The Matsuyama Airport shuttle bus is about a 2-minute walk across the street, making it very convenient. The reception on the 2nd floor offers complimentary toiletries. From 7-9 PM, there's a complimentary mandarin orange soft serve and a beverage buffet. The breakfast buffet, which runs from 6-9 AM, is also available here and is highly recommended for an extra charge. There are five types of all-you-can-drink mandarin orange juice 🍹. The most satisfying tourist attraction of my trip to Matsuyama was by far Matsuyama Castle. If you enjoy visiting Japanese castles, this is a must-visit spot. It is a place that will remain in my memory for a long time, as I was able to enjoy not only the atmosphere of the castle itself but also the panoramic view overlooking downtown Matsuyama. Since Matsuyama Castle is situated on a mountain, you can hike up from the start, but for travelers, using the Matsuyama Castle Ropeway or the lift was the most convenient option. The entrance to the ropeway boarding area was well-maintained, and according to the information board at the time of my visit, the round-trip fare for the ropeway and lift was 520 yen for adults and 260 yen for children. Although the ride was short, it truly captured the feeling of ascending to the castle, setting the mood for the trip right from the start. I took the ropeway up, and the blue vehicle was more charming and cute than I expected. While the ride isn't long, the process of slowly making my way up from the city center toward the castle walls felt like an integral part of the Matsuyama Castle trip. Since it saves walking time, I would recommend it to travelers on hot days or those with short itineraries. Even after getting off the ropeway, the keep wasn't right there; we had to walk a little further up to reach the castle. The information board indicated it would take about 10 minutes to walk to the keep, but in reality, it felt less strenuous as we slowly made our way up through the forest and along the castle walls. With many trees lining both sides of the path and old stone walls and information boards scattered along the way, it felt less like simply walking uphill and more like learning about the castle's structure step by step as we ascended. What particularly impressed me was the stone walls of Matsuyama Castle. Up close, each stone appears rough and heavy as it is stacked, but looking up, the ramparts felt quite magnificent. While it looks stunning in photos, seeing it in person gave a much stronger impression of a castle built on a mountain for defense. The perspective looking up from below was great for taking pictures, and it perfectly captured the unique atmosphere of a Japanese castle. Matsuyama Castle is not just a pretty castle; it holds significant historical value. According to the information boards on-site, there are several buildings designated as Important Cultural Properties, and the gates, watchtowers, and wall structures throughout the castle were well-explained. It felt more substantial because it wasn't just a tourist spot where you simply look at the exterior; you could also examine the castle's structure and defensive functions. The view of Matsuyama city from the top of the castle was truly spectacular. If you follow the observation guide, the city unfolds to the south, and on a clear day, you can enjoy a view where both the mountains and the city are visible. Although there were some clouds on the day I visited, the mountain ridges and cityscapes appeared calm, creating a pleasant atmosphere. Matsuyama felt more like a relaxed provincial town than a bustling major city, so the view from above was very relaxing. Around the castle, there were signs directing you to the Ninomaru Historic Garden, as well as a viewpoint marked as the "Lovers' Sanctuary," making it a great course for a stroll. I felt that exploring the surrounding walking paths and viewpoints along with the main keep would have been much more satisfying than just visiting the keep and coming back down. The charm of Matsuyama Castle was that it allows you to fully experience the atmosphere of a mountain castle despite its easy accessibility. Although it is located close to the city center, a completely different atmosphere unfolds just by taking the ropeway up a short distance. The flow from the old stone walls and forest paths to the castle gates, watchtowers, the main keep, and the viewpoint was so natural that it made for a highly complete travel itinerary. If you are visiting Matsuyama for the first time, I believe this is a must-include in your schedule. Along with Dogo Onsen, it is one of Matsuyama's representative tourist attractions, and the route is well-designed so you can enjoy the castle and the view during the day and then head to the hot springs or famous restaurants in the city center in the evening. Especially for travelers who love Japanese castles, Matsuyama Castle exceeded expectations. Personally, the best route was to start at the ropeway station, walk up along the castle walls, take in the view around the main keep, and then descend slowly. It is a place you will regret rushing through, so I recommend allocating at least 1 hour and 30 minutes for your visit. If you plan to take plenty of photos and explore the interior thoroughly, allocating about 2 hours would be a good idea. If you want to enjoy history, views, a walk, and a ropeway experience all in one trip to Matsuyama, Matsuyama Castle is a destination I highly recommend. Among the castles I visited during my trip to Shikoku, this one had the best atmosphere and was the place that left the most distinct impression of "having arrived in Matsuyama." 