I was so happy that I could now afford not just to visit but to live here, and after just a month, I realized I wanted to escape. We couldn't even last a year, and here's why: 🥐 Food. Groceries in the stores are outrageously expensive, plus everything is in short supply and of dubious quality. You can only buy these cucumbers, these breads, these shrimp or squid. Two or three brands is a real choice. You can't go to the store and buy, for example, duck or rabbit meat; they simply aren't available, nor are quail eggs, any fish caviar, cod liver, and a million other items that seem normal these days. The food selection is extremely basic and repetitive. I don't eat chips, but apparently due to the lack of flavors, I wanted to buy a pack. Five or six varieties are spread out on a huge display, and they all either taste like salt (yes, salt) or hot pepper. Tea is only in bags; you can find it in packages here and there, but not in the supermarket. Prices are a whole other story. A 350-gram pack of frozen squid costs €12, a small loaf of bread costs €1.80, a dozen eggs costs €2.80. And it's the same for everything! Even figs, which grow everywhere and are lying around underfoot because for some reason they're not picked, cost €6-7 per kilogram in season. I'm not exactly poor, but in Montenegro, I started paying attention to prices in stores for the first time, because they don't match the value at all. 🧑🔧 Service. The locals live by the motto "Polako," which means tranquility. But to me, it smacks of laziness and a reluctance to move at all. For example, I'm in Vietnam now, and the people there are actually very calm and pleasant, and this doesn't stop them from working. I was shocked when I scheduled a meeting with a local electrician and he simply didn't show up. I rescheduled it for 10 a.m. the next day, but he showed up at 12 noon and couldn't figure out what was wrong. Almost all the locals I contacted and arranged appointments live like this. The only person who was disciplined was the taxi driver, who never let me down. I understand that this is their mentality; they're in no rush, and I'm not judging it; I'm just sharing my emotions and opinions. 🚘 Transportation. If you don't have your own car, it will be very difficult, if not expensive. There's no public transportation, or rather, it sort of exists, but it doesn't follow a schedule and just sort of exists. You shouldn't count on it, especially if you're not staying for a year like we were, but just for a couple of weeks on vacation. Otherwise, you'll just waste a lot of time waiting. Taxi is the only option, but within the city, it's 5-10 euros per ride. For example, I paid almost 6 euros for 2.5 kilometers in May. If you want to travel around the cities: Budva, Kotor, Tivat, Podgorica... you need to budget 40-60 euros one way. 🍽️ Restaurants. Extremely bland, dishes often lack flavor. I'm so unfussy about food that I rarely go to restaurants where the food isn't tasty. It takes real effort. And I understand that Montenegrin cuisine is definitely not my thing. There are good places, for example, for Italian cuisine, but you have to search for them. The prices, of course, are also a bit unreasonable; even in cafeterias like Food Stories, you'll pay 25-30 euros for a modest lunch for three and a child. If it's something with restaurant-like appeal, the bill will be 35-40. Again, that's modest for the food, the decor, and the service! 🚬 Smoking. I can't say people smoke a lot, it's just that it happens in some really inappropriate places. For example, a doctor taking a chest x-ray of your lungs for suspected pneumonia hides a cigarette behind his back. A passenger on a train, not in the vestibule, but just in the aisle with the windows closed, looks your child in the eyes and exhales smoke in their direction. 💊 Dietary supplements. Life is generally very expensive, as is clear from the points above, but there's something completely out of place about this one. If you're used to prices like iHerb, multiply that by 3, no exaggeration. And you can't order, or rather, you can, but every package is subject to a hefty tax, and it's really not worth it. 🏡 Renting a home. Firstly, there are few long-term offers if you want a new, mold-free apartment. Secondly, the price is simply unjustified. For $1,000, you get about 70 meters of a solid mid-range property. If you're used to good conditions, closer to the sea, it's closer to $1,500-$1,700. If you're staying for a couple of weeks, the price is even higher relative to the number of days spent. Overall, people left a pleasant impression; you feel safe in this country, and the crime rate, especially theft, is very low. The nature is incredibly beautiful, with vibrant colors, and the sea is beautiful and clear. For example, Kotor captivated me with its splendor, and I might even want to return for another week. But after just a month, the rural vibe that permeates all the cities, especially at a million-dollar price, plunges me into melancholy. First off, the beaches, yep, Bar’s got that classic Adriatic coastline thing going on. Pebbly, clear water, and super chill. Not too crowded, which was a win. But then you’ve got Stari Bar (Old Bar), and wow, this place is full-on ancient ruins, perched up in the mountains. Walking around crumbled stone walls, mosques, churches, and old houses with epic mountain views? Kinda magical, not gonna lie. The vibe in town is low key, with a mix of modern and old-school. The locals are super friendly, and the cafés along the promenade are perfect for just watching the sea roll in while sipping something cold. #summervacay Nikšić, in Nikšić Municipality, totally flew under my radar until I actually went, and wow, it’s got its own cool vibe. It’s the second largest city in Montenegro, but it doesn’t feel hectic at all. More like a laid-back, slightly rugged town with character. The town square is super open and chill, with locals just hanging out, sipping coffee, and chatting for hours. I joined in, of course, caffeine culture is strong here. Trebjesa Hill is an easy walk if you’re into some light nature and panoramic views, plus there’s a brewery at the bottom. Speaking of that… Nikšićko beer! Yep, brewed right here, and it tastes even better knowing it’s local. Also checked out the King Nikola Palace, it’s now a museum, kinda small but has some neat old-school vibes. It’s not touristy at all, which I loved. Super authentic feel, friendly people, and just an easy place to take it slow. Definitely worth a detour if you’re exploring Montenegro.

We had such an amazing time in Bar. Even though the season hadn’t quite started yet it was a really relaxing time, the weather was warm and there were some beautiful coasts to see. The Forest restaurant is a particular highlight for a pizza or a seafood risotto. We had a lovely time and didn’t find the beaches too busy. We also highly recommend the scenic train from Bar to Podgorica.

This cathedral is so beautiful and impressive especially the interior and the painting on the roof and walls. It is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world . It doesn’t matter if you are religious or not , you must see this place when you are in Bar, Montenegro. When we were there , there was a mass so we saw people solemnly attending the mass. Remember: Be respectful especially that this is a cathedral where people practice their religion.
