Botswana travel guide and discussion

Gaborone is the capital and largest city of Botswana, located in the southeastern part of the country near the South African border. It became the capital when Botswana gained independence in 1966 and has since grown into the country’s political, economic, and commercial center. The city is known for its clean streets, peaceful atmosphere, and modern infrastructure. Visitors can enjoy attractions such as the Three Dikgosi Monument, the National Museum and Art Gallery, the Gaborone Game Reserve, and the lively Main Mall, which offers shopping, local crafts, and restaurants. Gaborone is also an excellent starting point for exploring Botswana’s famous wildlife, including the Okavango Delta and the Kalahari Desert. The city combines modern urban life with Botswana’s rich culture, making it a welcoming destination for business travelers and tourists alike.

#kindnessontheroad The Okavango Delta is best explored via mokoro—a traditional dugout canoe poled by a local guide. On a sunrise excursion near Chief’s Island, our poler, Kabelo, was navigating through a narrow channel choked with papyrus reeds. Suddenly, the water ahead began to churn violently. A pod of hippos was submerged just beneath the surface, blocking our path. Hippos are notoriously territorial and responsible for more tourist deaths in Africa than any other large animal. My heart started racing. Instead of retreating or making loud noises, Kabelo remained eerily calm. He silently shifted his pole to the side of the mokoro and began to gently push us backward, inch by inch, using the reeds for leverage to avoid splashing. He whispered that hippos have poor eyesight but excellent hearing and vibration sensitivity. Any splash could be interpreted as a challenge. Once we were a safe distance away, he guided us through a hidden, narrower channel that bypassed the pod entirely. He later explained that this was an "elephant path"—a submerged route created by elephants crossing the delta. He had memorized these routes over years of poling. His expertise turned a potential disaster into a safe, intimate wildlife encounter. If you take a mokoro trip, trust your poler implicitly and follow their silence cues. Never attempt to pole yourself unless you are a trained professional. What’s the closest wildlife encounter you’ve had that left your heart pounding?

The Zambezi River is a total showstopper—yep, the fourth-longest river on the entire African continent and the longest that flows into the Indian Ocean. Stretching a wild 2,574 kilometers, this river is the ultimate wanderer, flowing through six iconic countries: Zambia, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. It kicks off in northwestern Zambia and winds its way east, spilling out dramatically into the Indian Ocean in Mozambique. Talk about a journey! 🛶 For centuries, the Zambezi has been the lifeline for everyone living along its lush banks. Early communities relied on it for fishing (fresh catch dinner—sooo good!), farming, and trading with neighbors up and down the river. It’s always been a social connector, mixing cultures and building empires throughout southern Africa. Flashback to 1855: Scottish explorer David Livingstone (the OG adventurer) rocked up and was absolutely blown away by Victoria Falls—a mind-blowing waterfall the locals called “Mosi-oa-Tunya,” aka “The Smoke That Thunders.” Trust, the vibes are unreal—rainbows, mist, and heart-thumping views! 🌈🌊 Victoria Falls is right on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and you don’t wanna skip it. During the colonial era, the Zambezi became a key route for explorers, traders, and, later, all kinds of big development. Fast forward to the 20th century, and you’ve got the Kariba Dam (on the Zambia-Zimbabwe border) and Cahora Bassa Dam (in Mozambique) switched on and generating power for millions. These megaprojects were game-changers, lighting up cities and boosting economies—but they’ve also shaken up the river’s natural vibe. Today, the Zambezi River is pure magic and 100% bucket list material. It’s a powerhouse for agriculture, fishing, tourism (think river safaris and white-water rafting!), and wildlife—hello, hippos and crocodiles! The river’s stunning views and epic experiences keep travelers coming back for more. Don’t miss: · Victoria Falls (Border of Zambia & Zimbabwe at Mosi-oa-Tunya Road, Livingstone, Zambia / Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Open daily 6:00 AM–6:00 PM. Book tours on trip.com for best deals!) · Kariba Dam (Kariba, Zimbabwe / Siavonga, Zambia) · Cahora Bassa Dam (Songo, Mozambique) Bottom line: the Zambezi is more than just a river—it’s the absolute heartbeat of southern Africa, bursting with wild beauty, rich history, and unforgettable adventures. Start planning your Zambezi trip and get ready to be amazed! 🚤🌅 #travel2026 #naturalwonders #thingstodo #myitinerary

🇧🇼 BOTSWANA If you want to see Africa in its most pristine condition, Botswana is a country worth considering. 🐘🌿 💧 A major highlight is the Okavango Delta, a vast wetland in the middle of the Kalahari Desert, nourished by rivers during the dry season, creating a world of small islands, canals, and grasslands. 🛶 A unique way to explore is by Mokoro, a traditional canoe propelled by pole along the waterways, perfect for quiet nature viewing and getting closer to the ecosystem. 🦁 If you're a safari enthusiast, Chobe National Park is not to be missed, especially the Chobe River area, famous for its large herds of elephants. During the dry season, many animals come to the riverbanks to find water. This makes it an excellent time to see wildlife (Botswana Tourism). 🌿 Another reason why Botswana is special is that the Okavango Delta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's most important inland wetlands. It's home to elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, rhinos, hippos, and numerous birds (UNESCO World Heritage Centre). ✨ Botswana may not be a country for big cities or shopping, but if you want a serious safari experience, vast natural landscapes, and a more peaceful Africa, this is one country you should definitely add to your list. 🇧🇼 #Botswana #AfricaTravel #AfricaTrip #TravelReview

