Ready to ditch the Scottish crowds, but still want the must-see landscapes? This itinerary takes you off the busy bus tours and straight into misty mountain views, epic movie locations (hello, 007 castle 🚗), and moody old bridges perfect for your camera roll 🌉. From Spean Bridge’s heroic memorials to Isle of Skye’s windswept statues, every stop is a slice of Scotland’s quieter, wilder side.
Top Spots to Visit for a Crowd-Free, Epic Scotland:
1. Spean Bridge - Commando Memorial (PH34 4EG): Open 24/7, this peaceful site honors WWII commandos. Grab a misty sunrise pic with Ben Nevis in the background.
2. Ben Nevis Viewpoint (B8004, PH34 4EG): A quick roadside stop, rarely crowded, with dramatic Highland vistas (cloudy or sunny, it’s always stunning).
3. Glenfinnan Viaduct & Viewpoint (PH37 4LT): Visit early or just before sunset to get that classic ‘Harry Potter train’ shot minus selfie sticks.
4. Isle of Skye - Collie and MacKenzie Statue (IV47 8SW): Appreciate local legends, and walk along the Sligachan Old Bridge for those atmospheric stone-bridge-over-stream photos.
5. Eilean Donan Castle, Dornie & Kyle Lookout: The ultimate iconic 007 & “Braveheart castle”—photograph from the Kyle viewpoint for that cinematic, lonely-castle-on-the-loch vibe.
6. Inverness - Urquhart Castle Cafe (8HF4+H7, Strone, IV63 6XL): Warm up with homemade soup, local cheese toasties, and sweet views over Loch Ness—without the Insta-mob.
Travel & Food Tips:
– Rent a car for total flexibility—public transit here is limited, and you’ll want to stop often.
– Scottish weather = Unpredictable. Pack layers and waterproofs, even in June!
– Urquhart Castle Cafe is a gem for simple, hearty food. Try the scones with jam and a classic cuppa.

Kilchurn Castle is a ruined castle located on a peninsula that spans across Argyll and Bute in Scotland.
Kilchurn Castle 🏰 was once the residence of the Campbell clan, a prominent Scottish family. However, it seems to have fallen out of use since the 17th century.
There’s a certain melancholic charm to it, yet it feels like it has seamlessly blended into nature while still standing strong.
Scotland is home to many castles and palaces, but historical spots like this are truly fascinating 🏴.

Saint conan kirk was voted the top 10 buildings in Scotland of the last 100 years in 2016. The nearest train station is at Loch Awe from there which is 1 kilometers 15 minutes walk, you also can take bus 976 from Inveraray to here. St conan was built between 1881 and 1886 by Walter Campell. It is exceptional both in style and surroundings, with a strong sense of peace and inherent spirituality. The entrance is by donations, you can have the old feeling inside.

Kilchurn Castle is a ruined structure at the northeastern end of Loch Awe in Argyll and Bute Scotland. It was built in the mid 1400, but was badly damaged by my mother nature lightning in 1760.There no public transport over there, the nearest station is Loch Awe then walk around 3 kilometers 35 minutes. The castle currently is surrounded by metal gates, so the interior part cannot be viewed, but you still can walk around the exterior surrounding.

The Scottish Highlands have always been a tourist destination for tourists. In order to catch a sunrise, I will leave for Kilchurn Castle at 6 o'clock. Although it is about 10 minutes away from the hotel, since the castle is in the lake, it can only be seen from the other side of the lake.
I didnt expect to have a sunrise at all, or say the day. Its in the opposite direction, and theres a lot of clouds over there, so its not too much to have a sunrise. To get to the river, you have to turn over the fence. There is a gap in the fence, there are steps, let the tourists cross over, then go to the left along the fence, and then pass through a fern to get to the river. Never cross the fence and go straight to the lake. If it rains, the road is muddy and can't get through.
To the lake, there is a unique fern in Scotland that turns golden yellow in the fall, and this fern is spread throughout Scotland. This picture was taken from the castle back, because at that time the sun just rose and took photos.
