In February 2025, I visited Busuanga as part of a two-week trip around the Philippines. I flew in from Cebu, from Lapu-Lapu. The airport is very simple: a small building with minimal navigation, typical for a provincial terminal. When I got outside, I found out that the tourist bus had already left. I didn’t want to wait for the next one, so I took a private van for about 2000 pesos. Most travelers go directly to Coron town, but I decided not to stay there. Instead, I stayed in Busuanga municipality (not the island, but the local town area). I found my hotel by chance — Josefina’s Tourist Inn. At first, I planned to stay in Coron, but after seeing how crowded it is, I chose a quieter place. I stayed there for seven nights and did not regret it. The hotel was clean and comfortable, with no issues. One thing that really stood out was the food — a good variety of dishes and very reasonable prices. Overall, the value for money was very solid. Busuanga itself is not a resort town, but more of a small provincial area. It’s calm, without crowds or constant tourist activity. At the same time, it’s not isolated — you still have everything basic you need, just without heavy infrastructure. An important point is the prices. They are significantly lower than in Coron town. This applies to accommodation, food, and daily expenses. The difference is noticeable. At the same time, you won’t find the same variety of places as in Coron. There are no chains like McDonald’s, and most shopping is done in small local sari-sari stores. But this actually adds to the overall experience. To move around the island, I rented a motorbike. Without it, you are very limited in mobility. With a bike, it’s easy to plan your own routes and explore freely. I went to Coron town several times, because all island hopping tours start from there. Coron is very different — more crowded, more expensive, and generally more hectic. In my opinion, the price-to-quality ratio there is not always justified, but there are no real alternatives for tours. One of the tours cost around 1600 pesos. It included lagoons, swimming stops, and very clear water. The water is warm and really transparent. You can also rent a transparent kayak if you want. I also visited Calauit Island, where Calauit Island National Park is located. Getting there was not easy — I had to arrange a boat and coordinate the return. But the experience was worth it. Lunch can be freshly prepared on the boat every day. Have fun but also eat well 😋. · Route A 1️⃣ Kayangan Lake, usually the first stop. Start by going to the mountain viewpoint. Although I think the view is average, you still have to queue to take photos at the viewpoint. Then you can swim in the lake, which is home to a type of needlefish (see photo 4 above). Photo 3 shows the lagoon outside Kayangan Lake. · 2️⃣ Barracuda Lake (photo 5) is also a brackish water lake suitable for swimming. It is inhabited by a type of black catfish. The guide will break shells to attract them to feed. Photo 6 shows a nearby private small beach. · 3️⃣ Twin Lagoons (photos 1 and 3) are the highlight of this route. The two lagoons are connected by a narrow channel where you must lie down in the kayak to pass through. There is a reef rock at the connection point where you can stand and get a perfect photo ✅. · 4️⃣ Smith Beach (photo 7) is the lunch stop on this route. The small beach is also very beautiful, and aerial shots can capture the nearby heart-shaped lagoon (photo 8). · 5️⃣ Shipwreck Frame and Coral Garden are two snorkeling spots on this route. The shipwreck frame mostly shows only the bow, but the fish schools here are truly dense (photo 9 below). · Route C 1️⃣ Luzon Shipwreck (photos 9 above and 10) is the shallowest shipwreck in Coron. At low tide, the hull even emerges above the water surface, making snorkeling easy. The ship is home to a large school of small fish, densely packed. · 2️⃣ Regie Cruz Shipwreck (photos 11 and 12) is another relatively shallow shipwreck, with the bow about three to four meters deep, also suitable for snorkeling. · 3️⃣ Pass Island (photo 13) is the lunch stop on this route. You can take a light hike (a small hill that takes about ten minutes to walk). Most amazingly, the hot and cold waters meet here, and you can clearly feel the temperature change while swimming! The lagoons are surrounded by cliffs, and the calm, turquoise waters resemble a natural swimming pool. You can rent a transparent kayak and paddle in—it's a stunning photo opportunity. The seawater is layered in mint jelly colors, and when hopping islands on a crab boat, it feels like sailing on liquid gems. Kayangan Lake is a must-visit "Mirror Lake," requiring a climb over limestone cliffs to see that heart-piercing blue pool. The Underground River Park stretches 8 kilometers, where you can canoe through ancient caves, with stalactites hanging like an upside-down starry sky under the lights. Palawan Island Hopping Guide There are three classic island hopping routes here: 1. Coron Route: Focused on shipwreck diving and coral gardens 2. El Nido Route: Crossing large and small lagoons and secret beaches 3. Underground River Route: Exploring the World Natural Heritage cave wonders It is recommended to wear quick-dry swimwear and anti-slip creek shoes, as