Why Lesotho, and why NOW? Lesotho just became Africa’s most underrated mountain kingdom — and the world is finally starting to notice. In 2025, this tiny landlocked nation welcomed over 1.2 million international visitors — a figure that rivals far larger African destinations. Tourism revenue climbed 12% year-on-year, and the Kingdom is investing in new infrastructure, eco-lodges, and adventure tourism. But here’s what the algorithm won’t tell you: most visitors treat Lesotho as a day trip from South Africa, see the Sani Pass, and leave. They miss the dinosaur footprints, the ski slopes of Africa, and the M15 papa where Lesotho actually breathes. This guide is built for the traveler who wants real value. Save it. You’ll use it. 🚐 TRANSPORT: The M10 Taxi That Beats Every 4WD The mistake starts at Maseru Bridge. Taxis quote M200–300 to the city center. The shared taxi — Lesotho’s white minivans — costs M8–15 for most urban routes. They run on fixed routes, leave when full, and connect every corner of Maseru. Pay the conductor in cash. Exact change helps. The 4WD rule. To reach Sani Pass, Katse Dam, or the Maloti Mountains, you need a 4WD and a local driver. Sani Pass is one of the most dramatic mountain roads in Africa — a series of hairpin bends climbing to 2,874 meters. A day trip from Underberg or Maseru costs M1,500–2,500 ($80–135) per vehicle, split between passengers. Book through a licensed operator. The pony trek truth. Lesotho’s Basotho ponies are legendary — sure-footed, sturdy, and the traditional way to travel the mountains. A 2-hour pony trek from Malealea Lodge costs M300–500 ($16–27). A full-day trek runs M600–900. This isn’t a tourist gimmick. It’s how Basotho have moved through these mountains for centuries. 🍲 FOOD: The M15 Papa That Feeds a Family Lesotho food is not fancy. It’s papa — a thick maize porridge, the backbone of every meal. It’s moroho — wild spinach cooked with onions and tomatoes. And it’s nama — grilled or stewed beef, mutton, or chicken, often served with ting (fermented sorghum porridge) for breakfast. The local eatery rule. A plate of papa with moroho and nama at a local eatery costs M30–60 ($1.60–3.25). A papa with chicken runs M50–80. At a tourist lodge, the same meal costs M150–250. Look for the spot with locals in work clothes. That’s the one. Must-try, ranked: · Papa — the everyday staple. M15–30 from any street vendor. · Moroho — wild spinach with onions. The everyday side. · Nama — grilled or stewed meat. The Sunday ritual. · Ting — fermented sorghum porridge. The breakfast of champions. · Likahare — traditional Basotho beer. M10–20 from a local shebeen. The beer rule. Maluti is Lesotho’s national lager — crisp, cold, and everywhere. At a local bar, a bottle costs M15–25 ($0.80–1.35). At a lodge, expect M35–50. Drink it cold, like the locals do. 🗺️ HIDDEN LESOTHO: 3 Places Tourists Miss 1. Subeng Dinosaur Footprints (Leribe District) — A hidden paleontological site near the town of Subeng, where dinosaur footprints dating back 200 million years are preserved in sandstone. The tracks — belonging to theropods, ornithopods, and sauropods — are clearly visible and completely unprotected. No entrance fee. No tour buses. Just you and the Jurassic period. 2. Katse Dam (Thaba-Tseka District) — One of Africa’s largest dams, rising 185 meters above the Malibamat’so River. The dam is the centrepiece of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project — one of the most ambitious engineering feats on the continent. You can tour the underground tunnels, walk across the dam wall, and take a boat trip on the reservoir. Almost no foreign tourists make it here. That’s exactly why you should. 3. Thaba Bosiu (Maseru District) — The historic mountain fortress where King Moshoeshoe I founded the Basotho nation in the 19th century. It’s a UNESCO candidate and the spiritual heart of Lesotho. Hike to the summit for panoramic views of the surrounding plains. Entry is M50 ($2.70). No crowds. No queues. Honorable mention: Maletsunyane Falls — one of Africa’s highest single-drop waterfalls at 192 meters, near the town of Semonkong. You can abseil down it — the world’s highest commercial abseil at 204 meters — for M1,200–1,800 ($65–95). No crowds. No queues. 💰 BUDGET REALITY CHECK Lesotho is one of Africa’s best-value destinations — if you eat at local eateries and take taxis. It uses the loti (LSL), roughly M18.50 to 1 US dollar. South African rand is also accepted. · Budget traveler: M400–600 ($22–32) per day — guesthouses, local eateries, shared taxis. · Mid-range traveler: M1,000–1,800 ($54–97) per day — lodges, restaurant meals, occasional 4WD hire. · Papa with moroho and nama: M30–60. · Maluti beer (local bar): M15–25. · Shared taxi (city): M8–15. · Pony trek (2 hours): M300–500. · Sani Pass day trip: M1,500–2,500 per vehicle. · Abseil Maletsunyane Falls: M1,200–1,800. · Guesthouse (private room): M300–600 per night. Realistic daily budget: M400–1,800 depending on your style. Budget travelers can stay under M600 with guesthouses, local eateries, and shared taxis. Mid-range travelers spend around M1,500 with lodges and occasional 4WD hire. 🙏 ETIQUETTE: 5 Unspoken Rules That Matter Lesotho runs on warmth, respect, and a deep sense of community. These aren’t tourist rules — they’re how the country works. 1. Greet everyone before anything else. Say “Dumela” (hello) when you enter a shop, restaurant, or home. Take time for greetings. Rushing past them is considered rude. A handshake is standard for first meetings. Between friends, a kiss on both cheeks is common. 2. Use your right hand for eating, giving, and receiving. The left hand is considered unclean. When eating from a communal plate of papa, take from the section directly in front of you. 3. Dress modestly. Lesotho is a conservative Christian country. Cover your shoulders and knees, especially in rural areas and at religious sites. The Basotho blanket — a traditional woollen blanket worn over the shoulders — is not just clothing. It’s a symbol of national identity. If you buy one, wear it with respect. 4. Don’t photograph people without asking — especially in rural areas. A polite “May I take your photo?” goes a long way. If someone says no, respect it. Don’t offer money — it creates a transactional relationship that undermines genuine connection. 5. Tipping is appreciated, not mandatory. In restaurants, 5–10% is standard for good service if not already included. For hotel porters, M10–20 per bag. For tour guides and drivers, M100–200 per person per day is appropriate. 💾 SAVE THIS POST IF: · You’re planning Lesotho in 2026 — it’s Africa’s most underrated mountain kingdom, with 1.2 million visitors. · You want to eat papa for M15 and abseil Maletsunyane Falls before the crowds find it. · You believe the best travel intel comes from real experience, not recycled top-10 lists. Why Botswana, and why NOW? Botswana just posted its strongest tourism performance on record. The country welcomed a record 1.8 million visitors in 2025 — and the Botswana Tourism Organisation is targeting at least 10% growth in 2026, with plans to double arrivals within five years. Over 1.18 million international tourists arrived in 2026 alone, driving a 33% surge in motorhome safari trips across southern Africa. But here’s what the algorithm won’t tell you: most visitors fly into Maun or Kasane, do a quick safari in Chobe or the Delta, and leave. They miss the salt-pan islands, the rock art galleries, and the P10 magwinya where Botswana actually breathes. This guide is built for the traveler who wants real value. Save it. You’ll use it. 