This is a world famous Buddhist shrine and a well-known scenic area in China, is located at the eastern foot of Yuquan Mountain, 12 km away from Dangyang City, an ancient battlefield of Three Kingdoms, Changbanpo. The Yuquan Taoist Temple is currently one of a handful of temples throughout China that continues to support a clergy and as such it represents a real hidden gem within the city of Tianshui. Although the temple does charge entry, it is an active house of worship and should be treated with respect. This colossal temple complex sprawls up the mountainside of the nearby Tianjing Mountains. Since the temple hasn't been developed for tourism and is predominantly used by the local people, it is incredibly peaceful and offers a real insight into how people in China continue to follow the indigenous religion of Taoism. As you wander through the temple, you'll come across several trees that are hundreds of years old, some of which are over 1,000 years old! Since the temple was originally built during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), many of these trees predate its construction but have been beautifully incorporated into the temple complex. The temple itself is a wonderful amalgamation of natural and man-made elements, with breathtaking architecture perfectly complemented by beautifully maintained gardens. I noticed that many of the Taoist priests were busy carrying water between the halls or cleaning, as they are fiercely dedicated to the maintenance of the temple. Be sure not to miss the Dai Temple, which is located in a completely separate part of the temple complex near the main entrance and was constructed during the Qing Dynasty, making it the youngest part of the temple. This section of the temple is home to a gruesome display of statues that are designed to represent the many tortures that immoral people will face in the underworld, which is highly unusual in Chinese temples of this kind. The mountain air is fresh at dawn, and after worshipping, you can leisurely stroll back to the guesthouse—so comfortable you won’t want to leave. The rooms are fully on point! They maintain the previous standard: spacious and airy, with quality soft furnishings. Outside the window is a sea of green, and lying in bed staring at the mountain view is incredibly healing—no disappointments here. But the downsides are really frustrating 😓 For a price over 1000 RMB, the value is honestly just average ❌ Service is consistently disappointing: staff seem distracted the whole time, it takes ages to get a response to questions, their attitude is perfunctory, and it feels like they haven’t been trained at all. Zhang Juzheng Mausoleum is located about 3 kilometers outside the East Gate of ancient Jingzhou City. It is small in scale, free to enter, and very quiet in the morning, mostly frequented by local residents exercising. Parking nearby is difficult; there is a parking lot on the east side but spaces are rarely available. 2. Wanshou Pagoda was originally built during the Ming Dynasty and is situated on Guanyin Cliff by the Yangtze River. From Guanyin Cliff, you can see the Jingzhou Yangtze River Bridge. The vast Yangtze River is dangerous at Jingjiang due to the terrain of Jingzhou, which historically caused frequent floods in this section of the river. This area is the first plain after the Yangtze River flows out of the Three Gorges and leaves the surrounding mountains. Gong'an County in Jingzhou still serves as a flood diversion area during flood seasons. Because of this, flood control embankments have been continuously repaired and raised over the years, making Wanshou Pagoda the only sunken-style pagoda, with its third level roughly level with the ground of Guanyin Cliff. Visitors can now enter the pagoda from inside; the stairs are low but very narrow, allowing only one person at a time. There are few tourists in the off-season, providing a good experience, but queues may form during peak season. 3. Taihui Temple is located about 2 kilometers outside the West Gate of the ancient city. Although not far from the city, the surrounding area is quite desolate and transportation is inconvenient. If driving, the West Ring Road at the entrance is under construction and difficult to pass. Cars can be parked on the land outside the southern mountain gate. Taihui Temple was the palace of Zhu Bo, the twelfth son of Ming Dynasty founder Zhu Yuanzhang and King Xiangxian of Xiang. It was later converted into a Taoist temple and is one of the three major temples in Jingzhou. To the west of Taihui Temple is the tomb of King Xiangxian. The mountain gate is closed, so entry is from the west side where a person collects a 5 yuan entrance fee at a table. However, the area around Taihui Temple is currently under renovation with new buildings being constructed, making it somewhat messy. The temple is built on a high platform and is not large; after climbing up, no one else was seen. With ongoing construction inside and outside the temple, the visiting experience is poor. 4. Xiongjiazhong Chu King Chariot and Horse Array is located about an hour’s drive northwest of ancient Jingzhou City. There is a daily shuttle bus from the city. This time, driving from Taihui Temple, we took Jingying Line and Jingdang Tourist Highway, which took about 50 minutes. Jingying Line passes through some villages and towns, with some sections lined by red cedar trees as shown in P11, offering beautiful scenery. Jingdang Tourist Highway is wide, with few cars, and easy to drive. The rulers of southern China during the Warring States period were surnamed Xiong. The chariot and horse array is the tomb of an early Chu King, excavated in 2006, and is the largest excavated tomb in Hubei Province. The scenic area mainly includes the sacrificial tomb, chariot and horse pits, and an exhibition hall for unearthed artifacts. The overall scale is not large and can be explored on foot. 5. After visiting the Chu King Chariot and Horse Array, you can either head directly to Yichang for your return trip or detour to Dangyang to see Guanling, the tomb of Guan Yu, and the Changbanpo site.
