straight in! #conwy #travel2026 #travel