🚐 TRANSPORT: The Combi That Beats Every Private Transfer The mistake starts at Maun or Kasane airports. Private transfers quote P300–600 to town. The combi — Botswana’s shared minibus taxis — swarm the ranks in Gaborone and Francistown, cost a fraction of a private cab, and leave when full. In Gaborone, you can grab a cashless tap card at major bus stops to pay without fumbling for exact change. The intercity bus rule. For long distances, shared minibuses and buses connect major towns. They don’t run to a timetable — they leave when full. Show up early in the morning. Cash only. The 4WD truth. Botswana’s greatest places — Tsodilo Hills, Kubu Island, the Central Kalahari — are reachable only by 4x4 or helicopter. A 4WD rental with camping gear is expensive, but for groups of two or more, splitting the cost unlocks the country. For solo travelers, guided mobile safaris are the move. 🍲 FOOD: The P10 Magwinya That Beats Every Restaurant Botswanan food is not fancy. It’s magwinya — deep-fried dough balls, also called vetkoek or “fat cakes,” sold from street stalls for pocket change. It’s seswaa — shredded, slow-cooked beef, the national dish. And it’s bogobe — sorghum porridge, the everyday staple. The street stall rule. A magwinya costs P2–5 from any street vendor. A portion of seswaa with bogobe at a local eatery runs P30–50. A full plate with morogo (wild spinach) and dikgobe (beans) costs P40–70. Look for the stall with the longest line of locals. That’s the one. Must-try, ranked: · Magwinya (Vetkoek) — deep-fried dough. P2–5 from any street stall. · Seswaa — shredded beef, slow-cooked for hours. The national dish. P30–50. · Bogobe — sorghum porridge. The everyday staple. · Morogo — wild spinach, cooked with onions. The ultimate side. · Dikgobe — beans and maize, slow-simmered. The comfort food. The tea rule. Botswanan tea is served strong, milky, and sweet. At a local café or when visiting a home, always accept a cup. Refusing outright is considered rude. 🗺️ HIDDEN BOTSWANA: 3 Places Tourists Miss 1. Nxai Pan National Park — For travellers seeking tranquillity, abundant wildlife sightings and an authentic experience away from crowded tourist hotspots, Nxai Pan National Park stands out as an iconic destination worth exploring. Situated along the Nata-Maun road in northern Botswana, the park features vast open landscapes of fossilised salt pans, grassy plains and acacia woodlands. The area is renowned for its striking scenery, highlighted by the famous Baines Baobabs — seven large baobabs estimated to be around 1,000 years old and reaching up to 20 metres in height, named after explorer and artist Thomas Baines, who painted them in 1862. Despite its beauty, Nxai Pan remains one of Botswana’s lesser-visited parks, making it a true hidden gem for travellers seeking off-the-beaten-track experiences. The park receives an average of over 20,000 visitors annually — significantly fewer than Moremi Game Reserve. 2. Tsodilo Hills — A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, Tsodilo Hills consists of rock paintings, shelters, and small caves and is of great religious and spiritual significance to the local San People of the Kalahari. Located in northwestern Botswana, it contains over 4,500 rock paintings in an area of just 10 square kilometres — one of the highest concentrations of rock art in the world. Almost no foreign tourists make it here. That’s exactly why you should. 3. Mashatu Game Reserve — For a less crowded safari destination than the famous Chobe National Park or the Okavango Delta, Mashatu Game Reserve is perfect. Mashatu covers 40% of the Northern Tuli Game Reserve and shares unfenced borders with both the Zimbabwean and South African national parks. Known as the “land of giants,” it is home to the world’s largest flying bird (the kori bustard), largest mammal (elephant), largest flightless bird (ostrich), largest antelope (eland), and the tallest living animal in the world, the giraffe. Honorable mention: Kubu Island — a dry granite island rising from the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, crowned with scraggly baobab trees and surrounded by an ancient sea of white salt. It’s a national monument and a sacred site for the Khoe people. Stay at the community-run camp and watch the sunset turn the salt pans pink. 💰 BUDGET REALITY CHECK Botswana is not cheap by African standards — but it’s manageable if you eat at street stalls and take combis. · Budget traveler: $32 (P421) per person per day — hostels, street food, shared minibuses · Mid-range traveler: $74 (P970) per day — private rooms, restaurant meals, occasional taxis · Magwinya: P2–5 · Seswaa with bogobe: P30–50 · Combi ride (city): a few pulas · National park entry: approximately P120–P150 per person per day (fees unchanged as of 2026 pending review) · 4x4 rental: expensive, but splits between passengers · Hostel dorm: $10–20 per night · Guesthouse (private room): $25–50 per night Realistic daily budget: 40 with hostels, street food, and combis. Mid-range travelers spend around 150–300+ per day depending on the camp and inclusions. 🙏 ETIQUETTE: 5 Unspoken Rules That Matter Botswana runs on warmth, formality, and the weight of botho — the national philosophy of humanity and respect. These aren’t tourist rules — they’re how the country works. 1. Greet everyone before anything else. It is proper to greet everyone you encounter before anything else. Ask how they are. Take time for greetings. Rushing past them is considered rude. The handshake is standard — and in some areas, a three-part handshake (shake, grip thumbs, shake again) is used. 2. Show respect to elders. When greeting an elder, you may grasp your right wrist with your left hand before shaking theirs — a sign of deep respect. Stand when an elder enters the room. Serve elders first at meals. 3. Don’t shout or talk loudly. Botswana is a polite, reserved culture. Loud speech or outbursts of temper are frowned upon. Speak softly. Be calm. 4. Dress modestly. Botswana leans conservative in attire. Cover shoulders and knees, especially in rural areas and at religious sites. 5. Tipping is appreciated, not mandatory. In restaurants, 10% is standard for good service if not already included. For safari guides, US20–40 per guest per day for a private guide. Botswana leans conservative in attire. Cover shoulders and knees, especially in rural areas and at religious sites. 5. Don't discuss sexuality or religion casually. These are taboo topics in Botswana. Avoid them unless your host brings them up. 💾 SAVE THIS POST IF: · You're planning Botswana in 2026 — it's breaking tourism records and targeting 10% growth. · You want to see Tsodilo Hills and Kubu Island before the crowds find them. · You believe the best travel intel comes from real experience, not recycled top-10 lists. Why Zambia, and why NOW? Zambia just crossed two million international tourist arrivals in 2026 — and is on track to hit its 2.5 million target by year-end, with tourism revenue projected to surpass US$1 billion for the first time. The country recorded 2.3 million arrivals in 2025, and the momentum is real. Zambia was named Africa’s Best Safari Destination at the 2026 World Travel Awards, and new infrastructure — from the Kazungula Bridge to improved road access — is finally making the country’s wildest corners reachable. But here’s what the algorithm won’t tell you: most visitors fly into Livingstone, see Victoria Falls, and leave. They miss the walking safaris, the bat migrations, and the forgotten national parks where Zambia actually breathes. This guide is built for the traveler who wants real value. Save it. You’ll use it. 