East Route (enter and exit via Tianjun County): This is the most recommended and easiest route, almost entirely paved, suitable for sedans and city SUVs. The only thing to watch out for is some "wavy roads" and "bomb craters" in the middle section, requiring slow driving, but the road conditions have improved a lot compared to before. The total distance is about 195 kilometers, and driving round trip takes approximately 6-8 hours. South Route (enter and exit via Delingha): The road conditions mainly consist of unpaved gravel roads and bomb craters, making it more difficult. It is recommended for those with off-road or four-wheel-drive vehicles and experienced drivers. This route also offers magnificent scenery but is a huge challenge for both vehicles and driving skills. It is not recommended to take the south route alone. North/West Route: The most difficult, a professional off-road crossing route with extremely poor road conditions. Non-professional teams and hardcore off-road vehicles should not attempt this. 📸 Where to play after reaching the lakeside? There is about 1 kilometer of dirt road from the main road to the lakeside. After this 1 kilometer, you will see the vast lake surface. Here are several good spots to get down to the lake and photo positions: Hala Lake Stone Monument: The end point of the East Route and the most popular check-in spot. It faces Tuanjie Peak directly and is the best place to photograph the "heart-shaped" snow peak, creating a spectacular scene. Prayer Flags and Yurt: About 10 kilometers from the stone monument, you can get down to the lakeside. There are herders' yurts here where you can buy hot water, the only supply point by the lake. The terrain is higher, offering a panoramic view of the entire lake, great for photos. Trailing Sandbar: About 14 kilometers from the navigation endpoint, there is a relatively steep road down to the lake. There is a calm inner lake here, but crossing water pits requires skill. Non-four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles can easily get stuck, so be especially careful. ⚠️ Must-Read Tips Before Departure About altitude sickness: Hala Lake is over 4,000 meters above sea level. Although many people don’t feel it, it’s best to bring an oxygen bottle. Avoid strenuous exercise upon arrival and drinking a bottle of cola can help relieve symptoms. About transportation: Although the East Route is paved, the frozen soil base can collapse, forming wavy roads and bomb craters, so drive slowly. Electric vehicles need special attention; except for Tianjun County, there are almost no charging points along the way, so be sure to fully charge in Tianjun. The South Route is even more challenging, and unpaved roads are tough for fuel vehicles as well. About supplies and equipment: After the Yangkang Township gas station, there are basically no supply points within 300 kilometers round trip. Be sure to fill up fuel in Tianjun or Delingha and bring enough water and dry food. Qinghai’s weather is changeable with large temperature differences; windbreakers, thermal underwear, hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are all essential. About accommodation: There are no formal campsites by the lake. If you want to stay overnight, you can only stay in herders’ yurts (about 500 yuan per room) or sleep in your car. The total distance is about 195 km, round trip driving takes about 8 hours. 1️⃣ Tianjun County -> Yangkang Township: 65 km, speed limit 60 km/h, very good road condition, two-way lanes, full signal coverage 2️⃣ Yangkang Township -> Suli Township T-junction: some shell craters, no lane markings, need to pull over when meeting other vehicles. Near the T-junction there are several big potholes and waves, slow down to avoid scraping the chassis! 3️⃣ T-junction -> Hala Lake: two-way lanes, but many waves on the road.