📍 Highlights It is a must-visit tourist attraction representing Matsuyama. You can easily ascend using the ropeway and lift. The atmosphere of the old castle walls, watchtowers, and gates is truly wonderful. You can enjoy a panoramic view of downtown Matsuyama. It is a great itinerary to combine with Dogo Onsen and the Okaido Shopping Street. If you enjoy visiting Japanese castles, this is a highly satisfying destination. 📍 Visiting Tips You have to walk a short distance uphill from the ropeway/lift station to the castle. I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. The uphill climb can be hot in the summer, so it is a good idea to bring water. It is recommended to explore not only the main keep but also the castle wall paths and viewpoints. Photos look beautiful from the angle looking up from below the walls and from the direction of the observation deck. If you ever visit Shikoku, particularly Ehime Prefecture, you absolutely cannot miss checking in at "Yokaichi Old Town" in Uchiko! This preserved historical district perfectly captures the ambiance of the Edo and Meiji eras, earning its designation as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in Japan. Convenient Transportation: We kicked off a bright new morning by hopping on the JR Yosan Line - Limited Express from JR Matsuyama Station. In just 27 minutes, we arrived at Uchiko Station! It’s incredibly fast and convenient, making it absolutely perfect for a one-day trip. Energy-Saving Walking Route (Pro Tip!): A major tip I want to share is to start your walking tour from "Kosho-ji Temple." The best part about this route is that it’s downhill the entire way, saving you from breaking a sweat hiking up the hills. It makes for a very relaxing stroll while conserving a ton of energy! Kosho-ji also houses a breathtakingly beautiful and serene reclining Buddha statue—a truly auspicious starting point for the day. Highlights Along the Way: Both sides of the street are lined with houses featuring unique soft yellow or mustard-colored walls. We stopped by the Yokaichi and Gokoku Town Preservation Center to learn about the history of how this town flourished through the production of Japan Wax. After that, we marveled at the grandeur of a wealthy merchant family's estate at the Kamihaga Residence, and snapped some photos in front of the Honhaga Family Residence with its remarkably exquisite architecture. After a bit of tiring walking, we recharged at Naru Cafe, a cozy little spot tucked away in an old building. Slowly sipping coffee and soaking in the old-town vibe was simply the best! Afterward, we explored the local way of life at the Townhouse Museum and visited the historic Moribun Brewery (森文醸造), which greets you with its distinctly fragrant aroma. Final Impressions: Yokaichi Old Town isn't just a picturesque spot for photos; it's a true journey back in time to experience the roots of Japanese culture. Every step taken on the cobblestones and past the historic walls creates a precious memory. If you're ever in Ehime, you absolutely have to experience it for yourself!

JR Shimonada Station in Iyo City, Ehime Prefecture Known as the "closest station to the sea," this scenic spot frequently appears as a filming location for dramas and movies. With the Seto Inland Sea stretching out before you, sitting on a bench makes you feel as if you're floating on the water. The view is especially beautiful at sunset, when the orange sky and sea blend seamlessly, attracting many visitors for photo opportunities. Trains run infrequently, so it's important to check the train schedule in advance. Snapping a photo with the red tourist train, the "Iyonada Monogatari," is also popular. However, priority is given to passengers on this train when taking photos nearby! Be sure to listen carefully to the explanations given by the station volunteers. If you're visiting by car, you can use the free parking lot near the station, but please be aware of narrow roads and follow traffic rules. You might think all citrus tastes the same, but stepping into this shop will change your mind. Here, you can choose three out of five popular citrus juices for just 770 yen. Simply turn on the tap to fill your glass. The differences in color and aroma are immediately noticeable, and once you take a sip, the distinct sharp acidity, gentle sweetness, and lingering aftertaste of each variety become clear. I opted for the shop's recommendations: Natsuumi, the trendy Shiranui, and the intriguingly named Kiyomi. Starting from Songshan Station, it takes about fifty minutes to reach the most beautiful unmanned train station, Xiatan Station. The buses here cannot use transportation cards, so you have to buy tickets on site! After getting off the bus, you can take a few photos near the station (there are a lot of people). Walk along the road on the right and you will see a small rocky beach. I went down the stairs toward the beach and after a short walk you can see the railroad tracks. There are three in total. There are fewer people here than at the station, so you can take more photos. There will be many students sitting together in the car after 3 o'clock. It will be more convenient if you drive yourself. 