2026 Croatia Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in February)

We traveled during the off-season, and our route avoided popular cities, so there were very few people. Croatia is currently in my personal Europe Top 5! If you prefer a packed schedule, you don’t need this many days; each town is small and can be explored in half a day to one day. ⚠️ If you want sea activities or water sports, definitely go in summer (check the timing) because there were none when we went. ⚠️ The advantage of the off-season is cheaper prices + fewer people (no sea trips available). . 【About Transportation】 🚌 We used buses for the entire trip because Croatia’s train network is not well developed and has limited coverage. 🚌 Bus tickets can be bought on-site, which is more flexible. Northern and Istrian Peninsula: Fairytale Landscapes and Roman Traces (Zagreb, Pula, Rovinj) After taking in Zagreb's charming St. Mark's Cathedral, a perfect contrast awaits as you head west to the Istrian Peninsula. Pula's amphitheater is so magnificent that you don't even need to travel to Italy to admire its grandeur. The coastal town of Rovinj is brimming with romance in every alley. Sitting at a harborside cafe at sunset, sipping coffee while gazing at the crimson sea and bell tower was the ultimate healing experience of the trip. Central Inland and Coast: Fairy Lakes and Waves (Plitvice Lakes, Zadar) Plitvice Lakes National Park is a place where you'll be completely captivated by the crystal-clear emerald waters, almost as if fairy tales could leap out of it. [Tip] There are various routes, but choosing one that begins downstream and works its way upstream allows you to continue your walk facing the waterfalls, making for a much better photo opportunity. Afterwards, I descended to the coast and sat on the marble steps of Zadar's "Sea Organ," gazing blankly at the horizon while listening to the natural sounds of the waves crashing in. It was an unforgettable experience. Southern Dalmatia: The Refreshing Sea and the Magnificent Walls (Split, Hvar, Dubrovnik) Passing through Split, where the imperial palace has become a daily routine, and heading south, the true beauty of the Adriatic unfolds. The harbor of Hvar, especially, seen from the hilltop fortress, was a breathtaking example of the Mediterranean's freshness. In Dubrovnik, the final stop of the journey, a tour of the city walls is a must. Plitvice Lakes National Park is a natural wonder. With 16 interconnected lakes and numerous waterfalls, the scenery is breathtaking. Croatia's beaches are also stunning, with blue waters and white sands blending perfectly for relaxation. Croatia is a country where history, nature, and relaxation coexist.

I spent a day in Zagreb, the main city of Croatia and it was way better than I expected. I started in the Upper Town, walking around St Mark’s Square and the old streets, which feel quiet but really pretty. Then I went down to Ban Jelačić Square where the city feels busy and full of life. Everything is close, so I walked most of the day. What makes Zagreb different is how chill it feels for a capital city. It is not packed with tourists and it feels very local and real. I stopped at Dolac Market to try fresh fruit and snacks, which was fun and cheap. For food, I had ćevapi with bread and sauce at a small local place and it was simple but really good. I stayed in a budget hotel near the centre, which was clean and easy. Check out the city parks in the evening. Locals hang out there and the vibe is relaxed and friendly.

Maybe because it's the off-season in winter and also the Christmas holiday, there are very few same-day round-trip buses from Split to Trogir. In the morning, there's only one bus (less than 40 minutes one way, really close). I went on Christmas Eve, 12/24, and arrived in Trogir before 8 a.m. 😂 The whole city was still asleep. But with fewer people at this time, it was really great for strolling and taking photos!! 📸 The weather was rainy and sunny alternately, which felt quite atmospheric~ Trogir Old Town is also listed as a World Cultural Heritage site. Definitely worth a visit~ Game of Thrones was also filmed here 🎞️ The island’s right-angled street layout, exquisite Romanesque churches ⛪️, and short Baroque-style buildings make the city’s scenery uniquely charming. By noon, the once empty streets suddenly came alive again 😂 It felt like the locals all gathered in the old town, and the Christmas open-air concert began 🎶 Following the music, there wasn’t even an empty table at the venue~ Croatia really suits this kind of relaxed city walk 🇭🇷 You can play wherever you go without rushing to check in. Although many restaurants were closed or didn’t serve full meals during the holiday❗️ We found the simple meals we bought at the supermarket by the pier delicious, especially the roasted chicken wings!! 📝PS!! I didn’t get to go up the bell tower of St. Lawrence Cathedral or Kamerlengo Castle! That’s the downside of coming during the holidays—you can feel the strong Christmas atmosphere, but there will definitely be some regrets. 🌊 It wasn’t very cold in winter either, around 15-16 degrees Celsius at noon, with little temperature difference. I walked through the stunning old town of Duvrognik, Croatia! The cityscape, reminiscent of Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, and Attack on Titan, never got boring, even if I looked at it all day. It felt like I was in a storybook. ✨Things I enjoyed Riding the cable car to get a panoramic view of the beautiful city from above! Enjoyed a leisurely swim in the storybook Baltic Sea.🏊♂ Walking along the city's outer walls gave me a clear understanding of the city's historical background, as it was protected by walls. The view of the city overlapping with the sea was truly beautiful! The cliffs and low fences are a bit steep, so be careful if you're afraid of heights! I stayed at an Airbnb in the heart of the old town, and felt like a resident of this beautiful city. 🚌About transportation from the airport to the city I recommend using the airport shuttle bus (Platanus, official shuttle bus). You can buy tickets at the airport, but it's safer to buy them through the booking website! The bus departs 20 minutes after your flight arrives. It will wait for you if your flight is delayed. The bus stops at different locations when heading from the airport to the Old Town and when heading from the Old Town to the airport. Be careful.

Entry to the market is free. How to get there: ✈ Fly to Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) → Take a bus/shuttle or taxi to Old Town (~30 min). Rough cost per day: ~€70–€140. Who will love it: Culture and photography lovers, as well as those seeking romantic strolls. 3️⃣ Ljubljana, Slovenia – Classic Christmas Market What to expect: Explore Christmas markets with stalls on Prešeren Square, Breg, and near Ljubljana Castle, offering crafts, mulled wine, local food, and festive lights throughout December. How to get there: ✈ Fly to Ljubljana Airport (LJU) → Take a bus or taxi into the city (~30 min). Rough cost per day: ~€70–€150. Hvar is known as Lavender Island, and the lavender blooms in July, but unfortunately, that wasn't the time. Hvar town is truly a beautiful resort destination; strolling through it was very relaxing. After lunch, we climbed the Spanish Castle for a panoramic view of the sea.
