🇺🇸 This route between Niagara and Chicago turned out to be more interesting than I expected
The drive from Niagara Falls to Chicago was one of the most eventful sections of our US route.
The direct route is about 850 km and takes about 8.5 hours. With stops, we covered over 1,000 km: we stopped in Cleveland, Columbus, and the aviation museum in the Dayton area. We reached Indianapolis in the evening, spent the night there, and then drove smoothly to Chicago in the morning. From Indianapolis to Chicago, it took about 3 hours.
📌 Our route looked like this:
Niagara Falls → Cleveland → Columbus → Dayton area → Indianapolis → Chicago
This stretch is best thought of as a separate part of the trip, not just the road between the falls and Chicago. This is where the true American highway experience really comes into its own: long distances, gas stations, signs, wide roads, towns along the way, and the feeling that the country reveals itself beyond its main points.
🌊 Niagara Falls → Cleveland
The first long stretch after Niagara: about 3-3.5 hours of driving.
Cleveland is located on the shores of Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes. For a short stop, you can add downtown, the waterfront, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or just go out to the water and admire the city. I remember Cleveland for its industrial feel: the lake, the port, the railroad tracks, old buildings, and a sense of a vast, inner-Americana.
🏙 Cleveland → Columbus
Then it's about 2.5 hours to Columbus.
Columbus turned out to be a good stopover. It's the capital of Ohio and the state's largest city. Here you can check out German Village, the 32-room The Book Loft, the Short North Arts District, North Market, or the Scioto Mile.
If you want to make your itinerary more comfortable, I would consider staying overnight in Columbus. Then the first day will be easier, and the next day you can easily drive through Dayton and Indianapolis.
✈️ Columbus → Dayton area
It's about 1-1.5 hours from Columbus to the Dayton area.
We stopped at the aviation museum because airplanes and technology were important to our itinerary. Dayton fits well into this type of trip: it's not just a rest stop, but one with a clear message.
For aviation enthusiasts, this is a strong point. For others, it's an option if you want to break up your route with a large museum.
🌆 Dayton area → Indianapolis
The drive to Indianapolis is about 2 hours.
We stayed overnight in Indianapolis, which was convenient: we had time to stroll around downtown in the evening, and in the morning it was an easy stretch to Chicago.
In Indianapolis, for a quick introduction, I recommend Monument Circle, the Indiana Statehouse, and a stroll through downtown. If you have more time, you can add the Canal Walk, White River State Park, or the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
🚗 How to best break up the itinerary
Option 1, like ours: Niagara Falls → Cleveland → Columbus → Dayton area → Indianapolis, overnight in Indianapolis, then drive to Chicago in the morning.
Option 2, more comfortable: Niagara Falls → Cleveland → Columbus, overnight in Columbus, then the next day, Dayton area → Indianapolis → Chicago.
Option 3, the most relaxed: overnight in Columbus and a separate overnight in Indianapolis. This way, you can properly see both cities, rather than just checking them off along the way.
Top tip: don't try to do this route in one go if you want to see something along the way. The road itself is already long, and with stops, the day quickly stretches out.
I liked this stretch specifically for the change of scenery. After Niagara Falls, Lake Erie appears, along with the cities of Ohio, the aviation museum, evening Indianapolis, and then the road to Chicago. It's not just an empty stretch, but a full-fledged section of a larger US route.