📍Ehime Prefecture We spent two days and one night touring Ehime Prefecture. We planned to fulfill my niece's request to ride the Anpanman train. However, the hot springs are fun for adults and children alike. Here are the places we visited. ⚫︎Anpanman train The train was filled with Anpanman. The kids were in a good mood and it was a happy memory. ⚫︎Dogo Onsen streetscape A retro station building that retains the atmosphere of the Meiji era. There are many photo spots such as the "Botchan train" and the clock tower. 📸 A must-see spot for eating and buying souvenirs. ⚫︎Enmanji Temple Enmanji Temple is located near the main building of Dogo Onsen. The shortest route connecting Kyushu and Shikoku! Boarding time is 1 hour and 10 minutes. [National Route Kyushu Ferry]🚢 Did you know that you can go directly from Kyushu to Shikoku, and from Shikoku to Kyushu? You can actually cross in a flash✨ It connects Saganoseki, Oita Prefecture, and Misaki, Ehime Prefecture. What's more, even though it's a boat, it's treated as a national highway😊 It's a national highway that is a series of roads, including over the sea⭐️ You can board the boat if there is space available without a reservation, but if you make a reservation online, you can get your ticket by just holding up the QR code! The great thing is that if you purchase a round-trip ticket, you can freely change your return trip after the ticket is issued! If you suddenly want to stop by a tourist spot or go home earlier than planned, just go to the ferry terminal without contacting them and they'll let you on if there's space on the ferry👍 (Reservations are prioritized) The interior of the ship has been renovated and is beautiful✨ In addition to traditional seats where you can lie down, there are also counter seats with a view outside and reclining chairs. I hope this will be helpful when you get lost🙌 [Recommended spots] ・Shimonada Station Shimonada Station has been the location for many movies and dramas. It is also famous as a station where you can see the sunset🌇 You can see the sea right in front of the platform, so it feels open! ・Dogo Onsen Renovations were completed in July 2012, and the entire building was reopened, including the Dogo Onsen Main Building, Asuka no Yusen, and Botchan Karakuri Clock♨️ You can also stroll around the arcade street and pick up souvenirs and a meal! It's nice to start and end your day in a hot spring. ・Uwajima Castle Uwajima City is about 2 hours south of Matsuyama City. It has Uwajima Castle and Tenshaen Gardens. Uwajima Castle, located in the city, sits atop a small hill. It is one of the 12 remaining castle towers. ・Imabari Castle A castle in Imabari City! If you visit the castle tower, you can also visit the turret. The weather was nice, so the Shimanami Kaido was clearly visible from the castle tower. At the turret, we were able to learn how attacks were made from the castle during wars. ・ Clouds Above the Hill Museum The Clouds Above the Hill Museum is based on the novel "Clouds Above the Hill." You can explore the museum while learning about the culture and history of the Taisho period depicted in the novel. If you like modern times, you might be hooked! 【Food】 ・Sushiemon Sushiemon is a conveyor belt sushi restaurant with its main store in Uwajima. There is also a store in Matsuyama city, but we went to the main store in Uwajima! It was refreshing to be able to eat nigiri sushi made from fresh fish caught at the fishing port 🐟✨ ・Original Uwajima Taimeshi "Marumizu" If you search for taimeshi, you will definitely find "Marumizu". It is written as "Marumizu" and pronounced as "gansui". I heard that there is a restaurant near the ropeway to Matsuyama Castle, so I had it for dinner on my last day in Ehime! Shimanami Kaido is located in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture. Seven or so islands are connected between Imabari and Hiroshima Prefecture via large bridges, and cycling is recommended! The spots with the large bridges on the prefectural borders are particularly impressive! There is a lodging near Omishima Island in the middle, and since it would be tough to cycle the whole way in one day, we stayed there. The Sadamisaki Peninsula in Ikata-cho, Ehime Prefecture, is one of my favorite view spots. The beautiful sea, the mountains visible on the opposite shore, and the windmills on top of them. It's a special view that can only be seen here. The breakwater that the high school students were in the middle of drawing was also a cool design. "Oriko no Sato" in Ikata-cho, Ehime Prefecture, is a traditional culture experience facility that uses a building that was once an elementary school. Ehime Prefecture Dogo Onsen has a history of 3,000 years and is one of the three ancient springs in Japan, attending rheumatism.

