I stumbled upon an incredible hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka. A luxurious experience spending time listening to the sound of the waves while overlooking the Indian Ocean painted by the setting sun. Relaxing in a bathtub while looking out at the sea—a rare feature for rooms in Sri Lanka... The property is surprisingly immaculate, the staff's service is phenomenal, and it offers the unique reliability of a Japanese brand. But what surprised me most of all was the price. For this level of quality, it is unbelievably in the 10,000 yen range. (It can even drop below 10,000 yen during the low season!) I've traveled all over the world, but considering the quality, location, and service, you rarely find a hotel with such great value for money. Even though it's located right in the heart of Colombo, you can experience an extraordinary, resort-like getaway. "I had no idea Sri Lanka had such a stunning hotel." I couldn't help but think that, and it quickly became my absolute favorite stay of this trip. The lobby lounge and cafe also have a spacious, open-air feel. Just lounging there and taking in the ocean view feels incredibly luxurious. It's amazing that you can stay at such a reasonable price, typical of Sri Lanka, while enjoying all these fantastic facilities and services. If anyone asks me, "Where should I stay in Colombo?" I wouldn't hesitate for a second to recommend Granbell Hotel Colombo.

Sri Lanka gives you so much in one trip — beaches, trains, tea fields, wildlife, hiking, seafood and those chaotic little travel moments that become your favourite memories 😄 This is Part 1 of my 15-day Sri Lanka itinerary, covering Colombo, Galle, Hiriketiya, Ella, the famous scenic train and a hike through tea country. Day 1: Colombo → Galle Land in Colombo, grab a tuktuk and head straight to Colombo Fort Railway Station. Quick tip: Ask your driver to pass Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque on the way — it’s one of Colombo’s most eye-catching buildings and perfect for quick photos 📸 Then skip the taxi and take the coastal train to Galle instead. It’s only about two hours, but you’ll get sea views, local life and a much better first taste of Sri Lanka. Arrive in Galle, check in, and spend the evening wandering the beautiful streets of Galle Fort. Day 2: Galle → Jungle Beach → Hiriketiya Start with a tuktuk to the Japanese Peace Pagoda, then head down to Jungle Beach for a refreshing swim. After that, go to Galle Central Bus Stand and catch a bus towards Hiriketiya. You’ll probably need to change buses, but don’t panic — just tell the driver where you’re going and they’ll point you in the right direction. Then settle in for three dreamy nights in Hiriketiya 🏝️ Think: surfing, beach cafés, seafood, scooter rides and slow mornings. Days 3–4: Hiriketiya Beach Days This is your time to relax properly. Surf, swim, rent a scooter, explore nearby beaches and eat as much fresh seafood as possible 🐟 Food tip: Along the coast, always ask what was caught that morning. Some of the best meals are the simplest ones! And yes — pack extra sunscreen. You’ll need it 😅 Day 5: Hiriketiya → Yala Route → Ella Take an early shuttle towards Ella via Yala National Park. This travel day comes with a bonus: you might spot elephants, sloth bears or even a leopard along the way! 🤞 Arrive in Ella and settle into the mountains for two nights. Tip: If you use a good private driver, save their number. Trust me — it can come in very handy later. Day 6: Ella Magic Ella is all about fresh air, mountain views and slow adventure. Visit a tea plantation, chase waterfalls, take a Sri Lankan cooking class, or hike Little Adam’s Peak. Important tip: Once you arrive in Ella, head to the train station and book your ticket for the scenic train towards Nuwara Eliya or Kandy 🚂 This is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic journeys! Day 7: Ella → Tea Country Catch the morning train from Ella, usually around 10:00. This route is famous for a reason — tea plantations, misty hills, bridges, villages and endless green views. If you enjoy hiking, get off near Nuwara Eliya and arrange a taxi to Norwood for a night in tea country. Stay tip: Traveller’s Villa is a great option if you’re planning to hike Stage 8 of the Pekoe Trail. The owner is an avid hiker and can help with drop-off and pick-up. Day 8: Pekoe Trail → Kitulgala → Kandy Start early and hike Stage 8 of the Pekoe Trail before the midday heat kicks in. The hike takes around 4–6 hours depending on your pace, and it’s a great way to see Sri Lanka beyond the usual tourist stops. Afterwards, head towards Kandy. Feeling adventurous? Add a whitewater rafting stop in Kitulgala on the way! It only takes about 1.5 hours and turns a transfer day into a proper adventure day 🌊 You’ll arrive in Kandy tired, but very happy! The moment I landed, the humid sea breeze mixed with floral scents hit me, instantly switching me into vacation mode. Day 2: Sigiriya. In the afternoon, I went on a jeep safari in Minneriya National Park.
