Female College Students' Budget Trip to Brussels|3 Days 2 Nights of Tough but Happy Winter Travel, Including Pitfall Avoidance and Survival Tips
At the end of January, two "broke" female college roommates bravely explored winter Brussels with a hardcore budget of 3000 RMB per person (including airfare). It was truly cold, and we really saved money! But the lingering warmth of the Christmas market, free museum days, warm waffles, and restaurants averaging 10 euros per person made this trip full of unique joys~

Daily Itinerary Breakdown
Day 1: Old Town Walk + Remaining Romance of the Christmas Market
10 AM: Grand Place (Grote Markt, 1000 Brussels)
Take the metro to De Brouckère station, then walk 8 minutes to arrive. The square is less crowded in winter, and the Gothic architecture with a light dusting of snow is perfect for photos! We unexpectedly encountered an elderly street musician playing the accordion, which added to the atmosphere.
⚠️ Tip: The ground may be icy, wear non-slip shoes! Nearby is the Swan Café (where Marx wrote the Communist Manifesto), which is free to visit.
2 PM: Manneken Pis (Rue de l'Etuve 41, 1000 Brussels)
A 5-minute walk from the square. The statue is smaller than expected, but the entire street nearby is lined with chocolate shops where you can sample to your heart’s content (the essence of budget travel). Recommended are Mary and Neuhaus, which offer good quality and the option to buy 1-2 pieces loose to satisfy cravings.
6 PM: Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert (1000 Brussels)
The glass arcade is brightly lit and a great place to warm up! Don’t miss Comics Café (about 8 euros per person) to enjoy Belgian beer and see replicas of Tintin adventure originals.

Day 2: Free Art Day + Local Market Treasure Hunt
10 AM: Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (Rue de la Régence 3, 1000 Brussels)
⚠️ Free after 1 PM on the first Wednesday of every month! We caught the free time slot and headed straight to see the original "The Death of Marat." Regular tickets are 15 euros, students 10 euros.
3 PM: Jeu de Balle Market (Place du Jeu de Balle, 1000 Brussels)
Take the tram to Porte de Hal station, then walk 3 minutes. This is a local flea market where vintage jewelry costs 3-5 euros, and you can bargain boldly! We scored a pair of 90s earrings for just 2 euros.
Evening: Christmas Market (Place Sainte-Catherine)
Some stalls were still open at the end of January! Mulled wine is 3 euros a cup, warming your hands and heart. Nearby Fritland fries shop (about 4 euros per person) with mayonnaise is a must-try—thick fries crispy outside and soft inside, absolutely delicious!

Food Highlights and Warnings
✅ Must-Try List
1. Waffles: Recommended Maison Dandoy (Rue au Beurre 31), classic waffle 3.5 euros, add strawberry jam for 1 euro. Avoid the "1 euro waffles" near tourist spots—they are overly sweet and hard!
2. Mussel Set: Chez Léon (Rue des Bouchers 18) lunch set for 15 euros includes mussels + fries + beer; one portion is enough for two girls.
3. Chocolate: Pierre Marcolini (Grand Place 39) sells loose chocolates at 0.8 euros each; buy 5 and get a beautiful gift bag, perfect for presents.

Winter Survival Guide
🚌 Transport: Take the train from the airport to the city center (8.9 euros), saving 30 euros compared to a taxi! Buy a 10-ride metro ticket (16 euros) for two people to share.
🏠 Accommodation: MEININGER Hotel Bruxelles City Center (hostel double room, about 400 RMB per person for two nights), close to the metro station, with a kitchen to cook instant noodles.
❌ Pitfalls to Avoid: Don’t enter restaurants around Grand Place that list prices as "market price"! Always ask for the "Menu price"; beware of people in mascot costumes forcing photos and then charging 10 euros.
🧳 Bring: Waterproof boots, gloves, scarf (the wind is biting), thermos (free hot water refill), and small denomination cash (many shops don’t accept bills over 50 euros).

Budget Travel Truths
It gets dark in Brussels by 4 PM in winter, so start your itinerary early! The upside is cheaper hotels and flights, and no lines at museums. Our total cost for two people over three days including souvenirs was 2950 RMB, every penny spent wisely—after all, every cent for broke students is saved by eating bread!