🚌 TRANSPORT: The K1 Ride That Beats Every Taxi The mistake starts at Lusaka’s Kenneth Kaunda Airport. Taxis quote K150–250 to the city center. The local minibus — Zambia’s shared taxi system — costs a fraction of that, and fares were reduced nationwide in July 2026 following a fuel price cut. Local routes in Lusaka dropped by K1.00, while peri-urban routes between Lusaka and surrounding towns fell by K3.00. A trip from Chawama to the city centre now costs around K12. The intercity bus rule. Zambia’s long-distance buses are cheap and reliable. Lusaka to Livingstone (for Victoria Falls) takes 6–7 hours and costs K150–250 depending on the operator. Lusaka to South Luangwa (for the best walking safaris in Africa) runs 8–10 hours for K200–300. Book a day ahead in high season. The Mazhandu Family Bus and Juldan Motors are the most reliable operators. The one thing to know: Zambia is big. Distances on the map are deceptive. A domestic flight from Lusaka to Mfuwe (South Luangwa) or Livingstone often costs less than a 10-hour bus — book Proflight Zambia early for fares under $150. 🍲 FOOD: The K30 Nshima That Beats Every Restaurant Zambian food is not fancy. It’s nshima — thick white maize porridge that anchors every meal, eaten with your right hand and dipped into relishes (stews of vegetables, beans, or meat). It’s ifisashi — greens cooked with ground peanuts until rich and savory. And it’s chikanda — a tangy, dense cake made from orchid tubers, known as “African polony.” The local eatery rule. A filling plate of nshima with chicken or vegetables at a local eatery costs K50–100 (5). A local meal in Lusaka averages K50–K100. Look for the spot with the longest line of locals in work clothes. That’s the one. Must-try, ranked: · Nshima with relish — the national staple. K50–100. · Ifisashi — greens in peanut sauce. The everyday side. · Chikanda — orchid tuber cake. The acquired taste worth acquiring. K10–20. · Kapenta — dried sardines from Lake Tanganyika. Fried with onions and tomatoes. · Inswa — flying termites, fried until crispy. The seasonal delicacy. The tea rule. Zambian tea is served strong, milky, and sweet. At a local café or when visiting a home, always accept a cup. Refusing outright is considered rude. 🗺️ HIDDEN ZAMBIA: 3 Places Tourists Miss 1. North Luangwa National Park — One of Zambia’s remotest and underexplored parks, accessible only by walking safari. Just two camps operate here, making it the quietest park in Zambia. The Amatololo Loop community-run campsites offer a genuine wilderness experience. No crowds. No vehicles. Just you, a guide, and the wild. 2. West Lunga National Park — Hidden away in northwestern Zambia, West Lunga is one of Africa’s least-visited protected areas and one of the country’s last true wilderness frontiers. For those willing to venture off the beaten path, the reward is an authentic African wilderness experience that few places on the continent can still offer. 3. Kasanka National Park (Bat Migration) — Every year around November, Kasanka hosts the world’s largest mammal migration — over 10 million fruit bats descending on a small patch of forest. It’s one of the most spectacular wildlife events on earth, and almost no foreign tourists know it exists. 💰 BUDGET REALITY CHECK Zambia is not cheap by African standards — but it’s more affordable than you think if you eat at local eateries and take minibuses. · Backpacker: **13/night), local meals ($2.50–5), minibus transport. · Mid-range traveler: $80–120 per day — private rooms, restaurant meals, occasional taxis. · Luxury safari: $400–800+ per day — bush camps, guided game drives, all-inclusive. · Hostel dorm: $13 per night. · Local meal: K50–100 ($2.50–5). · Coffee: K40–60 ($2–3). · Taxi (short distance): K50–150 ($2.50–7). · Victoria Falls entry (international): $50 (single-entry visa is now $50 as of January 2026). Realistic daily budget: 40 with hostels, local eateries, and minibuses. Mid-range travelers spend around $100 with private rooms and occasional restaurant meals. 🙏 ETIQUETTE: 5 Unspoken Rules That Matter Zambia runs on warmth, courtesy, and the ritual of sharing food. These aren’t tourist rules — they’re how the country works. 1. Greet everyone before anything else. Zambians are unhurried and courteous. If you need assistance or are asking for directions, greet the person first — ask how they are doing. Politeness and genuine interest will get you far. 2. The mealtime rule. In many Zambian cultures, an unannounced visitor at mealtime is expected to share the food with the hosts. It is considered inappropriate for the host to have to invite the guest to partake — and discourteous for the visitor not to join. 3. Eat with your right hand. When eating nshima, use your right hand to scoop and dip. The left hand is considered unclean. Wash your hands before and after meals — your host will offer water and a bowl. 4. Don’t maintain constant eye contact. In Zambia, it is not polite to hold eye contact with someone, especially someone older or of higher status. Looking away is a sign of respect, not dishonesty. 5. Tipping is appreciated, not mandatory. In restaurants, 5–10% is customary if a service charge is not included. For safari guides and trackers, tip 5–10 per day, deposited in the communal tip box. US dollars are the accepted tipping currency in safari camps. 💾 SAVE THIS POST IF: · You’re planning Zambia in 2026 — it’s breaking tourism records and winning international awards. · You want to see North Luangwa and Kasanka before the crowds find them. · You believe the best travel intel comes from real experience, not recycled top-10 lists. Why Zimbabwe, and why NOW? Zimbabwe is quietly becoming one of Africa’s most compelling destinations. In the first quarter of 2026, international arrivals rose 11% to 384,561, while tourism receipts climbed 14% to US67.8 million. By mid-year, receipts had reached US$537 million, with domestic tourism trips surging 27% to 6.4 million. The country was named a Forbes top travel destination and won Destination of the Year for Natural Wonders at ITB Berlin 2026. But here’s what the algorithm won’t tell you: most visitors fly into Victoria Falls, see the waterfall, and leave. They miss the ancient stone cities, the balancing rock forests, and the sand beaches where Zimbabwe actually breathes. This guide is built for the traveler who wants real value. Save it. You’ll use it. 