Stepping into the Niyodo River for the first time, I was truly struck by the quiet beauty of its blue waters 😍. The river wasn't a flamboyant blue, but rather a transparent, clear color, as if the sky had been blended into the water, instantly calming the mind. 🏞️ Why Kochi? Kochi has always been one of my favorite places in Japan because it lacks the hustle and bustle of big cities, instead offering a comfortable, slow pace. Starting from Hong Kong, you can fly to an airport near Shikoku first, then connect to the Kochi area. The overall trip isn't too complicated, making it suitable for those who want to explore Japan beyond its islands. ✈️💙 📜 The Significance of the Niyodo River The Niyodo River flows through Kochi and Ehime, and is one of Japan's rivers with exceptionally high water quality. 💦 Its most remarkable feature isn't just its clarity, but also the ever-changing blue hue that shifts with the weather, light, and angle of view—each view is different. However, I've also heard that some areas along the Niyodo River are experiencing a continuous population decline. On a whim, I decided to take a one-night, whirlwind trip to Ehime Prefecture. Come to think of it, I've never really explored Matsuyama city properly. Upon arriving in Matsuyama, my first stop was "Inoue-ya" for lunch! Inoue-ya I was greeted by Ehime's mascot, "Mikyan," at Matsuyama Airport. Passing a tap dispensing mandarin orange juice, I took a bus and a streetcar to arrive at "Inoue-ya." This restaurant is said to be the first to bring Imabari's famous "Yakibuta Tamago Meshi" (roasted pork and egg rice) to Matsuyama. I had decided to have lunch here this time because I wasn't able to eat Yakibuta Tamago Meshi when I passed through Imabari during my previous trip around Japan. Inside the restaurant The interior had the atmosphere of a traditional, old-fashioned diner, full of everyday life. There were tables behind the counter, and a tatami room in the back left. Yakibuta Tamago Meshi This is the "large serving (600 yen)" of "Yakibuta Tamago Meshi." The large portion comes with 400g of rice and three fried eggs, while the regular portion has 200g of rice and two fried eggs. There was also an extra-large portion available. It's a simple dish – just roasted pork with a sweet, rich sauce topped with fried eggs – but it's something you might get hooked on. It's the kind of flavor that high school boys would love (lol). It seems like everyone orders the regular size portion or the set with fried chicken or dumplings, so it's quite a high-calorie bowl. Even so, it's surprisingly affordable at around 800 yen. It tasted as I imagined, but I was satisfied to finally eat the roast pork and egg rice bowl I'd been wanting to try. There are still so many local specialties I haven't tried all across Japan. A wine shop I frequent in Tokyo highly recommended a place in Matsuyama, so I decided to check it out. Known for its expertise in natural wines, this bar offers a fascinating selection of rare bottles you won't typically find elsewhere. sanzé Located just steps away from Kami-Ichiman Station on the Iyotetsu tram line in Matsuyama, the wine bar "sanzé" moved to this spot in May 2023 from a location slightly closer to Matsuyama Castle. Just a heads-up: the surrounding area gets quite dark at night, making the bar a bit tricky to spot if you're just walking along the sidewalk. The Counter The interior is incredibly chic, featuring tastefully chosen furniture and lighting. The ambiance is lovely, though the dim lighting did make taking photos a bit of a challenge (lol). yawn 2023 I started with "yawn 2023" from Natan Winery, located in neighboring Tokushima Prefecture here in Shikoku. Made from Tokushima-grown Neo Muscat grapes, this natural wine boasts a grapefruit-like fruitiness and acidity, finishing with a subtle, pleasant bitterness. This is exactly my kind of wine. Ebola Syndrome For her first glass, my wife chose "Ebola Syndrome 2020" by La Sorga from Southern France. Naming a wine after the Ebola virus is certainly a bold choice... It has a dry, spicy flavor profile. The berry-like aftertaste is quite refreshing. Chilled Ratatouille and Couscous "Chilled Ratatouille and Couscous" (550 yen). It was beautifully plated and, of course, tasted amazing. Fistful of Flowers 2022 My next glass was another white: "FISTFUL OF FLOWERS 2022" from Australia's MOMENTO MORI WINES. True to its name, it has a wonderfully floral and fresh aroma. It's incredibly drinkable, offering a juicy sweetness reminiscent of peaches and lychees. Bourgogne Blanc Cuvée My wife's second white was "Bourgogne Blanc Tradition Marc Soyard" from Domaine de Cras in Burgundy, France. This 100% Chardonnay is firmly dry with a deeply savory character. Pacific Saury and Eggplant Terrine "Pacific Saury and Eggplant Terrine" (1,100 yen). The savory umami of the saury and the melt-in-your-mouth sweetness of the eggplant are a perfect match. The tartness of the balsamic vinegar is a great touch, too. It comes with a side of crispy fried eggplant skins, which add a delicious, savory crunch. Shrimp and Sun-Dried Tomato Stick Fritters "Shrimp and Sun-Dried Tomato Stick Fritters" (750 yen). Perfectly crispy on the outside and plump on the inside. Sun-dried tomatoes are just so good, aren't they? Ojisan Rosé We finished with a rosé from New Zealand simply named "Ojisan" (Uncle). Why that name!? Despite its quirky title, the wine itself was delightfully mellow and easy to drink. Pâté de Campagne The "Pâté de Campagne" (700 yen) was a truly satisfying dish—moist and packed with rich, meaty flavors. It paired beautifully with the rosé we drank at the end. The bar boasts an incredibly stylish and inviting atmosphere, and the food is phenomenal. Despite all this, the prices are surprisingly affordable—maybe that's just the standard in Matsuyama... With its focus on natural wines, the lineup is full of unique, hard-to-find bottles, making every glass an adventure.
