Walking down into the cave is like slowly leaving the bright Western Australian sunshine behind and stepping into something ancient and still. Inside, the formations are stunning. Stalactites and stalagmites grow slowly over thousands of years, creating shapes that look almost sculpted rather than naturally formed. The lighting inside the cave is carefully designed to highlight the textures and shadows, making the experience feel dramatic without losing its natural authenticity. It’s easy to spend time just looking around, noticing details you would normally rush past. By the time you climb back out into the daylight, the contrast is striking. The bright coastal air feels fresher, the landscape feels wider, and you carry a quiet appreciation for how powerful and patient nature can be. We visited Perth during June 2025. It’s winter with some days raining and quite cold for us. We explored Lancelin, Jurien Bay, Green head and Geraldton for the first 3 days. All 3 days raining so we can’t go for sky diving and swim with sea lion trip. After that we head to Margaret river, Busselton and Augusta. Wine tasting at Margaret river, Busselton train and lastly visited Jewel cave. We love Jewel cave and it’s worth the trip to spend half day there. The cafe at Jewel cave also a nice place for lunch. This is a limestone cave. It was born through a natural process that took millions of years. 💡 Causes 1️⃣ The stratum where the cave is located was originally the ocean. The remains of dead plants and animals on the seafloor formed calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), which was gradually compacted into limestone. 2️⃣ Rainwater penetration + acid corrosion: Rainwater mixes with carbon dioxide in the air and soil, turning into weak acid, which penetrates into the limestone and slowly dissolves underground space - the cave itself - over a long period of time. 3️⃣ The formation of stalactites and stalagmites (more than tens of thousands of years): Calcium-containing water droplets that seep into the cave leave calcium carbonate on the cave ceiling to form stalactites, and drip onto the ground to form stalagmites. Eventually some of them will form a "stone pillar" 📝History 1️⃣Discovery time: 1950s Jewel Cave was discovered by local explorers in the 1950s. They entered through a narrow crack, lit a kerosene lamp, and were stunned by the stalactite wonders in front of them. 2️⃣ Opening to the outside world: 1959 After careful development and the installation of trail lighting, Jewel Cave has become one of Australia's most famous tourist caves and is managed by the Cape Leeuwin Conservation Organization. 3️⃣ Protection work: In order to protect this extremely fragile environment, the tour guides in the cave control the number of people, temperature, humidity and lighting throughout the tour to ensure that the stalactites will not be damaged. *️⃣Surprise Features*️⃣ Discovery of thylacine remains The remains of a Tasmanian tiger (thylacine) tens of thousands of years old were found in the cave, preserved in a dry cave without any decay. Do note that the cave visit comprising several flights of stairs but it is an easy climb and you can take your time.