🚌 TRANSPORT: The US$0.50 Ride That Beats Every Taxi The mistake starts at Harare or Bulawayo airports. Taxis quote US0.50 per trip, compared to US$1 or more on private omnibuses. They run on fixed routes across major cities. Pay the conductor in cash. US dollars are accepted everywhere. The intercity bus rule. Zimbabwe’s long-distance buses are cheap and reliable. Harare to Victoria Falls costs US30–35. Book through Busbud or at the terminal. Overnight buses save a night’s accommodation. The one thing to know: Domestic flights with Fastjet or Air Zimbabwe cost US$80–150 one-way, but if you book three months in advance, you can secure the lower end of that range. For solo travelers on that a budget, the bus anchors is the move. For groups, flying saves a full day. 🍲 FOOD: The US$3 Sadza That Beats Every Restaurant Zimbabwean food is not fancy. It’s sadza — thick white maize porridge every meal, eaten with your right hand and dipped into relish (stewed vegetables, beans, or meat). It’s nyama — grilled or stewed beef, goat, or chicken. And it’s muriwo unedovi — greens cooked in peanut butter, the everyday side dish that makes everything taste like home. The local eatery rule. A filling plate of sadza with vegetables or chicken at a local eatery in Harare’s CBD or Victoria Falls town costs US3. Look for the spot with the longest line of locals in work clothes. That’s the one. Must-try, ranked: · Sadza with nyama — the national staple. US$3–5 at a local eatery. · Muriwo unedovi — greens in peanut butter. The everyday side. · Mopane worms — dried caterpillars, fried with onions and tomatoes. A protein-packed delicacy. Try them once. · Biltong — dried, spiced meat. The ultimate road-trip snack. · Mazoe — the beloved orange squash drink. Every Zimbabwean grew up on it. The tea rule. Zimbabwean tea is served strong, milky, and sweet. At a local café or when visiting a home, always accept a cup. Refusing outright is considered rude. Sit. Talk. Drink it slowly. 🗺️ HIDDEN ZIMBABWE: 3 Places Tourists Miss 1. Ziwa National Monument (Nyanga) — Just 22 km from Nyanga Town, Ziwa is one of Zimbabwe’s most intriguing heritage sites — a 3,333-hectare landscape of ancient stone terraces built centuries ago to conserve soil and water. The maze-like pathways wind through terraces and open clearings, each turn revealing a new vista. It’s a living landscape for walkers and history lovers, and almost no foreign tourists make it here. 2. Matobo National Park (Bulawayo) — A UNESCO World Heritage Site 35 km south of Bulawayo, where granite kopjes balance impossibly on 2-cm contact points and San rock paintings cover cave walls. Take a minibus from Bulawayo (US15 entry plus US25 per chalet. Go in January or February when the moss on the granite is thick and dripping — not July, when it’s just rock. 3. Binga Sand Beach (Lake Kariba) — A hidden sand beach on the shores of Lake Kariba in Matabeleland North that received just 2,000 visitors in 2025 — up from 1,000 the year before. Tourists praise its tranquil setting, scenic lake views, and welcoming locals. River cruises and cultural experiences are on offer. Access is improving with upgrades to the Binga aerodrome and the Karoi-Binga road. Go before the crowds find it. 💰 BUDGET REALITY CHECK Zimbabwe is not cheap by African standards — but it’s more affordable than you think if you eat at local eateries and take Zupco buses. · Backpacker: US$50–80 per day for food and tips if accommodation is pre-paid. · Mid-range traveler: US$100–150 per day — private rooms, restaurant meals, occasional tours. · Local eatery meal: US$3–5. · Zupco bus ride: US$0.50. · Intercity bus (Harare–Vic Falls): US$20–40. · Victoria Falls entry (international): US50). · Matobo entry + rhino guide: US10. · Budget camping safari: US$100–180 per night including meals, tent, and game drives. · Hostel dorm: US$10–20 per night. Realistic daily budget: US80 with local eateries, Zupco buses, and camping. Mid-range travelers spend around US$120–150 with private lodges and occasional tours. 🙏 ETIQUETTE: 5 Unspoken Rules That Matter Zimbabwe runs on warmth, respect, and the ritual of sharing food. These aren’t tourist rules — they’re how the country works. 1. The tirikudya rule. In Shona culture, whenever someone is eating, the polite statement is “Tirikudya” (we are eating) — an invitation to join. If you refuse, it can appear disrespectful unless you politely say you’re full. Otherwise, take a few morsels or tuck into the shared dish. 2. Eat with your right hand. When eating sadza, use your right hand to scoop and dip. The left hand is considered unclean. Wash your hands before and after meals — your host will offer water and a bowl. 3. Bring a small gift when visiting a home. A bottle of wine, flowers, or something from your home country is appropriate. Don’t arrive empty-handed. 4. Greet everyone before anything else. A handshake is standard. Take time for greetings. Rushing past them to get to business is considered rude. 5. Respect the elders. Greet the eldest person in the room first. Stand when an elder enters. Serve elders before yourself at meals. 💾 SAVE THIS POST IF: · You’re planning Zimbabwe in 2026 — it’s breaking tourism records and winning international awards. · You want to see Ziwa and Binga before the crowds find them. · You believe the best travel intel comes from real experience, not recycled top-10 lists. We spent a wonderful week at this hotel, relaxing after a safari in Botswana. We appreciated the friendly and attentive service. I'm sharing how I managed to visit three African countries in three days and how much it cost. Here's my itinerary and tips for a solo trip! Where I stayed, where I arrived, and what I saw. Itinerary: Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 Zambia 🇿🇲 Botswana 🇧🇼 A perfect option for solo travelers! Where the journey begins✈️ I flew to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, to see my dream and a natural wonder of the world—Victoria Falls. I flew there from Cape Town with a short layover in Johannesburg. There are direct flights, but they're more expensive 🤑 Hotel 🏨 I stayed at the N1 Hotel & Campsite Victoria Falls. It's located close to the falls and the border with Zambia. It's an easy walk to the falls. Standard rooms and bungalows are available. Victoria Falls has many prestigious and expensive lodges with animals and gardens. Everything here is very simple, yet very cozy. Excellent value for money. Victoria Falls 💦 First, I went to Victoria Falls. It's located on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, and you can cross the border into each country by foot across a bridge. Russian citizens need a KAZA Visa to visit Zambia and Zimbabwe. It costs $50 and is issued at the airport at the border. You don't need to fill out anything in advance. Be sure to check the immigration requirements for your country to avoid any unpleasant situations! They may differ for each country! Be careful with this point. I booked a guided tour of the falls because I wanted to learn more about the history of both countries and how the falls were formed. The entrance ticket is valid only once, so if you want to return the next day, you'll have to pay for another ticket. 