We travelled 1.5 hours from Libo to Danzhai to experience batik art first-hand; a craft inherited through generations among the Miao ethnic group. While we were disappointed that it wasn’t the intimate workshop we had hoped for in terms of learning more about the history of the craft and the meaning behind the designs and motifs we saw (we were led to a huge open plan room, handed pots of melted wax and told to just get on with it 😆), we loved exploring shops filled with delicately decorated batik prints hidden within the streets of the town, alongside intricate architecture and a street a filled with life. 📍Danzhai, Guizhou, China #leaveyourmark

Danzhai Mercury Mine: A Generation's Memory

Because a relative worked at Danzhai Mercury Mine in the last century, I have always been curious about that era and wanted to experience it for myself. During the National Day holiday, I finally had time after returning from Xingyi, so I drove alone into the depths of the mountains... The Danzhai Mercury Mine Industrial Site is located in Longquan Town and the southern part of Yangwu Township, Danzhai County, Guizhou Province. The Danzhai Mercury Mine Industrial Site is located in a valley with a north-south mountain range and steep terrain. There is no large surface water in the site, but the Yangwu River flows from northwest to southeast through the site into the Sandu Shui Autonomous County and joins the Duliu River system, providing abundant water resources. The geology consists of gray to dark gray thin-layered argillaceous limestone, argillaceous and silty banded dolomite, dolomitic siltstone, and breccia-like thin-layered green rock. Most of the flat land, roads, playgrounds, and walkways in the Danzhai Mercury Mine Industrial Site are cement-hardened, with plane trees and poplars planted along the roadsides. The environment is quiet, with beautiful mountains and rivers, and the buildings and structures are well-preserved. At the Danzhai Mercury Mine Industrial Site, you can see the Lengfan Factory, Sixiang Factory, Soviet Expert Building, Soviet-style brick and wood hospital, smelting workshop, chemical workshop, power workshop... Experience: Walking into the factory, you can imagine the bustling development scene of the time, combined with the TV dramas you have seen before. On the day I visited, several groups of people came to visit, including older people, middle-aged people like me, and young people who looked like college students. I think this is a kind of inheritance! Other: I used Gaode Maps, which kept telling me to turn right after reaching a nearby village, directing me to a small road leading to a group of houses. In fact, you should keep going along the main road (a rural asphalt road) and go down the mountain to the bottom of the valley. Gaode Maps should be corrected.

The third self-driving trip to Guizhou, the most anticipated part was visiting Shiqiao Village to experience ancient papermaking. Before going, Miss 🐒 was still confused and reluctant, but after arriving, she was overjoyed. We were fortunate to meet the intangible cultural heritage inheritors, Mr. Luo and Mr. Yang. The documentary 'Blade in the Deep Mountains' introduces us to the hometown of Chinese batik art, which is known as the first dyeing in the East, the Miao village in the mountains: Paimo Village, Danzhai County, Guizhou Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture. The entire documentary presents the beautiful life rhythm of the villagers in the form of spring, summer, autumn and winter. They believe that humans are part of nature and depend on nature. They worship grains and regard rice as the supreme totem. It is said that if a grain of rice falls and is not picked up, it will be struck by thunder, and this saying is passed down from generation to generation. In summer, everyone here is a master of batik skills, and indigo is the original material for batik craftsmanship. The color soaked out of the indigo will become the pattern color on the Miao costumes. Indigo needs to be soaked in clear water for about a week. The green indigo water carries people's dreams and yearnings for life, and the rice in the fields is really healing. Paimo Village is more than thirty kilometers away from the county town. There is a homestay in the village, which is opened by the batik teacher. The price is affordable and their food is delicious.

The Danzhai gold-mercury mine industrial site, as well as the abandoned prison, is located in Longquan Town and Danwu Township, Danzhai County, Guizhou Province. It is a rich mine hidden in the mountains. The Danzhai gold-mercury mine site has a long history. It is rumored that before the gunpowder was invented, some people were exploited at the site to use the fire and water explosions. According to historical records, during the Tang Dynasty, there were live mercury and silver ornaments produced by Danzhai in the gift of the local toasting court. In July 1940, the Central National Government Resources Committee and the Guizhou Provincial Government Mining Bureau directly managed the Sanhe (Sandu) and Bazhai (Danzhai) mercury mines and opened the 38th Factory. The old scene here is also one of the best places to view. The movie "The Last Night of the Earth" is completed here. Finally, I have time to visit Wanda Town. In fact, the town during the day is not too many people. Compared with many popular places, there is no feeling of crowding. This is also my favorite place in Wanda Town. The town is not only intangible cultural heritage, Miao and Dai culture as the core, but also fully reflects the local characteristics, as well as the world's largest waterwheel, 3000 meters round lake jogging track, four nursery culture theme squares, bird cage post office, etc. There are quite a lot of places to visit, and there are many local snacks! aerial photography for a while, look at the town from another perspective, the round square is really suitable for taking pictures

Like the night of the ancient town, compared to the hustle and bustle of the daytime, there is a light beauty in the night. Therefore, one of the most pleasant things in Wanda Town is to walk in the town after dinner, aimlessly and simply walk. The town has a lantern, but not a lot, it will not look flamboyant. Compared with the daytime, there are indeed a lot less tourists at night, so it feels very comfortable to walk around. Don't you feel it? It belongs to the most peaceful night in Danzhai Town.

Danzhai food recommendation: Miao nationality three-course ace broth soup, Miaojia La Sambo, rice pepper waist. The ace of sour soup is wild grass carp, the meat is delicious, tender and juicy, and served with sauerkraut soup, which is quite sour. Miaojia La Sambo is a platter composed of farmer's own cured meat, sausage and blood tofu. This dish is a must to eat in Miao Village. They are all meaty and firm, and they are a super meal.