most spots require wading ashore. My first trip of the new year took me to island hopping in Palawan🏝️. Here, the large and small limestone islands have formed magnificent karst landscapes through erosion, like a water-based version of Guilin on the sea. If Guilin's scenery is the best in the world, I think El Nido's scenery can be the best in the Philippines! · El Nido island hopping has four routes: A, B, C, and D. Due to time constraints, I only took Route A this time, which focuses on lagoons and beaches~ · 🗺️ Island hopping route: Big Lagoon (kayaking) -> Secret Lagoon -> Shimizu Island -> Payong-Payong Beach -> Entalula Beach -> Las Cabañas Beach · 1️⃣ Big Lagoon (Photo 5) This is the first and main activity of the day. For 300 PHP, you can rent a kayak to paddle through the shallow waters and enjoy the lagoon, even passing through channels between rocks. · 2️⃣ Secret Lagoon (Photos 6, 7) A small lagoon next to the beach that requires crawling through a hole to enter. The water is just over a meter deep. Personally, I found the scenery average, just a quick check-in spot. · 3️⃣ Shimizu Island (Photos 3, 4) The front of Shimizu Island features a series of small beaches divided by sea-eroded rocks, while the back offers snorkeling to see coral. Usually, people have packed lunch on the island here. · 4️⃣ Payong-Payong Beach (Photos 1, 8) This beach is also divided into small sections by sea-eroded rocks. Between two rock formations at the southernmost part, I captured the cover photo that looks like walking into a hidden fairyland from the sea. · 5️⃣ Entalula Beach (Photo 2) The last stop on Route A is usually Seven Commandos Beach, but the captain suggested switching to this beach from Route B that day. I personally think this beach is more beautiful. At the northernmost part, a sea-eroded rock stands like a diamond on a small beach, like a hidden secret realm. · 6️⃣ Las Cabañas Beach (Photo 9) Since I stayed near this beach, on the way back the captain dropped us off here directly. The beach’s tip faces west, so many people come here to watch the sunset. From a drone perspective, you can see the beach filled with people! · Besides El Nido, I also went on two island hopping routes in Coron this time. El Nido’s karst landscape is more beautiful but also more expensive. In Coron, besides visiting lagoons and beaches, you can snorkel to see shipwrecks. Lunch is freshly prepared on the boat with ingredients bought from the market that morning. Comparing the two, I still prefer Coron Island a bit more. Coron is another gem of the Philippines, with its lakes, lagoons, and beaches. 📍How to get there and where to stay Tourists mostly stay on Busuanga Island, in the town of Coron and its surrounding area. The island has an airport, hotels, and all the necessary infrastructure. This means it's a great starting point for boats and excursions to Coron and other picturesque islands. Busuanga Island has almost no swimmable beaches, but the beaches on the uninhabited islands you'll visit are simply heavenly, with unforgettable water colors and soft white sand. I stayed at the Coron Westown Resort. It's located a bit outside the city center, but only a 20-minute drive away. The hotel is nice and spacious, with three outdoor pools and a beautiful interior, although a bit dated. It's perfect for relaxing between excursions. I took two boat excursions at the hotel, and on the third day I just chilled by the pool and got a massage. ⏱️The excursions start early in the morning and end around 5:00 PM. In the morning, you'll be picked up from the hotel by a transfer to the pier, where there's a waiting area. 💸Tour prices range from 1800-1900 pesos (2400-2550 rubles). As is almost always the case, lunch is included in the price. It's served on the boat or beach. Typically, it includes rice, vegetables, chicken, fish, shrimp, and fruit. Water is also provided free of charge everywhere, and beer and soft drinks can be purchased on the boat or on the beaches. Snorkeling equipment rental and kayaking are available separately. 🏝️Coron Island Super Ultimate Tour The most popular boat tour. It includes places like Kayangan Lake, Barracuda Lake, Twin Lagoons, Beach 911, Balinsasayaw Reef, Twin Peaks Coral Garden, and CYC Beach. I was most impressed by Barracuda Lake, surrounded by cliffs. It has almost no flora or fauna, so you feel like you're floating in space or over the abyss. An indescribable experience. 🏖️Also, be sure to take the Island Escapade Tour to see the most beautiful uninhabited islands: Malcapuya Island, Ditaytayan Island, and Bulog Dos Island. These were the best beaches and the color of the water. The best part was when the guides treated us to desserts on the way back. The first time, it was rice flour cakes, absolutely delicious. Another time, it was turon—fried bananas in a thin crust, sprinkled with sugar. 🦭Also, while on Busuanga Island, you can swim with dugongs, marine mammals. The hotel offers comprehensive facilities, including four swimming pools (indoor, outdoor, and a children's pool) with a poolside bar, making it suitable for families and leisure travelers. The restaurant has a good reputation for its dishes, which are generously portioned. There is also a bar and convenience store to meet daily needs.