🎟️ Zambezi River Cruise 🚢 In the evening, I took a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River, where I spotted crocodiles, hippos, and rare birds. A small dinner and drinks were included in the cruise price. Botswana Safari, Day 2 🐘 The next day, I went on a Botswana safari to Chobe National Park. The border is about 70 km from Victoria Falls. A day trip there is ideal. An amazing fact: this country is home to the world's largest elephant population—over 135,000. Did you know? In one day, I went on two safaris: a land safari and a river safari, and I encountered a huge number of animals: giraffes, antelope, buffalo, a family of wild boars, and lionesses dining on a dead elephant. BOMA Dinner🔥🪘 That same evening, I went to the African BOMA dinner. But I wasn't impressed at all. It's a buffet dinner, with few African dishes, and no one will tell you about them. But I did enjoy the drum show and dancing! 💃🏼 Angel's Pool 🫣 On the final day, I was choosing between a helicopter ride and another crazy activity. I'd already flown in Cape Town, and I wanted something special. I went to the Zambian side to swim in Angel's Pool at the very edge of Victoria Falls. A unique experience and a true natural attraction. It was scary, but I don't regret it at all. It's similar to the famous Devil's Pool and is located a couple hundred meters away. The heights change depending on the season and the water level at the falls. 💸Zimbabwe currently doesn't have its own currency, and prices here are in dollars. The place (Victoria Falls) is aimed at very wealthy tourists. And the prices here are quite high, it must be said. The average price for breakfast is $10, dinner is $20 and up, and a taxi from the airport is at least $15 (if you bargain). However, the distances there are very short. How much did I spend in three days? 💵💸🤑 · Flight from South Africa to Zimbabwe — 28,000 ₽ · 4 nights at the Victoria Falls Hotel — 27,000 ₽ · Airport visa, border fees, and national park entrance fees — ~10,000 ₽ Guided tour — 7,500 ₽ (but as a blogger, it was free for me) · Zambezi River cruise 5,500 ₽ · Angel's pool — 15,500 ₽ (includes transfer, park entrance, and activities) · African Boma dinner — 5,000 ₽ · Botswana safari — 13,000 ₽ · Other expenses for souvenirs, taxis, and food — 13,000 ₽ 💸 TOTAL ~ 120,000 ₽, or just under $1,500. Do you think that's a lot or a little? #victoriafalls #zambia #botswana #africa #safari

This itinerary is specially designed for those who want an in-depth experience of the Okavango, and it is also perfect for travelers seeking a quiet, off-the-beaten-path vacation destination 🇧🇼 Instead of spending time frequently changing hotels or rushing between attractions, we have dedicated 6 nights to &Beyond luxury eco-camps. You will venture deep into different areas of the wetlands, exploring this African oasis by water, land, and air 👇 Why is a guided tour recommended for the Okavango instead of independent travel❓ Camps in the heart of the Okavango Delta are scattered and span a vast area, with many locations accessible only by light aircraft. Safaris also involve various modes of transport, including off-road vehicles, boats, and walking. ❌ Independent travel requires you to handle camp connections, activity bookings, and local drivers/guides yourself, which can easily fragment your experience due to logistics and communication challenges. ⭕️ A guided tour connects all these complex links, leaving your time for a true safari experience and pure vacation enjoyment. No alternatives, 6 nights of consecutive stays at &Beyond 👇 Many Botswana products on the market treat luxury camps as a "one or two-night experience," but we have arranged 6 consecutive nights at top-tier luxury camps. And it's not just staying at the same camp repeatedly❗️ It's about venturing deep into different ecological zones of the Okavango. Xugana Island Lodge: Located in the heart of the Okavango's permanent waters, this island camp is surrounded by waterways, allowing for canoe exploration of the wetlands regardless of the season. Staying here is an immersive experience in the water world itself. Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp: Situated within a 25,000-hectare private concession adjacent to the Moremi Game Reserve, this camp features only 9 luxury tents, offering extreme privacy. You can experience off-road game drives, walking safaris, night safaris, and water-based safaris. Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge: A luxury camp in the forest with architecture inspired by the pangolin. It features private pools, fireplaces, and stargazing spaces, while offering safari experiences that delve deep into the surrounding wildlife habitats. 🚁 What you are paying for is not just the hotel, but a complete water, land, and air safari. ✅ Fly over the Okavango in a light aircraft to see the life-giving textures of intertwined waterways and islands from above. ✅ Venture deep into the reserve by off-road vehicle to search for elephant herds, lion prides, leopards, and other wilderness residents. ✅ Travel through papyrus and water lily-filled waterways by canoe and speedboat. ✅ Explore an ecosystem invisible during the day with night safaris and walking tours. 🌟 Connecting Chobe National Park and Victoria Falls, you will stay directly in the core area of Chobe National Park, allowing you to make full use of golden hours like dawn and dusk for game viewing. 📅 Feb 28 – Mar 10, 2027 (11 days, 10 nights) 💰 Price includes: Five-star hotels, luxury tented camps + professional local seven-seater safari vehicles, camp light aircraft + excellent Chinese-speaking escort, experienced local drivers/guides + visa fees + daily meals, transportation, attraction and activity tickets + outbound travel accident insurance

#sunsetplaces Baines’ Baobabs are seven trees Thomas Baines painted in 1862, still there, on a low rise above Nxai Pan’s salt crust. I drove in from Maun (136 km, fuel up fully—no fuel inside, BWP 190/person 2026 fee + BWP 75/car, pay at the South Gate with card or pula cash, keep the receipt for the campsite). High-clearance 4×4 non-negotiable; the sand from the Maun–Nata road ate a sedan I passed stranded at 14:00. I reached the baobabs at 16:20, parked at the unfenced site (three basic campsites, no water, no toilet—pack out everything), and walked the 200 m to the rise. The pan horizon is 20 km of nothing; the sun doesn’t set behind a dune, it sets behind the earth’s curve. 16:50–17:40 is the window: baobab bark goes from grey to oxblood, the salt crust reflects pink, a herd of zebra crossed once and froze in silhouette. Mistake: a group arrived at 17:50 with a rooftop tent setup—too late for the bark glow, and they spooked a black-backed jackal. Another: drones—banned in Botswana national parks without special permit, ranger at South Gate will flag it. Carry 5 L water/person/day, the standpipe at South Camp is mineralised and foul. Would you camp unfenced beside the baobabs for the 05:30 camel-thorn glow and the 17:30 dusk double, or day-trip from Maun and sacrifice the blue-hour afterglow?

