Balos Lagoon | A Miracle of Crete, Greece
It's a 2-hour drive, with over half an hour spent bumping along dirt roads, and after reaching the parking lot, you still need to continue on foot. Even in late October, Crete is very hot, with the sun shining brightly, and nothing but barren land as far as the eye can see.
On the way there, we all thought to ourselves, "What kind of place is this? We haven't seen any trace of beauty." Until we rounded the cliff, and suddenly, before our eyes, was the lagoon's azure blue, distinct from the sea. Wow, it appeared! This kind of scenery truly doesn't disappoint.
The Mediterranean winds blow, and the deep blue sea is separated by a sandbar. Here you see the sea meeting the sea, yet not encroaching upon each other. It's like a wonder touched by God's hand; I've seen this beautiful spot on Earth again! ✌🏻
🌖 —— Transportation Guide —— 🌔
Balos Lagoon is located in the northwest corner of Crete, and transportation is very inconvenient. Those planning to go by public transport can directly dismiss that idea.
You can choose to join a day tour or drive yourself. Day tours can be found by searching for the location on Google Maps; you can compare prices yourself (but it's not cheap, labor in Europe is valuable, and the cost of enjoying guide and driver services is very high).
Regarding car rental: Greece does not recognize "Chinese driver's license translations" and only accepts those holding an "International Driving Permit." However, if you go to rent a car, the rental company might not check your license, so you can pick up the car without issues. ⚠️ But if something happens, you will be driving without a license, [all insurance will be invalid, and you will have to pay all accident costs out of pocket].
Secondly, car rental companies on the island will all state [vehicles are not allowed on unpaved roads]. ⚠️ If an accident occurs on an unpaved road, insurance will be invalid, you will have to pay all accident costs out of pocket, and you may face fines from the rental company.
The last ten kilometers or so to Balos are unpaved roads, but the road condition is good; apart from being very bumpy, there is no damage to the vehicle. If you drive carefully and nothing happens, then it's okay. If, unfortunately, something does happen, it is recommended that you bite the bullet and drive back to a paved road, then pretend the accident happened on the paved road, otherwise, you won't have a good outcome. But at the same time, be aware that as soon as an accident occurs, they will check your driver's license. If you don't have an International Driving Permit, it's best to hope nothing happens, otherwise, nothing will be reimbursed, and huge expenses await you.
We had an International Driving Permit, so we could drive normally, and nothing happened on the way, so we arrived at the lagoon parking lot normally. After arriving, you still need to walk for about half an hour. The road condition is fine, just a normal mountain dirt path with rocks and soil. Even a lazy person like me can tolerate it; you'll get there by walking.
It is also recommended to bring enough water, as Crete is very hot, and you will be very thirsty after walking back and forth. Additionally, you can bring flip-flops 🩴 and a swimsuit; playing in the lagoon is also excellent!
Wishing everyone a happy trip to Crete! 🐟