But what clearly distinguishes Botswana from Namibia is that it's not just the dry landscapes that are the star attraction: "water." 🌿💧 🌊 Okavango Delta One of Botswana's most breathtaking landscapes. The Okavango Delta is a vast wetland area with a network of rivers and streams branching out among small islands. What's particularly special is that the delta's highest water levels occur during Botswana's dry season. This is because some of the water comes from rainfall in the highlands of Angola, gradually flowing down to the Okavango Delta over several months. This transforms the area into a world of abundant water while other regions are drying up. 🐘 Chobe Another area famous for its wildlife, especially elephants. The Chobe River is a vital water source for many wild animals. During the dry season, large numbers of elephants can be seen drinking and foraging along the riverbanks. The view of elephants against a backdrop of rivers and expansive skies is one of Botswana's most iconic images. 🏜️ Makgadikgadi If Okavango is a world of rivers, Makgadikgadi is the complete opposite. This area boasts massive salt flats and breathtakingly open landscapes. During the dry season, the white surface of the salt against the vast sky creates a minimalist and unique landscape. 🌿 What makes Botswana so fascinating is its diverse landscape. In a single country, you can find: 🌊 Wetlands 🐘 Rivers and islands 🌾 Savannah grasslands 🏜️ Salt flats 🦁 Wildlife areas This makes Botswana far from a single image as many might imagine. 🌦️ When is the best time to visit Botswana? The most popular time is the dry season, as rainfall is low and wildlife is closer to water sources. ☀️ May–October This is an ideal time for safaris. Especially during the middle of the year when the weather is relatively dry and water sources become gathering points for animals. 🌊 June–August This is when the Okavango Delta has high water levels and is incredibly beautiful. This is the time when many people want to see the delta transformed into a large wetland area. 🌧️ November–March This is the rainy season. The grasslands turn greener, and in some areas, there's a chance to see newborn animals. However, rain and road conditions may make travel in some areas difficult. ⛈️ December–February There are occasional rains and storms. The skies are stunning, and some parts of the landscape turn green. 📍 It's important to remember that "the rainy season" and "the Okavango Delta flooding" are not the same thing. Botswana's main rainfall occurs in late year to early year. But the large volume of water that floods the Okavango Delta comes from rain in the highlands of Angola and arrives during the dry season. This is one of the natural phenomena that makes Botswana so special. 🇧🇼 To summarize Botswana in simple terms: 🌊 Okavango Delta 🐘 Chobe 🏜️ Makgadikgadi 🦁 Safari 🌿 Wetlands 💧 Rivers 🌾 Savannah and the feeling of "truly vast and natural Africa." If Namibia is the country of deserts and sand dunes, Botswana is the country of rivers, wildlife, and vast, untouched landscapes. 🇧🇼 #Botswana #BotswanaTravel #OkavangoDelta #Chobe #Makgadikgadi #AfricanSafari #Wildlife #AfricaTravel #SouthernAfrica #Safari #TravelAfrica #TravelAbroad

#sunsetplaces Xakanaxa (pronounced ka-ka-nya-ka) is in the Moremi Game Reserve, north Okavango — access via Maun (fly JNB→Maun 1.5h, ~BWP 3,500 card), then a 4×4 transfer to a camp (3-day mobile safari BWP 9,000–14,000 all-in, cash USD accepted at camps). The lagoon is 200m from the Xakanaxa campsite; sunset boat rides optional (BWP 400, cash). I camped 2 nights, walked the lagoon boardwalk at 5:30 p.m. in July (sunset 6:15). The hippo grass (Panicum repens) on the lagoon edge went from green to copper, two hippos surfaced 20m out and blew once, the water mirrored a band of tangerine, and the leadwood trees cut black filigree into the last orange. A BWP 15 gin-and-tonic from the camp cooler. Mistake: doing a vehicle dusk drive only — the lagoon boardwalk is where the reflection lands; the truck misses the water. Another: coming in March — flood not yet peaked, lagoon is a mud pan. Rule: no walking the boardwalk without a guide after 6 (hippo path, they'll charge); Moremi entry BWP 330/day paid at South Gate; no drone (Botswana NP ban, fined). Opinion: Xakanaxa's hippo-grass glow is the only sunset where the animal exhales the composition — the hippo blows, the grass bends, the sky agrees, and the boat is just the chair. Discussion: when a 1,500kg herbivore decides the frame by surfacing once, who is the photographer?

If you are looking for an authentic African safari, where nature remains raw and the atmosphere is uncrowded, Botswana is a truly captivating destination. This country places a high priority on its natural heritage. According to Botswana Tourism, approximately 38% of its land is designated as national parks, reserves, and wildlife management areas. The primary highlights are the Okavango Delta, Chobe, and the Kalahari Desert region (Botswana Tourism). 📍 5 Must-Visit Locations 1. Okavango Delta 🛶🐘 Botswana’s top highlight and one of Africa’s most unique landscapes. The Okavango is an inland delta; its waters do not flow into the sea but spread into the Kalahari, creating a network of channels, lagoons, islands, and seasonal floodplains. UNESCO has listed this area as a World Heritage site since 2014 (UNESCO World Heritage Centre). The most popular activity is riding a Mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe, through the waterways to observe wildlife and birds in a serene, quiet atmosphere. Highlights: 🛶 Mokoro • 🐘 Wildlife • 🦅 Birdwatching • 🌅 Sunset Best for: Those seeking a safari experience that goes beyond just a vehicle drive. 2. Chobe National Park 🐘🌊 If you love elephants, this should be at the top of your list. Chobe National Park covers about 11,700 sq km. The Chobe Riverfront is particularly famous for the massive herds of elephants and buffalo that gather by the river during the dry season. You can explore via both game drives and boat safaris (Botswana Tourism). An evening cruise offers the chance to see elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and water birds from a perspective different from a land-based safari. Highlights: 🐘 Elephants • 🚤 River Safari • 🦛 Hippos • 🌅 Sunset Best for: First-time visitors to Botswana. 3. Moremi Game Reserve 🦁🐆 Located in the central and eastern parts of the Okavango Delta, Moremi is where dry land meets wetlands, resulting in a highly diverse ecosystem. Spanning approximately 3,900 sq km, it features channels, lagoons, grasslands, and forests. It is home to a wide range of herbivores and predators, including lions, leopards, and rhinos that have been reintroduced to the area (Botswana Tourism). Highlights: 🦁 Lions • 🐆 Leopards • 🦏 Rhinos • 🦅 Birds Best for: Wildlife photography enthusiasts and those wanting an intense safari experience. 4. Makgadikgadi Pans 🧂🦓 A completely different side of Botswana compared to the Okavango. Makgadikgadi is a massive salt pan area covering about 12,000 sq km within the Kalahari. During the dry season, you’ll see a vast white expanse that seems to never end. However, when the rains arrive, parts of the area fill with water, attracting herds of zebras, wildebeests, and flamingos (Botswana Tourism). Activities in the area include game drives, quad biking, and watching the sunset over the salt pan (Botswana Tourism). Highlights: 🧂 Salt Pan • 🦓 Zebra Migration • 🦩 Flamingos • 🌌 Stargazing Best for: Landscape lovers and those who enjoy unique, surreal views. 5. Tsodilo Hills 🎨⛰️ To add a cultural and historical dimension to your trip, this is a must-visit. Tsodilo Hills is a significant rock art site. UNESCO states that over 4,500 paintings have been found within an area of just 10 sq km, with evidence of human activity dating back at least 100,000 years (UNESCO World Heritage Centre). You can follow hiking trails to view the rock paintings and learn about the cultures of the local San and Hambukushu communities (Botswana Tourism). Highlights: 🎨 Rock Art • 🥾 Hiking • 🌍 Indigenous Culture Best for: Those who want to explore more than just wildlife. 🐾 Wildlife You Might Encounter 🐘 African Elephant 🦁 Lion 🐆 Leopard 🦏 Rhino 🦒 Giraffe 🦓 Zebra 🐃 Buffalo 🐕 African Wild Dog 🦛 Hippo 🐊 Crocodile Botswana’s ecosystems range from deserts to wetlands, making it ideal for viewing a wide variety of both land animals and birds (Botswana Tourism). ☀️ Best Time to Visit For the best safari and wildlife viewing, April to October is ideal. This is the dry season when animals tend to congregate near rivers and water sources, and the grass is shorter, making them easier to spot (Botswana Tourism). The rainy season, or "Green Season," offers lush landscapes, migratory birds, and is the time when many herbivores give birth, providing a completely different atmosphere from the dry season (Botswana Tourism). 🗺️ Recommended Duration For first-timers, 8–12 days is recommended: Maun ↓ 🛶 Okavango Delta ↓ 🦁 Moremi Game Reserve ↓ 🐘 Chobe National Park / Kasane If you have 12–15 days, you can add Makgadikgadi Pans or Tsodilo Hills. 📌 Tips Before You Go · Maun is the main gateway for the Okavango and Moremi. · Kasane is the ideal base for exploring Chobe. · Many safari camps in the Okavango are accessed via light aircraft. · If using light aircraft, check weight and bag type restrictions before packing. · From May to August, nights and early morning game drives can be very cold; bring warm clothing (Botswana Tourism). · Self-drive safaris in some areas require a 4x4 and off-road driving experience. · Do not drive off-road or conduct night drives in national parks and government reserves unless specifically permitted (Botswana Tourism). ✨ Summary Botswana is perfect for those seeking a tranquil, raw, and intimate connection with nature. 🛶 Okavango Delta — Mokoro excursions in the heart of the wetlands. 🐘 Chobe — Massive elephant herds and river safaris. 🦁 Moremi — Intense wildlife encounters. 🧂 Makgadikgadi — Endless salt pan horizons. 🎨 Tsodilo Hills — Ancient rock art and human history. While Kenya and Tanzania offer the classic savanna imagery, Botswana provides a different vibe—quiet, pristine, and renowned for its exceptional water-based safari experiences. 🇧🇼✨

#easytravelpost Tsodilo Hills (UNESCO, "Louvre of the Desert") is 40 km west of the Gumare–Shakawe road, four quartzite hills holding 4,500+ San rock paintings. The mossy Kalahari sand forest trail is the 3 km loop from the visitor centre to the Female Hill base and along the Rhino Cave seep, where Boscia and Terminalia sericea sand-forest trees shade a Sphagnum-in-the-rock-seep microhabitat after summer rain, with Tortula on the quartzite and Barleria in the leaf litter. I drove Maun → Shakawe (5 hrs tar/gravel), then 40 km deep sand to Tsodilo (high-clearance 4×4, BWP 250 shuttle from Gumare if you skip driving the sand). Paid BWP 50/person site entry + BWP 120 guide for Rhino Trail (mandatory, cash only at the trust office, no card). The moss shows Dec–March only. I went late Feb—day 33°C, seep shade 26°C, moss wet at 7 a.m. Wore trail-runners with gaiters; the sand forest floor is soft red Kalahari sand, the seep line is squelch for 6 weeks. Mistake: I drove the 40 km sand in a rented 2×4 Hilux — buried to the diff at km 28, dug out 90 min with the shovel, missed the 4 p.m. guide cutoff. Hire the Gumare shuttle or take a 4×4. Second mistake: I didn't bring 100 BWP small notes — the trust office needed exact change, the guide expected a 50 BWP tip on top. Third: I photographed the Rhino Cave painting with flash — the guide stopped me: "pigment is 70,000 yrs old, flash kills it". Natural light only. Buy in Shakawe: a 30 BWP seswaa roll at the petrol station, not the 180 BWP lodge plate. Gear: a 200 BWP wide-brim — Tsodilo sun is metal. Local rule: no drone (UNESCO site, trust bans), no touching the rock art (fine + shame), guide mandatory for Rhino/Female/Male Hills, no camping outside the designated site (BWP 50/pp). The moss in the quartzite seep is the only water the San painters had—don't contaminate it. Opinion: Tsodilo gets day-tripped for the paintings; the mossy sand-forest seep is the 40-min half. Should the Trust build a 150 m boardwalk on the Rhino seep and charge a 30 BWP honor box, or keep it boot-sand? I'd boardwalk it. Would you drive 40 km of deep sand for a mossy Kalahari seep under 4,500 paintings?

#easytravelpost Moremi Game Reserve sits on the eastern Okavango Delta fringe, and the mossy mopane forest island isn't the open floodplain everyone photographs—it's the raised Colophospermum mopane island at Dombo Hippo Pool or the Xakanaxa mopane–leadwood transition, where after the Jan–Mar rains Sphagnum briefly appears in the clay pans between mopane roots and Thuidium creeps onto the termite mounds. I drove Maun → South Gate (Maqwee, 3.5 hrs on sand, 4×4 essential, 2×4 will bury you by the second dune), paid BWP 270/adult/day international + BWP 115 vehicle fee (foreign-registered under 3.5 t) as of Apr 2026, cash pula at the gate, card unreliable. Slept at Third Bridge Campsite (booked 6 months ahead, ~BWP 350–500/pp/night depending on operator, cash or prepaid). The mossy bit is not on the game drive loop—you walk it. I took the guided mokoro (dugout) from Xakanaxa to a mopane island edge (BWP 450/half-day, cash, 2 people min), stepped off onto the island at 7 a.m. after a night rain. Day 28°C, island shade 22°C, moss wet till 9 a.m. Wore gumboots—the island edge is clay-and-mopane-leaf soup. Mistake: I entered Moremi in April thinking "end of wet" — the pans were still flooded, the moss was submerged, elephants had churned the island edge to porridge. Go late March, not April, or skip moss and go June for game. Second mistake: I didn't pre-book the campsite — gate ranger turned me back to Maun, 3.5 hrs lost. Third: I walked off the mokoro path alone on the island — guide whistled me back, a breeding herd of buffalo was 40 m off in the mopane, invisible. Never walk islands unguided. Buy in Maun: a 25 BWP vetkoek + 15 BWP coke at the Shoprite garage, not the 220 BWP lodge breakfast. Gear: a 600 BWP pair of gumboots from the Maun outdoor shop—Okavango clay is a suction trap. Local rule: out of vehicle only at designated campsites and with a guide on islands, no drones (DWNP confiscates), no collecting mopane pods, sign in/out at every gate. The moss in the clay pan is elephant-footprint water—don't step in it, and don't rinse your bottle there. Opinion: Moremi sells the leopard-on-a-leadwood shot; the mossy mopane island is a 3-week window most safari clients never see because they come in July. Should DWNP run a 600 BWP guided "mopane island moss walk" late Feb–Mar and cap it at 6 people, or keep islands guide-only by default? I'd run it. Would you 4×4 3.5 hrs on sand and pay 270 BWP/day just to stand on mossy mopane clay for 90 minutes before it bakes?

I visited Cape Town, traveled by truck, and explored Tanzania and Zanzibar. Everything was fantastic and ran smoothly, from transfers in South Africa to the safaris in Botswana, Zambia, and Tanzania. The coordinators (Diego and Gonzalo), drivers, cooks, and the entire team were excellent with the group. This is an experience I would 100% recommend, especially traveling through Africa by truck to remote locations. The social activities in Malawi come highly recommended as well.

I just returned from a trip organized by Marco Vasco to Botswana: Victoria Falls, Chobe, Kwai, and Deception Valley. The organization was flawless, the lodges had very welcoming staff and excellent food, but the highlight was certainly the exceptional safaris—whether by jeep, mokoro, or boat. The guides were outstanding, and the sheer number of animals you can observe is phenomenal. You can admire them up close, stress-free, and take stunning photos. I’m still starry-eyed from the experience.
